The list of prospective architects for the proposed new Galesburg Public Library building has been reduced from nine to four, after the librarys Board of Trustees voted on Thursday to keep four not five architects in the running for the $15 million to $20 million library project.

Earlier in October, board members received nine applications from interested architects, a number that fell short of board member Mike Krolls guess that 20 firms would send in their qualifications. Still, the board was pleased with the firms that applied some of which worked on The Art Institute of Chicagos Modern Wing and the Nobel Peace Center in Norway and found it difficult to pare down the list.

So difficult was the task that a motion was made to carry five firms to the next round in the hiring process, which will include site visits to libraries and interviews with the firm. But board members said scheduling five site visits before December would be difficult. That left Cordogan Clark & Associates out of the next round, which the board gave a score of 47, 15 points separated from the fourth place finisher.

The four firms that were selected include: FEH Associates Inc., Lohan Anderson, OPN and Engberg Anderson.

Lohan Anderson has done work on Chicago Public Library branch system, as well as the Des Plaines library that was part of the towns downtown redevelopment. OPN completed a sleek, $25 million library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

There wasnt one that didnt meet or exceed our written expectations, Kroll said. It really did take a lot of thought and judgment to whittle them down.

Some of the firms were not selected because much of their portfolios dealt in ultra modern works, which board members and Galesburg Director of Community Development Roy Parkin said would probably not fit in downtown Galesburg. The site of the new library is on Main and Academy Streets, next to the newly opened Donald L. Moffitt bridge.

The design I would pick would be more traditional, if I were choosing, said Parkin, who sits on the librarys Construction Committee.

Some, however, want a building with more flair, but within reason.

It should be stunning, but there has to be some kind of relation to our area, Mary Phillips said.

The S.ky Blue solar house in Lexington received accolades because, "The rigorous integration of form and technology creates a great learning experience for students, developing ideas they can actually build," judges wrote. It was designed by Gregory Luhan of Luhan Studio in Lexington and the University of Kentucky S.ky Blue solar house team.

The Kentucky Society of Architects on Thursday presented its annual Excellence in Architectural Design awards to building projects across the state including several in Lexington and Central Kentucky.

Five projects were given honor awards, the group's highest distinction, and three were given citations. The honorees were chosen from 39 entries received.

Here are the winners with selected judges' comments:

Jx2 house in Bourbon County: The rural private residence was designed by architects Margaret and Michael Jacobs for use as their own home. "The metal finish and the siting of the project in the landscape meadow makes an enriching connection to other agrarian or farm buildings that beautifully punctuate this region."

S.ky Blue solar house in Lexington: Designed by Gregory Luhan of Luhan Studio in Lexington and the University of Kentucky S.ky Blue solar house team, the structure was built in 2009 for a national competition on solar houses; it placed ninth. The mobile house is now near the Gluck Equine Research Building off Nicholasville Road. It served as a visitors center during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. "The rigorous integration of form and technology creates a great learning experience for students, developing ideas they can actually build."

Meadow View Cemetery pavilion in Louisville: Designed by JRA Architects of Louisville. "We love the detail and material attention paid to this extraordinarily simple structure. ... The butterfly roof does its job as a reference to an uplifting metamorphosis."

Private residence in Louisville: Designed by De Leon and Primmer Architecture Workshop of Louisville. "This is a very mature work simple, modern additions are strategically located, well-proportioned and complement the historic structure beautifully."

Market Street Barbers in Louisville: Designed by Architectural Artisans of Louisville. "The design transcends style debates to create a classic barbershop that we imagine appeals to many men."

Kentucky architecture awards given

SOUTH BEND -- Two South Bend architectural firms have decided to end their friendly competition and merge instead.

James Childs Architects on Lincoln Way East and Architecture Design Group on Wayne Street formed a new firm effective Thursday, called Alliance Architects.

The two companies started talks a little more than a year ago, because they wanted to diversify their project types, increase staff project experience and provide more staff growth and development.

"It seemed very natural, but we didn't want to rush it," said Martin Murphy, a principal at James Childs and now president of Alliance, in a phone interview.

"We were facing an ownership transition at our firm and we looked upon that as an opportunity to recast some things and take it to different level," he said.

The new firm wanted a name that reflected its new direction.

"Our thinking was that it speaks to the collaborative nature of the practice," Murphy said. "Our goal is to align our efforts with the clients' interests and push forward as a team."

The transition will be seamless from a client standpoint, he added. The new firm will consolidate all staff from both companies -- a total of 21 -- and operations at the current James Childs Architects building at 929 Lincoln Way E.

The project teams also will remain intact. The firm has 17 registered and graduate architects, with an average of 20 years of experience.

"Moving forward it's helpful to have more legs at the stool in terms of what projects come available," Murphy said.
