Demolition ahead for North Aurora Activity Center - October 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORTH AURORA Village trustees at Mondays Committee of the Whole meeting moved ahead with the demolition of the North Aurora Activity Center.

Trustees in May decided the North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway was not worth saving. The Activity Center has been closed since March 12 because of structural damage.

Kluber Architects and Engineers presented three different options for demolition. After debating the issue, trustees opted Monday for the cheapest option, which would involve removing the building for an estimated $475,773. The east and south parking lots would remain.

The cost includes asbestos abatement, removal of an underground fuel storage tank, removal of the dirt/sand playground on the south end of the property and keeping the parking area on the north end of the site.

A portion of the funding would come from the insurance money received for the villages property loss $68,763 as well as funds from the closeout of the North Aurora Activity Center fund $92,0002. Other funds would come from reserves in the villages capital projects fund.

As proposed, the North Aurora Activity Center would be demolished by February or March.

Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers in a report had determined there are three sections of the building where the roof joists have failed because they were stressed beyond their maximum designed capacities.

According to the report, the damage to the joists was caused by a combination of the framing not being properly designed for dead and live loads [the building was constructed in the 1930s] and the high snowfall experienced this past season where cold temperatures did not allow for normal periodic melting, Village Administrator Steve Bosco had said.

Adding supports to all of the joists in the affected areas as recommended by Kluber was estimated to cost $219,862, of which the villages insurance company would provide $103,146 in loss contribution.

The villages total out-of-pocket costs would be about $116,715, Bosco said.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Work on Knoxville's Fort Dickerson Park is set to continue this week with the demolition of a building near the park's entrance.

Abatement of the G & R Automotive Building was set to begin as soon as Monday. Once that is complete and a demolition permit is approved, demolition will begin.

The city took ownership of the property from the Aslan Foundation on July 31. City officials say the demolition will allow more landscaping at the new Fort Dickerson Park entrance.

Demolition starts to make way for Pershore College transformation - October 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEMOLITION machines began knocking down buildings at Pershore college today (Monday, Oct 6) as they make way for a state of the art 5.8 million redevelopment.

A crowd gathered as the first of the buildings was brought to the ground in what was described as a "fantastic milestone" for the college.

When it is finished the 5.8m scheme will see the college transformed with a new contemporary glass building housing a science and technology centre, collections house, teaching rooms and project spaces and extensive research and development facilities.

The new building, which will replace old and now unused facilities, will also provide a stunning new reception area for the college and a viewing gallery over the collections house below.

The cash injection for the project came from a successful bid for millions of pounds worth of funding from the Skills Funding Agency to undertake the work.

Tamsin Jones, principal at Pershore College, said: "This is a fantastic milestone for us. Seeing the old buildings being knocked down marks the end of an era, but our students and staff are all so excited about the new redevelopment which is going to replace them."

Pershore College is well know in its field offering a range of courses in horticulture, floristry, landscaping, arboriculture, food and drink, conservation, animal welfare and management, veterinary nursing and motor vehicle maintenance. Training includes further and higher education, work-based learning and short courses.

The principal added: "This stunning new building will ensure we remain at the forefront of the horticulture industry and our students will be able to learn using the latest technology, providing them with a competitive advantage when they begin their careers in the industry.

"It was great to welcome our local partners to the demolition today to help us celebrate this milestone as they have been so supportive throughout the process."

The new developments are due to be completed by September next year but current college activities and facilities for students will be unaffected during the works.

Battersea Owners Seek $790,000 for Studio Apartments - October 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than 500 homes at Londons Battersea Power Station, designed by Gehry Partners LLP and Foster & Partners, will be offered for sale this month. Prices start at 495,000 pounds ($790,000) for a studio apartment.

Battersea Power Station Development Co., owned by Malaysian companies including SP Setia Bhd. and Sime Darby Bhd., will eventually build more than 1,300 homes designed by the architects close to the defunct power plant, where part of The Dark Knight movie was filmed. Two-bedroom apartments in the new development phase are priced from 1.2 million pounds and four-bedroom homes will cost at least 3.2 million pounds.

The owners of the site on the River Thames are trying to turn the district into a prime address. London home values fell month-on-month for the first time in two years in September and further modest declines are likely as demand for housing slows, according to researcher Hometrack Ltd.

This is an opportunity to be right above Londons newest pedestrianized high street and at the impressive gateway to the power station, Rob Tincknell, chief executive officer of the developer, said in a statement. The designs from Foster & Partners and Gehry Partners are unique.
