Scott Bradley Hutsell - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Scott BradleyHutsell

    September 5, 1957 ~ August 26,2014

Scott Bradley Hutsell, born September 5, 1957, gifted finish carpenter and artist, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at the young age of 56, at his home in Wenatchee, WA, after a longillness.

He is survived by his wife, Felicity of Wenatchee; parents, Holly and Leland Hutsell of Moses Lake, WA; siblings, Wayne (Rebecca) Hutsell of Moses Lake, WA and Lisa (Matt) Hutsell-Mattson of Ashburn, VA; and many nieces andnephews.

Scott graduated Moses Lake High School in 1975, and attended Big Bends Community College Flight Program, receiving his pilots license in 1977. After experiencing a particularly hair-raising, nail biting, body slamming flight within the eye of a nasty storm, he wisely made the decision to pursue his second love, carpentry, at which he proved himself extraordinarily talented. He continued in this field for the whole of his working life, in great demand by builders of custom homes from Spokane, through all of North Central Washington, to Seattle. The most notable custom home he worked on was Nathan Myhrvolds T-Rex dinosaur home in the Seattle neighborhood of Medina, having been asked to construct a staircase railing out of dinosaur bones. A second notable carpentry job was his work at the Sleeping Lady Resort in Leavenworth, WA. He was a true craftsman and did beautiful work. When not exercising his creative imagination in custom homes, he liked to cut and dry flowers and incorporate them into fanciful designs on tumbled stone topped gift boxes. These the Seattle Space Needle sold to people from all over the world. Many of his friends and family learned to keep a wary eye on him as he strolled through their flower gardens with a discerning eye and his ever handy flower clippers peeking out his backpocket!

Scott loved life and lived it fully, enjoying many activities, including camping, hiking, cooking, boating, barbecuing, water and snow skiing, kite flying, and traveling. He had a unique bond with all animals, rescuing several and giving a home to many, including a pig, an iguana, wild birds fallen from nests, a goat, and numerous cats and dogs. Scott had a gentle spirit and was profoundly kind and giving to all he knew. He easily forgave us our human foibles and religiously displayed an exemplary patience, both within his relationships and his craft. People could not help but love him in return. And though we celebrate all he gave to others and the ending of his pain, those he left behind will sorely miss the light he lent to ourlives.

His Celebration of Life will be held at the Moses Lake Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with lunch included. In lieu of memorial donations, please reach out to someone you know and show them a kindness in his honor, even if its as simple as giving them a beautiful flower. Please express your thoughts and memories on the online guestbook at jonesjonesbetts.com. Arrangements by Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home,Wenatchee.

S.J. Janis Company to Showcase Brookfield Home at 2014 MBA Parade of Remodeled Homes with Cooking Demonstration by … - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wauwatosa, WI (PRWEB) September 03, 2014

The S.J. Janis Company, a business of certified home remodelers, is participating in the 2014 Metropolitan Builders Associations 2014 Parade of Remodeled Homes on September 6th and 7th from noon to 4PM. Featured this year is a mid-century modern Brookfield home with a kitchen, dining room, living room and mudroom all recently remodeled as an open concept design. The renovations, modern accents, and cantilevered light shelves highlight this homes linear lines throughout the updated spaces. In addition, a custom designed Chef Feker approved kitchen will have a cooking demonstration from 1PM to 3PM each day at 17425 Mierow Lane, Brookfield, WI 53045.

The homeowners approached S.J. Janis with very specific needs and requests for their familys home. Nathan Wachtl, CR, UDCP, S.J. Janis senior design consultant, said, The owners were happy with their homes location and square footage, but the challenges of adapting space for entertainment versus family function required an innovative design solution. An elegantly modern aesthetic is now apparent as you enter the home.

The homeowners architecture background allowed for a great collaboration with S.J. Janis during the projects design phase. The design of the remodeled space did have its challenges when addressing the homeowners requests. With the removal of a load bearing wall and a repurposed flow into a connecting mudroom, all public space now develops a cohesive design with contrasting woodwork. Strong linearity and a full height custom tile backsplash compliment the modern style of the home, said Joe Klein, UDCP, CKBR, S.J. Janis Company director of design.

Horizontal-grained quartersawn cherry cabinetry introduce an abundance of storage with an integrated homework station and organization center. A fireplace facelift and open basement staircase with nickel balusters completes the design vision.

To demonstrate the use of the kitchen remodel, Chef Michael Feker will be cooking items for attendees to taste on the new 48 Wolf range with griddle. A large 42 stainless Sub-Zero refrigerator will also be used during the demonstration. Chef Fekers expertise in cooking allows for a unique perspective in kitchen design. He will be speaking about how to design your kitchen around the types of food your family enjoys. Converting your old kitchen into a personalized cooking domain provides for great food and a happy family. I am all about enhancing the great things that happen around food. We also have to remember that great food is made in home kitchens. So my involvement in showcasing remodeled homes and kitchens is soul feeding. I love kitchen design as much as I love using the kitchen. Come and taste my passion for food at 17425 Mierow Lane, Brookfield, WI 53045. Mention this article for free admittance, said Feker.

