Library decks the hall with books - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

When it came time to decorate for the holidays, the Lompoc Public Library used something it has plenty of books.

The lobby of the library at 501 E. North Ave. boasts a Christmas tree standing more than 6 feet tall and made totally from books with red bows providing additional adornment.

The book tree is topped by a decoration made, of course, from a book with its pages folded to look like an angel.

People who are coming in and seeing it in the lobby are loving it, Library Director Ashlee Chavez said of the book tree.

To see the tree, the library is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Its closed Sundays.

The Lompoc Public Library will be closed Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. On New Years Eve, Dec. 31, the library will close at 5 p.m.

Among upcoming holiday events, the library will host a special holiday storytime at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Grossman Gallery. Kids will get to meet the chief character from Llama Llama Red Pajama and receive a free book with a craft. For more information, call 875-8781.

RACHEL BOLAND/SPECIAL TO THE COURIER NEWSWEEKLY A room full of Mangrove Bay residents marveled at the sight of Executive Chef Billy Rainhas life-sized gingerbread house as the curtains were dropped and the magical creation was unveiled.

On a recent Monday evening, the main lobby at the senior lifestyle community Mangrove Bay was transformed into a beautiful and fragrant place of holiday essence, all while residents and staff sang along to Christmas carols and enjoyed eggnog and cookies.

Long-time Mangrove Bay resident Janet Lee was given the honor of lighting the Christmas tree, while her resident friends and staff marveled at the sight.

The elegant ceremonial Menorah display celebrated the eight days of Hanukkah as well.

The much anticipated attraction of the evening was the unveiling of the charming life-size gingerbread house, made by Executive Chef Billy Rainha.

According to Chef Rainha, the creation was started on Oct. 1 and took just more than 100 hours.
