$42 million expansion of Rome company brings 42 new jobs – The Albany Herald - December 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

ATLANTA Gov. Brian Kemp has announced that VT Industries, a leading manufacturer of countertops and commercial doors, will invest $24 million in expanding its manufacturing operations in Rome. The expansion will increase VT Industries onsite employment by one-third, creating 42 new jobs in Floyd County.

The decision by VT Industries to expand in Georgia is a testament to the pro-business environment, unmatched work force, and robust logistics infrastructure that have made us the No. 1 State for Business for eight consecutive years, Kemp said in a news release. I want to thank VT Industries for their commitment to innovation and creating opportunities for hard-working Georgians in Floyd County.

Headquartered in Holstein, Iowa, VT Industries is North Americas leading provider of architectural wood doors, post-formed laminate countertops, butcher block countertops, and additional surfacing products. VT Industries Rome operation began in 1990, and the companys focus has been on laminate countertops since 1956. The company previously expanded its Rome presence in 2015 through the acquisition of Capitoline Products Inc., and currently employs 126 Georgians. Once the expansion is complete, the company will employ more than 167 people in northwest Georgia.

One of our core values at VT Industries is a commitment to innovation to support our customers in the surfaces industry, Director of Operations for VT Industries Ryan Miller said. We strive to provide opportunities to our team members and are excited to create an additional 40-plus jobs in northwest Georgia.

VT Industries will add 39,000 square feet to its current facility located at 1351 Redmond Circle in Rome. Due to the high demand for products, the expansion is expected to move quickly, and operations are anticipated to be completed by early 2022. New positions at the facility will include management, technician and operator roles. Individuals interested in opportunities with VT Industries are encouraged to visit vtindustries.com/company/careers for additional information.

This is an exciting announcement for VTI, and we are proud that they continue to grow in Rome and Floyd County, Jimmy Byars, chairman of the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority, said. Working with our existing industries and helping them expand is one of the most satisfying and productive things we can do to be successful in economic development.

Project Manager Tamara Brock represented the Georgia Department of Economic Developments Global Commerce division on this competitive project in partnership with the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority and Georgia Power.

As Ive said before, when a company chooses Georgia, they become a Georgia company, GaEDC Commissioner Pat Wilson said. Since 1990, VT Industries has been an important member of our northwest Georgia community, and we appreciate their decision to further invest in the state. I thank our partners in Rome and Floyd County for continuing to strengthen this relationship and supporting the state in creating a business-friendly environment that entices companies to grow here.

Granite Colors that Pair Perfectly with White Cabinets Wall Street Call – Reported Times - December 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

iCrowdNewswire Dec 17, 20203:00 PM ET

When it comes to designing a beautiful kitchen, cabinet color can make all the difference. These days, more and more homeowners have shown an affinity for white cabinets which provide a clean look that compliments diverse design concepts.

According to Zach Morrow of Rock Solid Custom Granite, a leading custom cabinet and countertop company in Denver, theres good reason this color has become such a trendy choice.

Fresh, timeless and adaptable, white cabinets are an enduring favorite in traditional and contemporary kitchen designs, said Morrow. They pair well with a wide variety of granite countertop patterns, allowing homeowners to choose from a diverse selection of colors to help bring their visions to life. That said, there are certain colors that provide better results.

For homeowners looking for ideal color contrasts between their counters and white cabinets, Morrow recommends the following granite counter colors:

Named for its ice-like formations, this stunning stone includes a scattering of translucent quartz and streaks of ebony feldspar amid bright white minerals. The granite has a nice deep pattern that provides some visual complexity to ordinary white-on-white bathrooms and kitchens.

Since white granite isnt completely white, you can have an all-white kitchen that doesnt necessarily look too stark. Originating in India, Colonial White is a gorgeous granite that blends cloudy silver with a pale gray along with a jet-black speckled accent that gives the surface depth. Placed atop white cabinets, the granite throws off muted hues that look great against warm cream walls and backsplashes, providing a nice amount of detail to monochromatic rooms.

