Granite – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - August 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular and phaneritic in texture. The word "granite" comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a holocrystalline rock. The term 'granite' also applies to a group of intrusive igneous rocks with similar textures and slight variations on composition and origin. These rocks mainly consist of feldspar, quartz, mica, and amphibole minerals, which form interlocking, somewhat equigranular matrix of feldspar and quartz with scattered darker biotite mica and amphibole (often hornblende) peppering the lighter color minerals. Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is known as a granite porphyry. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy. By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz and up to 65% alkali feldspar by volume. Granite differs from granodiorite in that at least 35% of the feldspar in granite is alkali feldspar as opposed to plagioclase; it is the potassium feldspar that gives many granites a distinctive pink color. The extrusive igneous rock equivalent of granite is rhyolite.

Granite is nearly always massive (lacking any internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use throughout human history, and more recently as a construction stone. The average density of granite is between 2.65[1] and 2.75 g/cm3, its compressive strength usually lies above 200 MPa, and its viscosity near STP is 36 1019 Pas.[2] Melting temperature of dry granite at ambient pressure is or 12151260 C (22192300 F);[3] it is strongly reduced in the presence of water, down to 650 C at a few kBar pressure.[4]

Granite has poor primary permeability, but strong secondary permeability.

Granitoid is a general, descriptive field term for lighter-colored, coarse-grained igneous rocks. Petrographic examination is required for identification of specific types of granitoids.[5]

The term "granitic" means granite-like and is applied to granite and rocks of similar composition or texture.

The rock known as "black granite" is usually gabbro.[6]

Granite is classified according to the QAPF diagram for coarse grained plutonic rocks and is named according to the percentage of quartz, alkali feldspar (orthoclase, sanidine, or microcline) and plagioclase feldspar on the A-Q-P half of the diagram. True granite according to modern petrologic convention contains both plagioclase and alkali feldspars. When a granitoid is devoid or nearly devoid of plagioclase, the rock is referred to as alkali feldspar granite. When a granitoid contains less than 10% orthoclase, it is called tonalite; pyroxene and amphibole are common in tonalite. A granite containing both muscovite and biotite micas is called a binary or two-mica granite. Two-mica granites are typically high in potassium and low in plagioclase, and are usually S-type granites or A-type granites.

A worldwide average of the chemical composition of granite, by weight percent, based on 2485 analyses:[7]

In 1959, I returned from the U.S. Army Reserves, rented a small garage down the street from my house and started building custom kitchens for neighbors and friends. It is hard to believe that was 54 years ago because it seems like only yesterday. However now is the time for me to catch more fish and paint more sunsets. My wife Shirley is also ready to retire and relax.

Current employee Karl Altenberger and his wife Emilie will become the new owners of C.C.K. on May 1, 2014. Karl is a Union Carpenter and has been with C.C.K. for over 8 years. He has a unique blend of experience both in the shop and on the job site that will be a great benefit to our customers. Emilie has experience in banking, insurance, and customer service and will use her skills to manage the office at C.C.K. Together they will make a great team.

I am 100% confident in Karl and Emilies ability to lead this company into the next generation and beyond. Rest assured that you will continue to receive the same quality products and excellent customer service, and you will be dealing with the same staff that you have come to know and trust through the years. Shirley, Doug and I have agreed to assist as needed in 2014 to ensure a smooth ownership transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please dont hesitate to contact us.

Once again, I want to thank you for your support and friendship over the past 54 years. This isnt goodbye but simply See you again soon! I have a blank canvas for the first time since 1959 and I couldnt be more excited!

Polished Concrete Countertops | Decorative Concrete of … - May 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Concrete has substance and mass, permanence and warmth. It feels earthy, and is at home in both traditional and modern settings. It assumes forms that irrevocably touch our daily lives: bridges, highways, floors, walls even countertops. Concrete is also surprisingly tactile. Cast and shaped, it can feel like stone rounded by the sea. Textured and colored, it can echo the patina of timeworn tile.

    -Fu Tung Cheng

Polished Concrete Countertops are perfect for homeowners and designers who want a solid surface countertop that is different than typical granite or marble.

The advantage to using concrete is that it is completely customizable. We can provide virtually any color and shape. We can also add special colored aggregates to the surface to give the each countertop a truly unique look.

We start by making templates on top of existing cabinetry. We take the templates back to our shop and build forms upside down out of glass or laminate wood.

Once the forms are built, we start the process of spraying and pouring the concrete.

The first step is to spray the forms with a colored concrete mix. After the forms are sprayed, we fill them the rest of the way with glass fiber reinforced concrete. By using glass fiber, we are able to cast concrete counters that are significantly lighter weight than traditional concrete.

After the concrete has cured for a few days, we remove the forms and flip them over and begin polishing the surface with diamond grinders. We start at 50 grit and work our way up to 1500 grit which leaves a polished finish. Finally, the countertops are sealed and waxed.
