A blood-red sea of ceramic poppies is spilling from the Tower of London to commemorate British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in World War I on the 100th anniversary of its start.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Prince Harry on Tuesday to symbolically "plant" poppies in the dry moat surrounding the Tower to honor the military dead.
The installation, called "Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red," is at the moment made up of 120,000 ceramic poppies, a carpet of crimson. The red tide will widen in the coming months until there are 888,246 poppies -- one for each of the British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in the war.
The poppy has been the traditional symbol of remembrance in Britain since World War I, when a poem from the era recalled the fragile flower melding with the dead in Flanders.
The project is meant to convey an army not as a faceless machine but as individuals, unique and special in their own right.
"I'm literally trying to represent people because a number is a number, but if you see it all like this it is a visual idea of how many people were there," said its creator, Paul Cummins.
Each of the poppies in the moat took three days to make. They will later be sold for 25 pounds ($42) each, and sent to the buyers after Armistice ceremonies in November.
The money will go to British charities such as the Royal Legion and Help for Heroes, which serve British veterans.
Some 8,000 volunteers will be placing the ceramic flowers that are attached to sticks and placed in the ground. One of them was 72-year-old Joan Clayton-Jones, whose great-uncle was killed, as was her husband's grandfather.

San Francisco's transit agency is rolling out the figurative red carpet for Muni lines on Market Street between Fifth and 12th streets beginning tonight through November in an ongoing effort to signal the transit-only lanes to motorists.
The red-carpet treatment that involves bonding red thermoplastic to existing lanes requires a partial closure on the eastbound transit-only lane on Market Street between Fifth and Mason streets from 10:30 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Saturday. Barring special events, parts of the Market Street stretch of the project will be closed between those hours Fridays and Saturdays to minimize traffic impacts through completion.
"These lanes are already legislated as transit-only lanes," said Kristen Holland, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. "But we had found through the pilot [program] that having a clear indication for this space really helps motorists understand that it's special and different."
Red-colored lanes first appeared in the spring as part of a pilot project on Church Street between 16th Street and Duboce Avenue, designed to improve travel time on J-Church trains and 22-Fillmore buses.
The installation has resulted in strong improvements in transit speed, reliability and the Muni passenger experience, according to transit agency officials, who expect the same for the F-Market and Wharves, 6-Parnassus, 9-San Bruno, 9L-San Bruno Limited, 71-Haight-Noriega and 71L-Haight-Noriega Limited lines.
During the $1.8 million work on Market Street, all buses will operate in the curb lane and use Muni stops along the street, while the F-Market and Wharves line will operate through the installation area. Red lanes have been painted in sections of Third and Geary streets and are near completion on O'Farrell Street.
The red lanes on Market Street are designated for only buses and taxis at all times, unlike on some other corridors where signage will indicate restriction times.

HORN LAKE You could call it an Extreme Library Makeover.
Built as a middle school for use by students in grades 6-8, Horn Lake Intermediate School, 6585 Horn Lake Road, now holds students in grades 3-5 and librarian Allison Mauney felt her work area needed to be a little more kid-friendly for reading and learning.
Her efforts to enhance the library space have received a boost from a $5,000 Lowes Toolbox for Education Grant that will help fund the installation of new carpet in the library.
Workers this week started to rip out the old library carpet in preparation for the new carpet to be installed.
Mauney learned of the Lowes grant last year and applied for it in February. She was told in May the money was coming her way for the project.
The grant will pay for the cost of the carpet. We used other funds to pay for the installation and the other work we are having done here, Mauney said. This will get us off in the right direction. We are hoping within a year to have everything the way we want it to have done.
The way Mauney wants it done is to have areas where the youngsters can do their reading on the new carpet or in beanbag chairs, close to the floor and away from the tables; thus making reading more enjoyable for the kids.
When we put it all back together again, were going to be able to rearrange our furniture and adjust and build in reading nooks and places for kids to be able to get down to the floor and enjoy their reading more in this setting, Mauney said.
Horn Lake Intermediate School becomes one of more than 600 schools in the country to earn the grant for school improvements from the home improvement company. Each year, Lowes provides grants of up to $100,000 for a wide range of projects at K-12 schools across the country.
The library project will continue to be a work in progress during the school year, but principal Tammie Skelton believes her students will be hard pressed not to look forward to coming to the library this fall.

The commercial carpet market has a buyer power score of 3.5 out of 5, reflecting market conditions that are currently favorable for buyers. Demand for commercial carpet has increased during the three years to 2014 because of strong growth in nonresidential construction projects, which have been facilitated by growing corporate profit margins during the same period. According to IBISWorld procurement analyst Kiera Outlaw, as commercial space increases, the need for carpeting follows suit. Consequently, commercial carpet prices have been rising in the past three years, displaying moderate volatility.
The moderate market share concentration and low profit margins within the market have not been beneficial for buyers, though. The declining number of suppliers operating in the market has inhibited buyers' ability to pit suppliers against one another to obtain lower pricing. Moreover, low profit margins within the market indicate that suppliers are typically inflexible on pricing because prices are as low as they can go, especially among wholesalers. Despite these adverse market characteristics, the moderate availability of viable substitutes, albeit with varying price points and total cost of ownership, have been beneficial for buyers, says Outlaw. Buyers also benefit from the moderate degree of product standardization. These market characteristics allow buyers to consider viable alternatives, while concurrently having access to a wide range of various colors and designs of commercial carpet.
Consolidation has been rising among all suppliers in the market. With fewer suppliers to choose from and increasing market share concentration, negotiation power will begin to tip in favor of suppliers, albeit not for a few years. Moreover, moderate price volatility has also been disadvantageous for buyers, leaving them at a higher risk of sudden and unexpected price increases during the period. With market share concentration set to continue rising, buyers should seek to secure their commercial carpeting needs now to protect against sudden price hikes and to have access to a larger pool of competitive suppliers. The top four vendors in the market are Dixie Group, Interface, Mohawk Industries, and Shaw Industries Group.
