RSA demolition 'a nightmare' - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    stuff.co.nz

EMOTIONAL ENDING: The Sumner-Redcliffs RSA building, which was destroyed in the February 2011 quake after a large boulder from a cliff face crashed through it, has been demolished.

The demolition of the Sumner-Redcliffs Returned and Services' Association (RSA) building is ''like a nightmare'' for its president Bev Salter.

The Wakefield Avenue site was destroyed in the February 2011 quake after a large boulder from a cliff face crashed through the building.

In 2011, a few hundred people commemorated Anzac Day for the last time at the red-stickered building.

Salter said she had been emotional all week knowing the demolition would soon take place.

''I knew it was going to happen, but it's a bit different watching it. It's like a nightmare.''

She said if the Sumner-Redcliffs RSA had a new ''home we could call our own'', then things would be easier.

On the day of the February quake, Ian Caldwell was securing rocks above the RSA building when the cliff broke away and he was buried beneath it.

A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokesman said the demolition was risky and remote-controlled excavators were being used for some of the work.

Demolition for Garretts ordered for Oct. 24 - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published on October 21, 2014

NEW GLASGOW The demolition order was scheduled for Sept. 30, but Garretts by the Bridge is still standing.

    JOHN BRANNEN THE NEWS

The sign Garretts by the Bridge has been removed from the building in downtown New Glasgow. Despite a demolition order scheduled for Sept. 30, New Glasgow Town council voted on Monday night to give a final extension to the demolition timeline until Oct. 24, when the building will come down.

The only part of the building removed so far is the iconic sign across the front of the building.

Thats sparked the ire of staff with the town of New Glasgow, which voted on Monday night to give a final extension to the demolition timeline until Oct. 24, when the building will come down.

I received a phone call from realtor representing Garretts who indicated that they were looking at the end of October for the demolition, said town CAO Lisa MacDonald. I said other arrangements would have to be sought because there are significant concerns around the stability of structure.

While the realtor indicated that the demolition contractor was unable to perform the task until the end of October, the towns solicitor went to the solicitor representing the property owner and indicated that the time line at the end of October was simply unacceptable.

New Glasgow council voted last May to give Eddie MacArthur until Sept. 1 to meet the requirements set by the fire inspector and town engineer or else the building would be demolished.

Throughout the discussion, town councillors stressed their concerns about the building, which has been deemed structurally unsafe as well as an eyesore

Alternate plan for demolition of Old Ledbetter Bridge piers moving forward - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is continuing to develop an alternate plan for demolition of the remaining in-water piers at the Old Ledbetter Bridge site.

When the last steel truss section over the Tennessee River main navigation channel was detonated on Oct. 1, damage was caused to the concrete structures.

KYTC says cracks left in the piers raised safety questions about the drilling process.

Mark Hutchins, Project Manager with C.J. Manhan Construction Company, said the piers had suffered horizontal cracking and extreme deflections.

In our experience, as well as in all that of our specialty (explosives) contractor, we have never witnessed pier deflections of the magnitude indicated , Hutchins said. We would not want to attempt to drill the piers to place explosives without providing some external means of ensuring stability. Given their location in the river, it is not clear how to accomplish this.

KYTC engineers and the company are continuing to work on options, but it may be several weeks before a plan is fully developed and approved.

Removing the river piers in a safe and environmentally sound manner is among several challenges that were a part of the demolition process from the beginning, KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer MikeMcGregor said. We continue to work with our contractor and the various federal and state agencies to develop a viable plan to remove the piers.

KYTC says the contractor has continued conventional demolition of the approach spans along the Livingston County end of the Old Ledbetter Bridge.

All steel is down and the contractor is digging around and pushing over the land-based piers.

Home where babies' bodies found demolished - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Onlookers cheered Tuesday as a four-man demolition crew started tearing down what some had dubbed a "House of Horrors" - the squalid Massachusetts home where the skeletal remains of three infants were found.

    See photos of the demolition

A backhoe started clawing at the outer walls after a 9 a.m. deadline passed without the home's owner contacting the town or seeking a court order to halt the demolition. Blackstone Town Administrator Daniel Keyes said all utilities were shut off and someone went through the building to make sure no one was inside before work began.

The town's fire department hosed down the debris and dust to contain the offensive odors still emanating from the home, which had been filled with dirty diapers, animal carcasses and infested with insects and rodents.

Blackstone's Board of Health ordered the demolition, which is expected to take two days.

Erika Murray, the woman who lived in the house with four children and her longtime boyfriend, is being held on $1 million bail on charges including fetal death concealment. She has pleaded not guilty.

Murray's lawyer Keith Halpern said last week that she appears to have mental health issues. He said Murray told him the dead infants were born starting about eight years ago and at least one was born alive and lived a few days before she found the child dead in a bassinet. The state medical examiner has not determined how old the babies were or how they died.

Murray's other four children, ranging in age from 6 months to 13 years, were removed from the house in August. Authorities found the infants' remains in a more thorough search a few weeks later.

"It's an end to a long drama here in town," Linda Konowitz said as the backhoe demolished the porch. "It's going to put a lot of people at rest."

She said the demolition wanted to see the home be demolished.