Another granite originating in India, this deep black stone includes accents of gray in a sleek and subtle composite pattern. If youre designing a modern black and white kitchen, Black Pearl is a great alternative to Premium Black or Absolute Black Granite counters. If Black Pearl doesnt quite hit the mark, consider Cambrian Black Granite and Virginia Mist Granite which also have understated patterns that wont overwhelm the eye.

Bold granite countertops go especially well with white cabinets, making a powerful statement without creating a busy or overpowering design. For eye-catching patterns, Golden Lightning Granite is a great choice. This Italian granite contains gold, green and brown veining that combines to add a bit of moody drama to what might normally be a blah design. It looks great over a large kitchen island, especially when paired with a dramatic backsplash and some nice illuminating lighting.

Paired with white cabinets, this semi-iridescent, steely blue granite provides a fresh, soothing contrast and subdued, yet airy feel. Blue Pearl works well in traditional and contemporary kitchens. You may need to play with your backsplash and accessories to get the right look, however.

Colonial White Granite is a very popular choice for white-on-white kitchen designs. Fragments of dark gray and black minerals form a subtle constellation that stretches across the cool, gray background. You can tether the combination of white cabinets and white granite together with some nice white marble subway tiles for a clean-looking contemporary look.

When designing with white cabinets, its good to remember that any color of granite will appear different adjacent to varying hues of white. At the same time, it will also be affected by surrounding fixtures and hardware. Antico Cream, for instance, features a warm off-white background with gold and brown flecks that shimmer dramatically against white cabinets, bronze pulls and medium-tone natural wood floors.

With its bold pattern and simplicity of color, Silver Waves Granite is another beautiful variation on the black-and-white design theme. This striking granite is a lovely marble-esque swirl of black and white with a distinctive look that will make it the most unique feature in most homes.

Maintaining the rugged charm of the storied industrial age, Steel Grey Granite showcases a medium-composite pattern with a modest range of grays throughout. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners who want a modern, industrial-chic feel. A leathered or antique-finish can serve to further increase this look against plain white cabinetry.

A trendy granite from Brazil, Nevasca Mist flawlessly swirls together gray, beige and greige in a beautifully neutral palette with an easy, soothing pattern. It works especially well with cloudy white kitchen cabinets, surrounded by stainless appliances, nickel-plated pulls and contrasting lighting hardware.

Prioritizing our customers needs above all else, Rock Solid Custom Granite has earned a well-deserved reputation for being the most reliable custom cabinet and granite counters company in the Denver area. Our skilled designers and expert installers can help enhance your kitchen with custom cabinets, granite countertops and more.

Whether you want to keep up with contemporary trends or enhance an existing kitchen concept with fresh, eye-catching features, were here to help.

5 Ways 2020 Will Change the Way We Clean Forever – Yahoo Lifestyle - December 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

5 Ways 2020 Will Change the Way We Clean Forever

Take these cleaning lessons with you into 2021.

In 2020, the pandemic changed every aspect of our livesyes, including how we clean. Suddenly, cleaning was less about getting our places sparkling before guests came over, and more about properly disinfecting surfaces. Then, as we spent more time at home and cooked more often, we had to learn the easiest way to clean that burnt pot or pan. Here are a few of the major cleaning lessons we learned in 2020, and plan to continue in 2021. Our cleaning routines will never be the same.

RELATED: The 20 Best Cleaning Tips Weve Learned Over the Past 20 Years

When the pandemic began, many of us realized we needed a refresher course on a basic kindergarten lesson: the proper way to wash our hands. Most of us admit we weren't washing them long enoughat least 20 secondsor frequently enough.

And while hand sanitizer is a convenient solution when we're not at home, we learned that it's not a replacement for regular old hand-washing with soap and water.

RELATED: You're Probably Making These 7 Hand-Washing MistakesHere's What to Do Instead

Before 2020, disinfecting a countertop meant quickly rubbing a cleaning wipe along the surface. But this year, we learned the importance of contact time. Check the labels on your disinfecting wipes or spraysmost will tell you how long they need to sit on a surface in order to kill the most germs possible. Don't dry off the countertop until the recommended contact time is up.

Plus, did you know that disinfecting works best if you clean a surface first? Translation: remove visible grime, crumbs, and dust before using a disinfecting wipe.

