Dutchess County Business Owner Hires Anthony Weiner as CEO – wpdh.com - September 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Disgraced politician, Anthony Weiner, has a new job thanks to a Hudson Valley Business Owner.

With everything happening this year you probably haven'tspent much time wondering what Anthony Weiner has been up to. I know I haven't. The former Democratic congressman stepped down from his position after he was caught in a sexting scandal. Of course, this was back in the day when people actually cared if politicians did creepy things. Years later, Weiner successfully repaired his image and led the race for Mayor of New York City until he was caught sending out photos of his crotch yet again. After we learned of his "Carlos Danger" alter-ego and pictures of Weiner's wiener were plastered on every news outlet across the country, his political career was pretty much destroyed beyond repair. Eventually,Weiner was sent to prison for sexting with an underage girl andwe never heard from him again -- until now because, you know, it's 2020.

According to the New York Post, a Rhinebeck businessman has given Anthony Weiner a new lease on life. Dal LaMagna is the owner of IceStone, a company that makes countertops out of recycled glass. After unsuccessfully running for congress years ago, LaMagna befriended Weiner and became a close friend, even visiting him during his time in prison.

LaMagna said that Weiner reached out to him for a job and was eventually hired as the company's CEO. The owner, wholives on afarm in Rhinebeck, says that Weiner hasbrought his son up to the Hudson Valley to visit and the former politician is "a lot of fun" and a "really funny guy."

It turns out that Weiner is pretty good at his job. Because he has so many New York connections and the company is based in Brooklyn, Weiner has been helping to turn the company around. Since starting a few months ago, Weiner has introducednew products with the colors of New Yorkers' favorite teams. Mets fans can now get a kitchen countertop with highlights of blue and orange glass pieces.

LaMagna claims that Weiner is a better CEO than he is, and has lots of hope for the company under his helm. Let's just hope he puts someone else in charge of the business' Twitter account.

This Kitchen Makeover Makes the Case for Bold Color Blocking – Architectural Digest - September 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

AFTER: The mint green wall balances the deep tones of the teal cabinets and the yellow shine of the brass backsplash and hardware.

So Camille and Carole set about reorganizing the space, focusing on relocating elements and circulation so that their clients living-dining-cooking spaces flowed better and centered around an unexpected multifunctional feature: two back-to-back benches, one for the dining table and the other for the living room, says Camille. By placing the bench so that it serves both the kitchen/dining and living rooms, it also acts as a de facto divider between the two spaces. To further delineate this separation, they placed a partition with clear glass and a black frame that stretched from the top of the bench to the underside of the ceiling. The glass partition was a specific request from the client, drawing the eye up to the high ceiling while still maintaining views across the spaces.

The wall in the kitchen is painted with Farrow & Balls Teresas Green.

In the kitchen, Coci Studio further emphasized the ceiling height with two different strategies: We extended the cabinets up to the ceiling along one wall, using the verticality of the space, and then along another wall only used lower cabinets. The two opposite strategies play with a single characteristic of the space, explains Camille. When it came to deciding on a material palette, the idea was for the kitchen to be a composition of elements in brass, marble, and light, Camille says. A white marble countertop with undulating yellow-gray veining contrasts with a shining brass backsplash, cabinet hardware, and toe kickall set against a mint background, free of upper cabinets that would clutter the space. The lower cabinets and an adjacent wall with full-height cabinetry were outfitted with wood doors, but rather than leaving them with a natural finish, Coci Studio selected a deep green stain that employed a dramatic color choice without totally masking the movement and organic nature of the wood.

The ash wood cabinets contrast with the Portuguese marble countertop, which has grooves cut into the countertop for drainage.

A key element of the kitchen was the ventilation hood, which Camille notes is usually not the most attractive object in the kitchen. Its often overlooked, camouflaged. But, she determined, it has the potential to be a beautiful focal point, giving character to a kitchen, and so Coci Studio clad it in the same shining brass as the backsplash and gave it a strong, sleek geometrical form. It sits almost like a piece of sculpture on the wall, simple yet evocative.

The spice shelf was custom-made with hooks and a towel rack.

The table in the living area marries the marble of the kitchen counters and the metal of the glass partition.

In the living room, Camille and Carole continued elements found in the kitchen, designing a small coffee table with the rest of the marble from the countertop and continuing the same metal used for the glass partition frames. We imagined this space as a whole where each element responds to one other, notes Camille, and the consistency and mix of playful materials across the multiple spaces reflects this perfectly.

