25-09-2011 13:49 Lalibela located in Northern Ethiopia is the site of 11 churches that have been cut entirely out of a single block of stone from top down into the ground. Lalibela was not built or constructed, but literally cut from stone. This amazing building technique is considered by many to be a mystery. This segment is from the "Ancient Aliens" season 3 episode 3 originally aired on the History channel and there was more than what I provide here. This is the only monolithic site known to be related directly to Christianity. In addition to the pure mystery surrounding these stone structures, there are also myths suggesting that Lalibela was also once used as a shield to protect the Ark of the Covenant.

11-12-2011 14:04 Rosslyn Chapel, originally named the Collegiate Chapel of St. Matthew, is a 15th-century church in the village of Roslin, seven miles from Edinburgh in Scotland. The chapel is famous both for its decorative art and its mysterious associations with the Knights Templar, the Holy Grail.. Rosslyn Chapel was intended to be one of more than 37 collegiate churches that were built in Scotland between the reigns of King James I and James IV (1406-1513). The chapel is actually the choir of what was intended to be a much larger cross-shaped church. The chapel was founded by Sir William Sinclair of the St. Clair family, a Scottish noble family from Orkney descended from Norman knights and, according to legend, linked to the Knights Templar. The foundation stone of Rosslyn Chapel was laid on St. Matthew's Day, September 21, 1446. After Sir William died in 1484, the larger building he had planned was never completed. Rosslyn Chapel's founder is buried in the chapel's foundation. Today, Rosslyn Chapel still functions as a place of worship for the Scottish Episcopal Church. What to See Rosslyn Chapel is relatively small, at 40' 8" high, 34' 8" wide, and 68' long. It has an asymmetrical shape, owing probably to its intended further construction. The Verona United Methodist Church building was designated a historic township landmark by the Verona Township Council at its Monday meeting. The Verona Landmarks Preservation Commission recommended the designation and at the meeting, members presented research about the building in making their case.

The 103-year-old Verona United Methodist Church building, at 26 Montrose Ave., has remained relatively unchanged since its construction.

Built in 1909, Verona United Methodist Church was designed by Chicago-based architect W.R. Brown, using what is known as the Akron Plan, said commission chairwoman Jane Eliasof. The Akron Plan is named such because it was first used in the design of a church in Akron, Ohio, in the late 1800s.

Akron Plan churches have pews arranged in a semi-circle facing the altar. Sliding walls are located behind the last row of pews, allowing the church to create a separate space for classrooms or meetings.

The Verona church's original pulley system for those sliding walls is still intact, according to a commission report distributed at the meeting.

Moreover, the exterior of the church has retained most of its original features through the years, Eliasof said. An addition was put on the building some years ago, but that construction did not affect the building's original structure. A small doorway connects the new to the old.

In addition to its "architectural integrity," Eliasof said the building is "vital" to Verona's history. The Methodist Church was the first religious organization to establish itself in Verona, she explained. The first Methodist Church was built in 1833 on the northeast corner of Bloomfield and Grove avenues. The Methodists worshiped there until constructing the building on Montrose Avenue, she said.

A building with landmark status can undergo future construction, so long as that construction is consistent with the building's current architectural styling, Eliasof told a reporter.

Additionally, landmarks can not be demolished "as easily" as non-landmarks, she said.

"This ensures that in the middle of the night, someone doesn't just come in and say, 'We're going to knock this down,'" she added. "That's the danger with any building in town that isn't landmarked."

There are three levels of historic designation: local/town, state and national.
