Karate student decks man in Fresno apartment - November 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FRESNO, Calif.

A Fresno man got an early morning beat down after being pummeled by a karate student who found him drunk in her bathroom.

Jannine Ramirez had just won a karate competition when she arrived at her Fresno apartment early Sunday and heard someone in the bathroom. Ramirez, 20, kicked down her bathroom door, then kicked the intruder through a shower door.

She continued with an onslaught of kicks and punches until Wilberto Zapata, 18, was outside her apartment.

"We didn't recognize him," Ramirez said. "Me and my mom live in the apartment, so no guy whatsoever should be in there."

Zapata recently moved into the apartment complex and mistakenly went into the wrong apartment unit, police said.

Ramirez has a yellow belt - a step above beginner - and expects to be promoted to orange belt next month at during a competition in Fresno

She has been a karate and Muay Thai kick-boxing student for a year. Saturday was her first competition.

"I was actually more nervous in the competition than I was trying to get this intruder out of my house," said Ramirez, who attends Fresno City College and plans to study physical therapy at Fresno State University. "I literally kicked him all the way through my house."

Police said Zapata was drunk and thought he had broken into his own apartment. He was cited for unlawful entry into a home and released. A phone listing for Zapata could not be found.

Village Green Apartment Community Replaces Wood Decks with AridDek Aluminum Decking by Wahoo Decks for Its Strength … - November 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Community replaces aging wood balconies with AridDek, a cost effective, sustainable decking product with unmatched safety ratings.

Gainesville, GA (PRWEB) November 01, 2012

Village Green wanted to replace the wood balconies with a product that would sustain long-term exposure to the elements and ensure fire safety, all without sacrificing aesthetics. After an extensive review of products, Phillips recommended AridDek for not only meeting these needs, but also exceeding them.

With a tongue-in-groove design that provides a beautiful, low-maintenance non-combustible deck surface, AridDek also incorporates an integrated gutter system to create a dry, usable area under the deck. Its textured powder coating provides a safe, non-skid surface that naturally stays cooler to the touch than traditional decking planks. Unlike composite decking products, AridDek has a zero fire rating, is non-combustible and wont smolder.

My goal was to recommend durable, safe building materials that would save the property owner money on future maintenance. AridDek was the natural front runner, said Randy Phillips, CEO of Phillips Service Company. I was well aware of the benefits of AridDek but felt especially confident when the county building inspector was also impressed by its strength.

We are committed to designing and bringing the strongest and most reliable products to market, said Jon Bailey, Vice President of Wahoo Decks. That being said, we also think our customers shouldnt have to sacrifice aesthetics for safety and long-term durability. To that end, weve put a lot of energy and research into creating AridDek so that communities like Village Green get a product that exceeds their expectations and enhances the overall appearance of the building.

Village Green also installed Wahoo Rail, low-maintenance, pre-drilled and pre-cut aluminum rail kits that won't warp, rot or decay.

    About Wahoo Decks

Plan B x Nixon release the Soundclash Project - October 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plan B and Nixon release the Soundclash Project with boards, wheels andspeakers

    Updated: October 19, 2012, 7:06 PM ET

Plan B Skateboards and Nixon just released the Soundclash Project, which they describe as being "A limited collaboration of sight and sound." This signature series of skateboard decks, wheels and a TPS (Travel Party Solution) speaker. Visual-appeal not withstanding, this collab works because the five pro skaters selected all ride for both companies. Each pack has a corresponding color-way for Colin McKay, Danny Way, Paul Rodriguez, Torey Pudwill and Ryan Sheckler. Nixon co-founder and VP of Marketing Chad DiNenna put a lot of thought into the Soundclash Project, which came together over the course of seven months. DiNenna explains, "We like the idea of not milking the skate community, [while] building things they need and would use, and leave out the knick knacks that people tend to add in as revenue drivers. We were focused on the skaters and what they needed more than anything."

It appears as though the TPS speaker, the one thingthat is not like the others,is the best part of the deal. DiNenna explains, "The TPS has been incredibly successful for us and because everyone on the team travels with it, it made a lot of sense." With function and portability in mind, Nixon made the speaker weigh less than a pound, and with 3.5mm connectivity it easily plugs into iPods and laptops. And it's louder than expected! Nixon "aggressively tuned it to milk every decibel possible." It has a rechargeable battery that charges from your computer's USB port and the battery life lasts up to six hours. The speaker's body is made from one piece of strong aluminum and if you have more than one, you can connect them for more volume and better sound. DiNenna can't stop singing its praises. "This thing is extremely tough, sounds great and can go anywhere, and that is what the team needs for a life on the road."

One complete Soundclash Project set will run you just under $200 but both companies wisely gave retailers the option to sell all 20 items separately, so anybody can afford any part of this high-quality collaboration. DiNenna says, "We could have made it that way and just say all or nothing but who wins in this situation? A lot of people wouldn't be able to get a piece of it. Thinking about the skaters, most are not running around with $200 bucks burning a hole in their pockets so we wanted the flexibility of getting what you need first, and filling in the rest of the collection from there."

San Mateo Bridge work ahead of schedule - October 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Caltrans officials canceled a second closure of the San Mateo Bridge scheduled for next weekend after deciding Sunday that construction crews could complete all of their repairs by early Monday morning.

The 7-mile-long bridge between Foster City and Hayward, which carries about 92,000 vehicles each weekday, was expected to reopen on schedule at 5 a.m. Monday in time for the morning commute.

"That second weekend work, we were able to complete this weekend," said Traci Ruth, a Caltrans spokeswoman.

So instead of shutting down for a second weekend at 10 p.m. Friday, as it was last weekend, the San Mateo Bridge will remain open.

"There won't be any detours or any closures," Ruth said.

Caltrans officials decided Saturday night to try to complete the work in a single weekend after making more progress more quickly than expected. Workers removed and replaced decks on the part of the span between the elevated segment and the trestles, along with a cracked beam - part of an expansion joint - discovered during a routine inspection in October 2010. Caltrans performed emergency repairs on the bridge then, installing steel plates on both sides of the damaged joint.

Fixing it permanently will cost about $3 million, which will come from toll funds. Completing the work in a single weekend won't increase the cost, Ruth said.

The original plan was to complete repairs to the westbound section of the bridge last weekend and work on the eastbound section next weekend. The contractor replaced the westbound decks sooner than anticipated, so Caltrans engineers looked at the work that needed to be completed, decided it could be completed a little more quickly if done all at once, and figured it could be finished before the 5 a.m. Monday reopening.

Even rain, forecast to start late Sunday night, shouldn't slow construction, but Caltrans has contingency plans if the rains are heavier than anticipated, Ruth said.

The bridge closure failed to snarl Bay Area traffic over the weekend, despite the Big Game in Berkeley and the usual assortment of festivals around the region. Drivers were advised to use the Dumbarton Bridge or the Bay Bridge, which seemed to handle the increased traffic without unusual backups.