Where home brewing and microbiology intersect – La Salle University - September 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A non-traditional project in professor Brian DeHavens course calls attention to the practical applications of laboratory microbiology.

For two hours, Brian DeHavens kitchen became his classroom. His countertop acted as a makeshift lab table.

On this September day, DeHaven guided his students through a detailed step-by-step process that called for steeping, boiling, and ice-bathing various materials. His students monitored the color and consistency of their concoctions. They noted mixed resultsOne student had sediment firmly stuck to the bottom of her container. Another referred to the material as slime-like.

Remember, we want to be drinking this stuff next week, not chewing on it, said DeHaven, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at La Salle University.

For 22 students in DeHavens upper-level microbiology course, this was not a standard laboratory experiment. Its actually a semester-long, beer-brewing project that requires precision and attention to detail.

A broader move in the biology discipline is seeing instructors across the country convert traditional textbook learning and components of classroom instruction into hands-on laboratory experiments. Popularly, in recent years, professors like DeHaven rely on beer-brewing to call students attention to the practical applications of laboratory microbiology.

For DeHavens course, students scheduled times to visit La Salles campus and retrieve beer-brewing kits from Holroyd Hall. (Only one student needed DeHaven to ship the kit by mail.) Under DeHavens watchthrough a synchronous Zoom sessionthe students boiled water before adding material from their kits, like a sugar source (dried malt extract) and hop pellets, which are actually antimicrobial. Hops are in beer, he said, to keep out other elements that will get you sick. The addition of yeast represented the final step. The concoction, DeHaven said, needed to cool before yeast is introduced to preventamong other outcomeskilling the cells before they can make any alcohol.

Once they get the basics down, students capture wild yeast by placing a petri dish filled with agar outside of their homes.

Wild yeast is pervasive. Its literally everywhere. Its in the air. You could swab bark or leaves, for example, as a way to capture it, said DeHaven, who introduced this project and has overseen it for three years. (This years project is a bit different, as La Salle is delivering a majority of its fall courses through remote instruction.)

Upon adding yeast, DeHavens students used a hydrometer to measure the materials specific gravity. This calculation helps brewmasters determine the alcohol by volume (ABV) and the calorie count of a beer. The projects objective, DeHaven said, is for students to question their recipes, procedures, and scientific methods to improve the taste of their beer each time the process is repeated.

Two of DeHavens students are not of legal drinking age. That doesnt take away from the projects value, he said, because their calculations will tell the story.

In past years, DeHavens students have presented their brewed beverages as a competition at La Salles Holroyd Symposiumduring which students across the STEM disciplines showcase their work from the fall semester. While that is unlikely to transpire this year, DeHaven said he is working behind the scenes to highlight his students accomplishments. He is in discussions with a local brewery to position his amateur brewers for internships. Hes also detailed the project in an article he has submitted for journal publication.

I developed this lab to show students that what they learn in lecture has real-life, practical applications, DeHaven said. Being able to teach a lab virtually has been a wonderful bonus.

Gallery: HGTV stars Heather and Brad Fox sell their $1.25M Edina home – Bring Me The News - August 25, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Press Play Media LLC

The husband and wife couple behind HGTV series Stay or Sellhave sold their Edina home, but won't be moving too far away.

Heather and Brad Fox announced to their Facebook followers this past week that their $1.25 million home on Dawson Lane was on the market.

It didn't stay on the market for long either, with Heather Fox confirming to BMTN that it has since been sold to a "very sweet fam!"

The couple have made a name for themselves and risen to national prominence for their stylish home remodels in the Twin Cities, having transformed what was a rambler on Dawson Lane into the 4,035-square-feet two story family home after buying it in 2016.

The five-bedroom house was finished with custom walnut cabinets, Cambria quartz countertops and a walk-in pantry in the kitchen, an open staircase with oak slab stairs, an office, and a children's playroom.

Now they've got their sights on another labor of love, having bought "another project house" just a few blocks away on Lake Cornelia.

Heather says selling their home is "bittersweet," with work on their new one expected to take up to a year.

It's been a busy year for the Foxes despite the pandemic, having also opened their studio and lifestyle shop, Foxwell, at 44th and France in Edina.

The pair are also hoping to return to HGTV screens soon, though the virus has delayed a potential second series of Stay or Sell.