RELATED: 7 Things You Should Sanitize Immediately to Avoid Getting Sick

Most of us had probably heard the term before, but it was in 2020 that we became intimately familiar with every single germ-infested "high-touch surface" in our homes. Some were obviouslike countertopsbut others we'd neglected cleaning for far too long (we're looking at you, light switch plates, steering wheel, and game controllers). We'll be adding these oft-forgotten spots onto our regular cleaning routine from now on.

    Story continues

For those of us who weren't exactly home cooks in pre-pandemic life, making our own meals resulted in a scorched pot or two. Luckily, we learned that deglazing isn't just a cooking termit's also an effective cleaning method. By adding water to the pot while it's still hot on the stove, the heat helps loosen up burnt-on food bits, so you can spend less time scrubbing. Follow these steps to make a scorched pot look shiny and new again.

After enough time spent at home this year, we started to notice dingy spots we'd ignored before, including soap scum-covered glass shower doors. The secret to making them sparkle: a homemade cleaning spray crafted from that bottle of white vinegar in our pantries. In 2021, we'll be using this easy cleaning hack to make our daily showers a little more spa-like.

Water Cooler: Make the most of a small kitchen – The Spokesman-Review - December 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The kitchen is meant to be a workspace, which is likely why people like them big. Would you look at all that counter space. But dont knock a small kitchen too quickly, because it can be a powerhouse of efficiency if you know how to maximize its utility.

If you have worked in a restaurant, you know that smooth workflow in the kitchen comes from just about anything other than bountiful space. Line cooks are squished into tiny workstations with their elbows tucked to their sides and everything they need within reach, while those buzzing around in their nonslip shoes yell corner, knife, or behind to avoid getting accidentally stabbed or scalded.

One can hope your home kitchen isnt this intense, but the point is that function comes more from a well-planned kitchen than from a sprawling one.

You dont want to have to make laps around the kitchen to cook. The design concept that helps avoid this is the work triangle. The triangle is made of the three most used work centers of a kitchen. The sink, refrigerator and cooktop.

The food is stored in the refrigerator, prepared at and around the sink and cooked on the cooktop. If arranged in a triangle, these work centers will be near each other and free of obstacles between them, allowing your movements about the kitchen to be streamlined. Whether you have enough room to walk between these areas or only pivot, a triangle formation will optimize your flow.

Avoid storing items on the countertop. The lack of clutter maximizes your preparation space, streamlines your workflow and keeps the counters cleaner. Move appliances and cooking utensils to cupboard or drawer storage if possible and forgo extra decorative items.

Use as much vertical space as possible, especially if youre also short on cabinet space. Hang cooking utensils, pot holders and oven mitts, pots and pans on the wall space using racks, hooks and magnets. Store fruit and vegetables in a tiered, hanging basket. Hang paper towel rolls under the cabinet. If you have a little extra floor space, add a tall shelf to house things like spices, kettles, spoon rests and scales.

Try moving things that dont require cooking to another part of the home. Display alcoholic beverage items like glassware, bottles and utensils on a bar in a sitting room or space nearby. You can do the same thing with coffee items such as mugs, electric kettles, coffee makers, pour overs and coffee beans. This frees up space for the main kitchen operations and makes for cute entertaining areas.

Create convertible spaces in the kitchen. This is most easily done with a rolling kitchen or cart. Its mobility gives you more prep space when and where you need it without taking up valuable walking space. Pull it up to the sink, counter or stove when in use, then move it against the wall when youre done. Add even more surface area with drop leafs. Use it to store extra seating, appliances or pots and pans.

The most obvious yet underrated tip is to declutter. A small kitchen forces you to prioritize, but that can be a benefit. Ask yourself what you want to make most often in your kitchen and get rid of the rarely used spices, condiments, utensils or gadgets that dont serve those aspirations.

The best part of enhancing the utility of your kitchen is that it makes you want to use it more, and thats what really makes it a workspace in the end.

In November, the Federal Trade Commission closed twoinvestigations into whether marketers made deceptive claims thattheir products are made in the United States. Perhapsinspired by the fact that we're spending so much time at homeduring the pandemic, last month, the FTC focused its "made inUSA" enforcement activities on the bathroom and the kitchen. In order to make an unqualified claim that a product is madein the United States, the FTC requires a marketer to substantiate that theproduct is "all or virtually all" made in the U.S.

