Bangladeshs Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals by main opposition leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, clearing the way for her trial on graft charges which could see her jailed for life if found guilty.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected her leave to appeal petitions...now there is no legal barrier in trying her on corruption charges, Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul told reporters.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain delivered the order upholding a previous identical decision by the High Court, saying she must face trial in the lower court on the graft charges over the orphanage, which was named after her slain husband ex-president Ziaur Rahman.

Tutul said the court also resumed hearing another appeal filed by Zia against a High Court ruling that validated her indictment by the lower court in a separate corruption case involving Zia Charitable Trust, a philanthropic organisation.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which brought the charges against the 69-year-old two-time premier, however, said both the charities existed only in papers.

The ACC in 2009 filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against her on charge of embezzling a huge amount of money by forming a fake trust and filed the other case in 2011 on charge of abusing power during setting up the trust.

Her elder son and BNPs senior vice president Tarique Rahman and seven others were also accused in the two cases.

Ms. Zia and three of her aides are accused of drawing off about USD 400,000 from the Zia Charitable Trust.

She is also accused of leading a group of five people, including her eldest son, in embezzling USD 277,000 which were meant to go to an orphanage set up in memory of her husband, a military ruler turned politician who was assassinated in 1981.

Lawyers said Ms. Zia and other accused could be jailed for life if found guilty.

Decks have been cleared to ease traffic bottleneck on the busy Bellary Road leading to the Kempegowda International Airport and Jayamahal Road after the Supreme Court allowed widening of the two roads on Friday.

The road-widening work had come to a standstill for nearly four years after the last scion of Mysore Wadiyar dynasty late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar approached the Supreme Court, seeking compensation under the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), which the State had refused to provide.

On Friday, the Supreme Court directed the State government to provide TDR to six persons, including Pramoda Devi, wife of the late scion. The others who will receive TDR are the late scions sisters Minakshi Devi, Kamakshi Devi, Vishalakshi Devi and Indrakashi Devi, and Ramachandra Raje Urs.

We are happy with the court order. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), without the Supreme Courts permission, had taken up the widening work and had not acceded to our demand. Two heritage structures Coffee Room and Post Office were demolished, C.K. Venkatesh, Ms. Pramoda Devis counsel, told The Hindu. The next course of action would be decided after meeting the family members, he said.

A top BBMP official said preliminary discussions to revive the road-widening project had been held. The Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared in 200910, has to be revised. Tenders for the roadworks will be floated soon after the estimates are revised, the official said, and added that the TDR would be issued before taking up the work.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters on Saturday that the widening of the two roads around the Palace Grounds would be completed soon.
