Daniels Public Lecture: Anton Garca-Abril
The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design welcomed Architect Anton Garca-Abril on October 23, 2012 for the inaugural Kohn Shnier Architects Lecture. Garca-Abril is founder of the acclaimed firm ENSAMBLE STUDIO, and a recently appointed Professor of Architecture at the MIT School of Architecture + Planning. Known for its groundbreaking projects such as the Hemeroscopium House in Madrid and the SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela, ENSAMBLE STUDIO #39;s work is conceptually and structurally experimental. Garca-Abril received the Architectural Record Design Vanguard Prize in 2005. In 2009, he was awarded the Rice Design Alliance Prize, which is given to exceptionally gifted architects in the early phase of their professional career. ENSAMBLE STUDIO #39;s approach to design has also been recognized by influential peers: in 2010, it was selected by SANAA to participate in the Venice Biennale of Architecture. The goal of the Kohn Shnier Architects Lecture is to feature early-to-mid-career architects who have made significant contributions to the combined professional, educational, experimental, and community-based arenas in which they practice. MEANING: In this video, the authors want to appeal to people, architects and authorities to consider disabled persons in the design of schools, hospitals and toilets. BACKGROUND: The video is an output of trainees. It was filmed using a small digital photo camera, tripod provided to each participant. Apologies for some sound disturbances as the sound is made using only the internal microphone. This video was made by three disabled youth that participated in a two week training on Painting, Photography and Video Production organised by the NGO Action IEC in Bantey Meanchey Province, Cambodia. During this time, the trainees produced 18 paintings, 7 slideshows and 4 short video clips. This activity was made as part of the Disability and the Arts Fund of the Australian Red Cross, funded by AusAid.