The FTC looked into whether Dude Products overstated the extentto which its "Dude Wipes" and other hygienic products aremade in the United States. (As the company explains, Dude Wipes are "wet wipesspecifically for cleaning your butt and dude regions.")The FTC said that, all the company's wipes undergosignificant manufacturing or processing in the United States, insome instances they incorporate significant imported components.Although it's appropriate for a company to promote thefact that it supports other companies that perform manufacturingfunctions in the United States, in its letter closing the investigation, the FTC saidthat, "just because a supplier has a United States location,or conducts certain operations in the United States, does notnecessarily mean that the products it offers are 'all orvirtually all' made in the United States." The FTCcautioned that, "manufacturers and marketers would be wise toask the supplier for specific information about the percentage ofU.S. content before they make a U.S. origin claim."

The FTC also looked into whether Dal-Tile Corporation overstatedthe extent to which its "American Reserve" quartz slabproducts -- which can be used on floors, walls, and countertops, for example -- are made in the United States. The FTC saidthat, although the Company substantially transforms its AmericanReserve products into finished goods in the United States,"because quartz material has limited availability in the U.S.,the Company imports essential raw materials it incorporates intothese products." And, again, the FTC explained in itsclosing letter, that, although it's appropriatefor the company to promote the fact that it employs workers andperforms certain processes in the United States, the company'smarketing should not "overstate the extent to which productsare made in the United States." The FTC also cautionedthe marketer not to "make overly broad U.S.-origin claims onmarketing materials that refer to multipleproducts."

Both of these investigations highlight an area where marketersoften get tripped up when dealing with the FTC's "made inUSA" standard. Marketers often assume that, becausethey've got substantial manufacturing operations in the UnitedStates, it means that their products are made here. But, asboth of these closing letters explain, looking at where you makeyour products is not the end of the analysis. You've alsogot to look at a product's components and raw materials aswell, in order to determine whether they were foreign-sourced.If they were, then further analysis is required in order todetermine whether the foreign inputs are so negligible that theproduct can still be promoted as being made in the UnitedStates.

Before & After: Vail Spa unit in Lionshead gets an update – Vail Daily News - December 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

For this vail spa unit, an update was a couple years in the making. After a design and permitting period extending from November 2018 to April 2019, the actual construction took place in under 8 months. Kyle Webb, the architect of the project, explains the transformation that was completed last year for Equity Estates.

This Vail Spa unit sits in the heart of Lionshead and is surrounded by various types of architectural elements, shares Webb. Knowing this and that this unit was going to be inhabited by numerous people with various tastes the members of Equity Estates we knew we needed our design to be timeless and admired by many.

The existing unit had massive windows that begged to be highlighted. This was a key element that the team wanted to accentuate: natural light.

Webb adds that mixing modern steel and glass elements with warmer, softer woods and organic textures captured the essence of the units surroundings.

Maintaining a neutral fixed palette allows for any future flexibility in dcor, explains Webb. The current dcor was inspired by the mountain on which the site sits. We pulled warmer blue and tan earth tones to bring the outside in. The floor-to-ceiling windows at the living room and stair were also left intentionally unobstructed to make the user feel this connection to nature.

Some other details include Bavarian walnut floors, custom millwork and Italian interior doors. Also, a shou sugi-ban fireplace (described as the ancient Japanese technique of preserving wood by charring it with fire), a steel and glass staircase, quartz countertops, a flexible dining/living floorplan, leather upholstery, Thermador appliances, and designer finishes imported from around the world.

Timeless and appealing to many are often terms we hear clients desire, says Webb. Not only was this accomplished, but we were able to also incorporate a couple feature elements like metal-like cabinets, custom live-edge wood slab dining table on casters, and a feature fireplace wall made of traditional Japanese sugi-ban charred wood to make this unit different and stand out from any other.

When we noticed the per square foot value of a nearby new build product we realized we had plenty of room to invest in this home, adds Philip Mekelburg, CEO of Equity Estates. It has absolutely paid off and our members love it.
