05-07-2012 11:02 Walk through Kutná Hora with Honza, Dana and Niki on 5/20/2012. It was very windy, my Steadicam was useless and the video is a bit shaky. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Saint Barbara's Church in Kutná Hora (Bohemia) is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners (among others), which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines. Construction began in 1388, but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler, but studies say that Peter Parler had participated at least as a co-author of the draft design. Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1482, Mat?j Rejsek and Benedikt Rejt, two architects from Prague, assumed responsibility. The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the incomplete structure was enclosed by a provisional wall until 1884 and the roof was unfinished until the 19th century. The outside appearance is fascinating. Originally there were eight radial chapels with trapezoidal interiors. Later on, the choir was constructed, supported by double-arched flying ...

WINDSOR, Ont. Parishioners say the spirit will live on after a west end church closes at the end of the month and becomes a support centre for the needy.
Blessed Sacrament was sold by the Diocese of London to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for one dollar and will be used as a food hub, resale store and hospitality centre when the transfer takes place on July 27.
This place was always all about the poor. We helped the poor a lot and now its staying that way, just without the masses, said Margaret Murphy, lay pastoral minister for the church since 1995 and parishioner for nearly 30 years.
The spirit is still there and its just heavenly that they got it for $1. Were all very happy about that and it makes our transition out of here a little easier.
Murphy said what shell miss most about the church is that it was like a second home and family to her. She not only worked at the church, but also attended three masses there a week and the hominess and humbleness are at the root of all the memories shell always cherish.
The pews were packed at the farewell mass for the 75-year-old church Sunday and seven priests, along with Bishop Ronald Peter Fabbro, attended to celebrate the ceremony and mark the occasion.
Sisters Marilyn Fahringer, Laura Mazzali-Gingrich and Pat Steed grew up at the church and had all their sacraments done there, along with four other siblings. They lived in a house just down the street from the church and their parents, Peter and Vicki Mazzali, got married at Blessed Sacrament a year after it was built.
Steed, whos 73 years old, had to change churches a number of years ago because she requires a wheelchair but Blessed Sacrament is not wheelchair accessible. She wanted to return for the final mass, however, so the priest, Fr. Joe Langlois, agreed to meet her out front of the church moments before the mass began to give her communion.
It means a lot because I was baptized here as a baby so its kind of special, said Steed, who still resides on the citys west end.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
A church on Jacksonville's westside held a service on Sunday, just days after being flooded by Tropical Storm Debby's heavy rains.
The 103rd Street Baptist Church suffered thousands of dollars worth of damage to its floors and walls earlier in the week.
The inside of the church more closely resembled a construction zone on Sunday morning.

Long-time church members like Earl Graves have been working hours on end and the repairs have only just begun.
"You just have to take it one room at a time. Just do what we can do," said Graves.
The church has made remarkable progress over the last few days. Gone is the floodwater -- but so is much of the carpet and drywall.
Pastor James Turner said the concern now is mildew and bacteria.
"Mud, skinks, frogs. I mean, all kinds of stuff. We had to get all the creatures out first, and then still found some in the walls as we were going," he said.

REBECCA DUCKER/ MORNING NEWS Nearly 300 people gathered on the grounds of the New Ebenizer Baptist Church Monday morning as the 143 year old church held a kick off celebration for their 35,000 square foot community center on July 2, 2012. A vision of Rev. Norman Gamble which began 7 years ago is expected to be completed in about a year and will offer the church and the East Florence community a gathering place featuring class rooms and activity space.
A project seven years in the making is now under way in East Florence as New Ebenezer Baptist Church kicked off construction of a new 35,000 square foot-education and recreation facility.
A group of about 300 gathered Monday morning as the effort behind Vision 2005, the initative began by the Rev. Norman Gamble seven years ago with hopes of creating a facility to help unite the community, started to see the fruits of its labor.
Its an opportunity to increase the horizons of this community, Gamble said. We really want to engage this community.
The building may be new, but the idea of engaging the community is anything but at the church, which is more than 140 years old.
This used to be downtown Florence, church member Arron Davis said. Everything was here.
According to Davis, the church currently houses dozens of different community missions. The new facility will offer the congregation better meeting spaces and facilities to grow those missions even more. There will also be educational programs for youth and seniors, and officials hope to generate a GED partnership with Poynor Adult and Community Education Center.
The process of getting the project off the ground has truly united the congregation, Gamble said.
Having a goal really helps. If you know where you are going, you can get there, he said.
Although the project has taken years to get off the ground, the congregation feels the challenges faced were well worth the effort.

One event can change the course of one person's plans for life. Sometimes it can even change the plans of a church community.
Thats what happened when Joe Jeffreys visited Chelsea last winter to meet a local need.
The minute I walked in the building, it was an aha moment, said pastor Jeffreys, the new minister at the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ), 121 E. Middle St. in Chelsea.
Jeffreys was still in his final year at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago when he heard that the church was in need of someone to fill the pulpit on a substitute basis until they could find a new pastor.
Since there is an agreement between Evangelical Lutherans and the United Church of Christ, he volunteered to speak several times over the winter. Not only did he immediately fall in love with the church and its congregation, but they sensed that Jeffreys might be the pastor they were looking for.
Jeffreys received a call from the churchs search committee in March. After three interviews, including a meeting with his wife, Lisa, the church's committee asked him to be its pastor following his graduation.
Jeffreys said that the church went out on a limb to call him, since he doesnt fit the stereotypical minister for a church with a long history.
At the age of 51 and as a new seminary graduate, he lacks the years of experience as a head pastor that would be expected for a well-established congregation.
But even though he is beginning his first pastorate, Jeffreys is no stranger to church leadership. He began attending St. Georges Lutheran Church in Brighton about three decades ago when his two sons, Jacob and Joshua, were young.
Once I developed the relationship with Christ, my life changed, Jeffreys said. Continued...