S.J. Janis Company, an award-winning remodeler with four Certified Professionals on staff, is a member of several home improvement associations, including the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council, National Kitchen & Bath Association, and the Metropolitan Builders Association.

In addition, the company is a member of GuildQuality, an independent third-party company that interviews every client about his or her remodeling experience throughout the building process and provides immediate results to the Guild member. S.J. Janis is recognized as a Guildmaster with the Highest Distinction by the organization and is Milwaukees highest rated Remodeler by Guild Quality for Customer Service.

For the 25th consecutive year, the S.J. Janis Company was a recipient of Wisconsin Remodeler of the Year Awards from the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council, the only company to be recognized in each year of the award competition. Awards garnered in the 2013 competition were a gold award in the Universal Design category, and silver awards in the Residential Addition Under $60,000 and Residential Kitchen $80,000 - $120,000 categories.

How to Deal with a Bad Contractor - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It seems like everyone has a horror story when it comes to their home remodeling or repair experience.

According to a recent survey by referral website Angies list, 52% of the more than 12,000 home owners polled reported problems with their contractor. Whats more, 27% were so unhappy they fired the professional before the job was complete.

While the reasons for the unhappiness varied from contractors who made a mess to ones that took too long to complete the work, there are ways to avoid having your next home improvement project end up in small claims court.

It all starts with how you go about the hiring process, says Paul Sullivan, chair of National Association of Home Builders Remodelers and a remodeler. Doing your due diligence is the best way to not only protect yourself, but ensure a positive remodeling experience.

Before starting the search, ask for referrals from friends and family. Sullivan also recommends contacting your local builders association to get a list of members. You should also ask potential candidates for references and verify they are properly licensed.

Once youve created a list of three contractors, Angie Hicks, founder of Angies List, suggests meeting with them in person to make sure your personalities mesh.

Theres no sense in hiring someone you cant trust from the get-go. Lets face it: There may be wrinkles along the way and you want to feel comfortable addressing them, she says.

Equally important to who you hire is how the contract is crafted. Hicks says homeowners should spend a good amount of time negotiating a contract that outlines all expectations as well as a payment schedule.

The contract should also include the process to change the order even if you are using custom materials or products. Whats more, experts say you want to make sure there is a termination clause and an explanation of what will happen if both parties have a dispute. Sullivan says he puts an arbitration clause in all his contracts to cover disputes. An arbitration clause is not a bad thing to have in there; rather than going to a full blown lawsuit where everybody loses, he says.

Taking precautions upfront is going to lessen youre risk but it doesnt mean something wont go wrong. But before it gets ugly or you fire your contractor, experts say to communicate regularly about what you want and what you are unhappy with.

Area homebuilders are bullish - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Barclay Allen is a medium-sized builder of custom homes in the Fort Wayne area. The company of which hes president, Timberlin Homes, doesnt build hundreds of houses every year its more like 20 to 25, he says.

But, standing on the back porch of a home the company just built for this years Parade of Homes & Lifestyle Show in the Forest of Foxwood addition in northeast Fort Wayne, hes a happy man.

This year, the company has seen an increase in sales and plenty of orders. Ive got people looking to build two or three years out, as well as currently, Allen says. I think it (the market) is looking very good. I would say Im encouraged.

After several years of bad news, those who provide new homes for area residents have, for the most part, regained optimism from the slow climb out of the doldrums.

Since 2010, says Dave Fuller, Allen County Building Department commissioner, building permits for new homes generally have been trending higher, and affordability has remained strong, compared with the situation in other markets.

In 2009, Fuller says, a low of 390 permits were issued through Aug. 18. By 2011, that number was 419 permits during the same time frame and by 2012, 444. Last year, the number rose to 529.

This year, permits are down again, to 466, a 12 percent drop. But Fuller says he attributes that to the prolonged cold winter, which delayed the building season, and not an economic slump. He believes the numbers will catch up by years end, despite news this month that nationally, sales of new homes fell in July by 2.4 percent.

In any case, Fuller says, the numbers now represent a more sustainable situation.

Current housing starts are dwarfed by the boom years of 2006 and 2007, when about 1,900 homes were being built, Fuller says. We were overbuilding tremendously there, he says, noting the overheated atmosphere was fueled by lower-end volume builders. Some of them have gone out of business, and the overstock has been largely sold through, Fuller says.

He says the area can easily support 800 to 900 new homes a year.
