There's not a whole lot to do in prison, so inmates spend a fair amount of time playing cards.
For several years, law enforcement officials around the country have been putting that prisoners' pastime to good use. They've been putting facts and photos from unsolved crimes in front of prisoners' eyes by printing them on decks of cards, hoping to generate leads.
Colorado is the latest state to produce the cold case cards. Cold case analyst Audrey Simkins of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation tells NPR's Tamara Keith the department has put out one set of cards and is creating two more for release next month.
"A program that allows the case to be seen and viewed by a lot of people who may have input or information really just gets the case moving forward and allows the investigators to work on whatever leads may come in," Simkins says.
Colorado has nearly 1,600 cold cases, which they define as cases that are unsolved 3 years after the crime, she says. Officials sifted through those cases to find the most likely candidates for a photo and description to print on the cards' faces.
The decks are generating tips, although none of the cases on the first deck have been solved since the cards were issued in the fall, she says.
"We've gotten about four dozen tips so far," Simpkins says. "I think the fact that the phones are ringing and information's coming in where it wasn't before is a huge success for us."
The program is also good for victims' families, she says.
"With the cases being cold and resources being a little bit slim in places, that just their case being mentioned or featured in something like this is huge for them. It reminds them that their loved one isn't forgotten."

Los Angeles building inspectors on Wednesday ordered the developer of a controversial hilltop mansion in Bel-Air to demolish and remove all unapproved construction including concrete decks, retaining walls and other features that they say were completed in violation of a stop-work order.
He was pretty much caught red-handed, said Luke Zamperini, chief inspector for the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. He's got to either get permits for what he has done or demolish the illegal construction.
In September, building officials revoked the projects permits, effectively shutting down construction, after a resident who lives below contended that grading and other activity had destabilized the slope.
Since then, other neighbors of the project at 901 Strada Vecchia had reported several times to city officials that celebrity developer Mohamed Hadid was continuing construction on the 30,000-square-foot, multi-level house, in violation of the stop-work order.
Inspectors who visited the property on Monday noted a laundry list of violations, including the addition of wiring, cabinetry, a concrete slab in the driveway and steel-stud partitions in the garage to create office and storage space.
They also cited far more serious examples of unpermitted construction, including the addition of two levels of irregularly shaped concrete decks, an entire story below basement level and three large retaining walls. The inspectors also listed a dozen changes that had been made to the floor plan, including increases in the height of each floor of the main structure beyond the scope of approved plans.
The owner of the property is 901 Strada LLC. A company report lists as its executive James T. Zelloe, a Virginia attorney.
Benjamin Reznik, an attorney for 901 Strada, said construction completed after issuance of the stop-work order was done to protect the exposed house from rain, with the building and safety departments approval. He also said that inspectors approved the building of the basement and that his client would submit revised plans. He said other issues related to technical stuff that his client had agreed to do once the stop-work order was lifted.
Hadid, who avidly promotes himself on social media and has appeared on reality TV shows, is known for a lavish lifestyle and for building over-the-top houses for the extremely well-to-do.
He has 15 days to remove the unapproved retaining walls and other unpermitted work or to seek permits. He also must pay an inspection fee of $336.

Chris Gayle is not adverse to bowling spin, so it perhaps unsurprising that the batsman has tried his hands to get something to turn again - albeit if not on a cricket pitch.
The 35-year-old is currently in India ahead of this year's IPL tournament which starts on Wednesday.
And it appears the destructive batsman is enjoying himself before attempting to help Royal Challengers Bangalore be crowned IPL champions for the first time in their history.
Chris Gayle (left) uploaded an Instagram picture behind the DJ decks ahead of the IPL season on Tuesday
Gayle, pictured in 2012, will be hoping to winRoyal Challengers Bangalore's first-ever IPL crown this year
Accompanied with the caption: 'Current situation... Believe me, I'm on the work again... #USL #RCB,' Gayle posted a picture via his Instagram account on Tuesday of himself behind some DJ decks.
It's not the first time that Gayle has tried his hand musically.
Last month the West Indies opener posted 'I'm not leaving' alongside an Instagram video of himself singing along with an amused singer in Sydney after rejecting speculation that he will quit international cricket.

Rockwell Collins' large-format flight displays, inspired by the same display system found on Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes, have been selected by Denmark-based Star Air for its fleet of 11 Boeing 767-200BDSF cargo airplanes.
The new flight deck, a collaboration between Rockwell Collins and Boeing for the 757 and 767 aftermarket, brings a series of innovative technologies that dramatically enhance situational awareness, decrease maintenance costs and improve fuel efficiency. The flight deck retrofit solution received initial certification in 2014.
"Since first deliveries to our launch customer, we're seeing the momentum building for the 757/767 flight deck upgrade with domestic and international operators," said Steve Timm, vice president and general manager, Air Transport Systems for Rockwell Collins. "It significantly extends the life of these aircraft while adding new capabilities to meet future airspace requirements, and pilots will benefit from a much more engaging visual environment and intuitive interface."
Installation and subsequent European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification of Star Air's flight display retrofit will begin later this year.
"We selected the large-format display solution from Rockwell Collins for our fleet of 767-200 freighters because we are confident that the upgrade will provide full compliance not only with current, but also with future avionics requirements," said Carsten Hvidegaard Holm, vice president, Technical for Star Air A/S. "The commonality with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, 737 MAX and 777X was a key selling point for us during the decision process as we feel it will ensure future system support and updates. The large-format flight displays will also provide us with a significant weight savings, and it will have a positive effect on our dispatch reliability allowing us to serve our customers even better than today."
The 757/767 upgrade features three large-format 15.1-inch LCD displays that replace six cathode ray tube (CRT) displays and numerous analog instruments to provide operators with a number of benefits, including:
In addition, Rockwell Collins' Head-up Guidance System (HGS) is available for the Boeing 757/767 aftermarket, which further enhances situational awareness and provides more efficient operations through all phases of flight, including departures and approaches in low-visibility conditions, thunderstorm diversion, and quick, at-a-glance flight path monitoring.

It looks like Emily Colley thinks she's still On the Beach.
The stunning brunette, who appeared on MTV's Ex On the Beach, stripped to a very skimpy swimsuit for a DJ set in Ireland.
Geordie Shore star Gaz Beadle's former fling looked smoking hot as she span the records on the decks in Club V.
The 24-year-old stepped out from behind the DJ booth to reveal a tiny cut-out swimming costume.
We're not sure it's the most appropriate outfit for a nightclub, but Emily is rocking it.
Posing with her hands on her head, Emily flaunted her boobs in the plunging one-piece.
Cut-out side panels ensured there was as much flesh as possible on display.
And the high-cut black number did the job with showing off her enviably trim pins.
Emily completed her look with a pair of strappy black sandals.
Fresh from posing up a storm, the stunner then donned a giant pair of headphones and played hits for the crowds.
