U.S. Architects Explore Design Opportunities in India - November 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Gateway Brigade in Bangalore, India, is a mixed-use development with a business tower, hotel tower, mall, hospital, and large residential tower. The cosmopolitan city of Bangalore is home to much of the IT industry in India.

In mid-October, more than 30 architects flew from points around the U.S. to Chennai, India, where they began a five-day, three-city trade mission organized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The purpose of the mission was to encourage the export of American architectural services to India, whose government plans to invest $1 trillion in infrastructure between now and 2017.

Participating architects visited Chennai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. They met developers and government officials to learn about business opportunities and networked with local architects to discuss potential partnerships. (Indian regulations require that foreign architects partner with local firms.) High-potential sectors include master planning, transportation, and healthcare.

The AIA began organizing the mission with the Commerce Department more than a year ago, says Jessica Salmoiraghi, the AIAs director of federal relations. To help meet President Obamas goal of doubling U.S. exports between 2010 and 2015, the federal agency approached professional associations that might want to export their services in new ways. The Commerce Departments International Trade Administration awarded the AIA a grant of nearly $300,000which the AIA will partly matchto support this mission and two more, to India and Sri Lanka in 2013 and 2014, as well as trainings that will help U.S. architects win jobs in India.

Architects on the trip paid for their own travel and accommodation, plus a fee of nearly $5,000 per firm. Despite the cost, about 50 firms applied, a sign of architects strong interest in India as an emerging market. The Commerce Department ran the selection process and chose representatives from a range of small to large firms. Commerce officials arranged about 300 one-on-one meetings for the five days of the mission, after screening for viable businesspeople who had viable projects, and [local] architects who were serious about partnering, says Mickey Jacob, the AIAs 2013 president and ambassador on the mission.

Participant Jim Jose, of Denvers path21 architecture, agrees that the opportunities were abundantand solid. Theyre shovel-ready projects. These guys have millions of square feet ready to go, says Jose. Joses firm specializes in healthcare, senior living, and master planning. It hasnt worked in India before, but is shifting its focus there from Abu Dhabi, where activity is subsiding, he says. He believes that his firms expertise in healthcare design will serve the Indian market wellon the trip, he learned of hospitals being designed by hospitality architects. As we dug deeper, we realized their access to quality healthcare design and architects is limited.

Jose and his partner Bill Turner returned home with about 120 leads. We have a top 10, and feel three could be contracted in the next three to four months, Jose says, adding, But we dont celebrate until we have a contract.

ASLA Launches New Online Animation: “Designing Neighborhoods for People and Wildlife” - November 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Transforming residential properties into real wildlife habitats is the focus of a new animation launched by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The animationDesigning Neighborhoods for People and Wildlifeshows how native plants and designed structures provide what nature needs.

Wildlife habitat can be destroyed by development, farms, or mines; or degraded by invasive species, climate change, or pollution so it no longer supports native wildlife. The animation shows that habitat loss, and the corresponding loss of biodiversity, doesnt have to continue. Starting with homeowners properties, fragmented habitats can be rewoven together, creating neighborhoods that are not only healthier for wildlife but also for people. Many residential landscape architects are also helping to stem the losses by creating beautiful neighborhoods that provide habitat for many species.

We have all heard that ecosystem function must be restored to urban landscapes if humans and the life around them are to be sustained in the future. Using beautiful 3-D animations, Designing Neighborhoods for People and Wildlife delivers this message in the most powerful and convincing way I have seen, said Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, professor and chair of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware, and an expert advisor on the animation. We can share our yards with the species that support us and Designing Neighborhoods shows us how. May it go viral!

The animation is part of ASLAs Designing Our Future: Sustainable Landscapes site. Made possible by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, the site offers 30 case studies in easily understood terms that demonstrate how landscape architects beautify our world while also protecting and working with nature. It also includes ten animationsdeveloped by ASLA with author and Google SketchUp expert Daniel Tal, ASLAthat show sustainable landscape design in action.

The free site also provides many educational resource guides aimed at K-12 students. Topics include recycling, outdoor recreation, transportation, and more. The guides provide hundreds of vetted games, videos, classroom activities, and curriculum organized by age groups (K-5, 6-8, and 9-12).

