Demolition work begins on 156 squatter houses

KOTA KINABALU: An eight-day demolition work on 156 squatter houses at Kg Lobou in Menggatal here commenced after a one-month grace period ended Friday.

It was learnt that the squatter settlement comprised foreigners, a majority with documents, and a few locals who turned the Housing and Town Development Board (LPPB)-owned land into their home over the past two years. Prior to the demolition works, an integrated operation led by the police was conducted on Sept 10 where those without documents were rounded up by the police before being sent to a temporary detention centre. City Hall Enforcement Director Abdul Mukti Muchlish said the demolition was a follow-up operation where illegal structures in the area are to be taken down, adding that they issued a seven-day eviction notice on Sept 11. It was learnt that 44 squatters appealed for a three-month grace period. However, they were only allowed a one-month grace period from Oct 14 following negotiations with the landowner, after which all illegal structures are to be demolished and cleared of squatters. No untoward incidents were reported on the first day of demolition work with many squatters seen cooperating by dismantling the structures themselves. "We do not encourage squatter settlements and have advised squatters to find proper accommodation instead of building their homes in such settlements," said Abdul Mukti. He urged those with information on squatter settlements to channel information to the City Hall Enforcement Hotline at 088-521700. To date, a total of 2,973 illegal structures have been demolished by City Hall since 2010.

Homeless residents demand well-placed relocation - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HEARTHLESS TREE.Residents of Barangay Subangdaku who recently lost their homes bring a Christmas tree to the Mandaue City Hall to demand from Mayor Jonas Cortes an ideal relocation site.(CONTRIBUTED FOTO/ALAN TANGCAWAN)

AFTER the tension-filled demolition of their makeshift huts, around 50 residents of a creekside settlement in Sitio Mahayag and Sitio Mahusay, Barangay Subangdaku marched to the Mandaue City Hall and aired their frustrations.

They threatened to camp out in the plaza in front of City Hall until Mayor Jonas Cortes assure them they can build their houses near their livelihood or given a proper relocation site or financial aid.

Speaking on behalf of the Barangay Subangdaku residents, lawyer Aaron Pedrosa of party-list Sanlakas said the residents were not given due process when their homes were demolished last June and last October.

He said notices sent by the City Legal Office only involved owners of dwellings within the three-meter easement of Mahiga Creek, but houses outside the easement had also been torn down.

There should be a separate notice for those living outside the three-meter easement, as well as a separate pre-demolition conference and other processes required before any demolition takes place, Pedrosa told reporters.

    Notices

City Legal Officer Giovanni Tianero, in a separate interview, denied that the notices he issued in 2011 and 2014 were only for residents living within the three-meter easement.

He showed reporters two notices, which ask residents living in danger zones in Sitio Mahayag and Sitio Mahusay to vacate the areas.

Demolition crews uncover Downtown Fresno tunnel - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --

A drizzly day didn't stop the demolition of the old Del Monte building. Nor did the discovery of a large opening on G Street leading under Tulare Street.

Kathy Omachi of Chinatown Revitalization Incorporated believed the entrance may provide proof an elaborate tunnel system existed.

"It proves that we're not crazy," said Omachi. "It proves that we're a determined group and that we have a valid story to tell and to preserve. It's extremely important for the Valley."

Omachi wanted to have the site documented and inspected. She's worried it will be quickly filled in.

"If we don't fight for our history then there's no one that's going to fight for our children's history and this one is so tangible," explained Omachi. "You can touch it, you can drive around it and that it exists. It's not just off of a page in a book. It's not a grainy photo. It actually exists."

Karana Hattersley-Drayton is the Historic Preservation Project manager for the city of Fresno. She said a Sanborn Insurance map dating back to 1919 documented how the tunnel was used.

Hattersley-Drayton said, "That was an old conveyer belt system, utility if you will, to move raisins from one side of the street to the other side underneath the street for the Pacific Seeded Raisin Company."

Elizabeth Jonasson of the High Speed Rail Authority said, "We are aware of the underground conveyance system located at the Del Monte demolition site and we have documented it during our archeological investigations."

But Omachi remained unconvinced. "This time we just want to document it and let people know that yes the area really is honeycombed by tunnels."

Demolition of Bradley International Airport's Terminal B To Impact Traffic - November 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WINDSOR LOCKS Traffic will be affected when demolition begins next month on Terminal B at Bradley International Airport, the Connecticut Airport Authority said.

The upper departure roadway after Terminal A and the Sheraton Hotel will be closed permanently. Traffic will be diverted to the lower level after the Sheraton Hotel.

The closing of that part of the roadway is necessary for the demolition of the existing viaduct roadway, the airport said. The right lane in the lower level arrivals roadway will be closed after Terminal A. Signs and lane markings will point out the new traffic pattern.

From Dec. 8 to Dec. 11, the entire upper roadway will be closed and all traffic will be diverted to the lower level from 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.

The demolition and road closures are anticipated to only cause minor delays, the airport said.

Kevin A. Dillon, the executive director of the airport authority, said in June that terminal was sparsely populated by the the Transportation Safety Administration and the state police, and both were moving out.

Demolition, redevelopment underway at Longmont's Butterball site - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The former Butterball plant at 150 Main St. is in the midst of demolition Wednesday. (Vince Winkel / Longmont Times-Call)

While a lot of the old Butterball plant near First Avenue and Main Street remains intact, city officials and project developers report that plans for the area are moving forward and there is tangible progress.

"We've started recycling the old equipment and materials," explained Brian Bair of 150 Main LLC, the developer of the property. He represents both the property owner and Niwot-based 150 Main. "The demolition has started and we are breaking down portions of the site."

Already, portions of the Butterball building are coming down, as walls have been removed and the insides are being either demolished or repurposed. Bair says the entire structure will be gone by the end of this year.

The developers are currently focused on the first of several phases, which is the redevelopment of 150 Main St. and the old plant.

"We're talking about Class A multi-family apartments, with some office and retail space," Bair said. "That's about 300 or more multi-family units and up to 12,000 square feet of new commercial space."

Bair says the goal is to have the new building in place by early summer 2015.

The hope is the project extends the downtown feel of Main Street further south.

"Does it have a downtown feel?" asked David Starnes, Longmont's Redevelopment & Revitalization manager. He thinks it will. "It should grow the downtown area. We're pretty excited about it."

That growth will equal more jobs, more housing, more retail and more tax revenue for Longmont.

Winchester House demolition: 'Cruncher' on site as work begins on Bracknell eye-sore - November 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Eagle-eyed Bracknell residents will have spotted a demolition machine moving in on Winchester House in Bracknell Town Centre as demolition gets underway.

Mark Gibson sent us photos of the crane arriving at the former home of 3M.

A source on site said: "The 'cruncher' is a 50m reach demolition machine fitted with a munching arm.

"As Winchester House is 54 metres high it is planned to have a four metre platform of building rubble for it to sit on."

The machine, a Hitachi EX1200 long reach, weighs approximately 108 metric tonnes and has a top travelling speed of 2.2mph.

777 Group, the company supplying the machine at Winchester House, have used 'the cruncher' on similar projects in Bournemouth and Gateshead as you can see in the video below.

The diverse machine can also be used for excavation and has seen use at quarries and dredging riverbeds.

At the end of September, The Bracknell Times' Jennie Slevin reported: "Hoardings closing off Bracknell s most notorious eyesore are expected to be put in place next week ahead of its demolition.
