Multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm Warren and Mahoney has established a permanent base in Australia with the opening of a Sydney studio and the appointments of two senior designers.
In 2011 the firm won a significant strategy and design project for National Australia Bank, and is now involved in delivering projects for the bank across Australia.
Managing Director Peter Marshall says the specialist area of customer experience strategy and retail transformation will continue to be a focus for Warren and Mahoney in Australia.
"Weve developed international best-practice design thinking in the customer experience space. This has been further demonstrated recently with the winning of a design partnership commission with Tradelink, a major Australia-wide building materials brand, and another significant commission in Sydney," says Marshall.
Marshall says the new studio has been several years in the planning, and will help the firm better serve institutional clients on both sides of the Tasman.
"Setting up a base in Australia is a natural evolution for Warren and Mahoney, and its something weve been working towards for some time. Over the past two years in particular we have completed a number of successful projects there, and developed a sound understanding of the market.
"We are increasingly working with large trans-Tasman institutional clients - banks for example - and engaging with Australian design collaborators for major New Zealand-based projects. The Sydney studio gives us a permanent on-the-ground presence and enables us to react more quickly to our clients needs."
New recruits Chris Adams and Bianca Pohio - New Zealanders by birth - bring extensive knowledge of the Australian market and best-practice experience to Warren and Mahoneys Australia team, which is led by retail design Principal Gareth Huston and Director John Coop.
Adams and Pohio previously owned their own architecture and interiors practice in Sydney, Pohio Adams Architects, having previously spent time working in architecture studios in New York, Australia, and New Zealand. Their work spans a number of disciplines ranging from residential development, private residences, high-end commercial fit outs, retail work and furniture design for clients in Australia and New Zealand.
Pohio Adams Architects won several New Zealand Institute of Architects awards for retail fit out projects delivered for fashion brands Kate Sylvester and Workshop, and received recognition at Australias Ideas Awards for private residences in Sydneys Balmain and Darling Point.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Four teams of architects presented plans Wednesday for a reimagined Penn Station that would be a spacious, welcoming gateway to New York City instead of the crowded, confusing and dark transportation hub now used by hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.
The four firms that took part in a design challenge sponsored by The Municipal Art Society all said the only way to improve Penn Station would be to move Madison Square Garden from its current home atop the train station.
John Fantillas of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture said the arena crowds the station "like three fat men in a rowboat."
Roger Duffy of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill called Penn Station "a disaster" and said his firm has imagined "a magnificent future" for the area with Madison Square Garden moved just to the southwest of its current location.
Madison Square Garden called the plans "pie-in-the-sky drawings."
"It's curious to see that there are so many ideas on how to tear down a privately owned building that is a thriving New York icon, supports thousands of jobs and is currently completing a $1 billion transformation," the company said in a statement.
The design challenge was prompted by an upcoming vote by New York's City Council on renewing Madison Square Garden's permit to operate on top of Penn Station.
Madison Square Garden wants the permit renewed in perpetuity, while the city Planning Commission is recommending a 15-year limit. The Municipal Art Society and some other civic groups want the permit renewed for 10 years.
In addition to H3 Hardy and Skidmore, Owings & Merriill, architects of the under-construction 1 World Trade Center, the firms that presented new Penn Station designs were Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which has worked on the High Line and renovating Lincoln Center, and SHoP Architects, one of the firms that designed the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn.
They offered plans for an airy, light-filled Penn Station with shops, rooftop gardens and other amenities.