About the American Society of Landscape Architects

Founded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing nearly 16,000 members in 49 professional chapters and 76 student chapters. The Society's mission is to lead, to educate and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning and artful design of our cultural and natural environments. Members of the Society use their ASLA suffix after their names to denote membership and their commitment to the highest ethical standards of the profession. Minnesota architects still ‘treading water’ - November 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Attendance is expected to be consistent with previous years, AIA says. (Photo: Joey McLeister)

Modest gains in employment, billings as AIA gathers

As the American Institute of Architects Minnesota chapter prepares for its annual convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota design firms may be feeling a bit more optimistic than they did this time last year.

AIAs leading economic indicator is looking up, employment at architecture firms appears to be getting better, and rental housing is riding high.

Still, theres plenty of room for improvement.

We are still treading water is probably the best analogy, said Jon Buggy, architect and president of AIA-Minnesota, which has 2,200 members. Its kind of plodding along right now.

The slow recovery apparently hasnt diminished interest in the convention. This year, AIA Minnesota expects about 1,500 people to attend the 78th annual convention, which starts Tuesday and runs through Friday at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

AIA says 200 companies will set up exhibits, and presenters at 56 programs will delve into topics such as research tax credits for architects and engineers, sustainable affordable housing, historic rehabilitation, fee negotiations, and architect-led design-build.

Participation is consistent with recent years, according to Mary Larkin, AIA Minnesotas communications director. The number of pre-registered visitors is pretty much dead-on from what it was last year, and the exhibitor space is sold out, Larkin said.

Washington, D.C. development by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects wins Urban Land Institute award - November 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The Avenue, a mixed-use development in Washington, D.C., by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architectshas won a Global Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121105/NE03996 )

Widely recognized as the land use industry's most prestigious awards program, the competition rewards real estate developments for best practices in design, construction, economics, planning and management. Earlier this year, ULI selected 29 finalists from nearly 200 international entries before narrowing the winners to 14. In addition to good design, the award criteria include factors such as contribution to the community, innovations, environmental protection, response to societal needs, and financial success.

Developed by Boston Properties, The Avenue is an urban town center that connects George Washington University to the Foggy Bottom and West End neighborhoods. Adjacent to Washington Circle, the 1.4 million-square-foot development includes a 12-story apartment building and a 10-story LEED Gold-rated office building. Shops, restaurants, and a Whole Foods grocery store create a vibrant shopping street.

The Avenue establishes a landscaped public courtyard with flowering trees at the center of the 2.6-acre site. This garden is made possible by submerging parking and a full-sized loading dock below grade. A water feature with aquatic plantings anchors the courtyard and helps collect rainwater for irrigation.

Along Pennsylvania Avenue, a three-story glass-fronted atrium joins the office building's two towers. A grand two-story lobby connects the two towers of the apartment buildingthe west tower, with a rooftop pool, and the east, which has a rooftop deck. The 335-unit building is set back from the street, creating a lively pedestrian plaza adjacent to sidewalk dining, shops and the Metro station.

Engineering News-Record chose The Avenue for its "Best of the Best" list. The Washington Business Journal named the project "Deal of the Year" for new office and multi-family development.

About Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects Founded in 1977 and led by Cesar Pelli, Fred Clarke, and Rafael Pelli, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has designed some of the world's most recognizable buildings, including the World Financial Center in New York, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, and the International Finance Centre in Hong Kong. The firm has been honored with critical acclaim and hundreds of design awards, including the American Institute of Architects' Firm Award and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Taj Mahal - November 5, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Taj Mahal Red Fort , AGRA
Photos of TAJ MAHAL, which is the great symbol of love also "the Taj" is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world #39;s heritage". Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Ottoman Turkish and Indian architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex of structures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma #39;mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer. Agra Fort (sometimes called the Red Fort), was commissioned by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565, and is another of Agra #39;s World Heritage Sites. A stone tablet at the gate of the Fort states that it had been built before 1000 but was later renovated by Akbar.
