Demolition Derby: A Love Story - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Nothing about me says demolition derby.

I dont pump my own gas. Ive never changed a tire. Ive never even filled up the wiper fluid in my own car. I drive a white station wagon that was made in Germany. I drink white wine. I collect seaglass. I dont just listen to NPR, I send them money. I thought for a brief amount of time that NASCAR was a brand of cigarettes.

But the demolition derby at New Hampshires Hopkinton State Fair is the highlight of my year. Its my new Christmas.

    Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

The first time I went, I expected to enjoy it, in the way its amusing for people to step outside their comfort zone and enjoy something they have no intention of doing again.

Thats not what happened. I loved it. The national anthem. The part where a car jumped the fence. The music that played during intermissions, while forklifts and bulldozers cleared demolished cars from the arena.

    Demolition derby, you complete me.

    I was hooked.

I have a vague memory of my very first derby. I was probably 10 or so. It was in Maine, where I spent most summers growing up. I dont remember much, beyond a glimmer of excitement and a ton of smoke.

My dad remembers more. It was the Wiscasset Speedway, he told me.

Demolition begins on old Thriftway building in Westwood in Denver - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Folks gathered Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the OK Thriftway builiding in the Westwood neighborhood in Denver. (Joe Vaccarelli, Your Hub)

Demolition of the OK Thriftway, an old blighted building in Denver's Westwood neighborhood, began Wednesday in the presence of city representatives, Denver police and a few members of the neighborhood.

Folks cheered as several officials ceremoniously pulled down the sign of the building at 4401 Morrison Road. The building has been vacant since 2008 and was recently bought by the Urban Land Conservancy.

"This is a major win for us," said Paul Washington, executive director of the city's Office of Economic Development, during a ceremony before the demolition.

What will become of the property hasn't been decided, but Washington said it has potential to be a commercial and core hub for the community.

The building became a hotspot for crime and was used by homeless people. A suicide and an attempted sexual assault were reported on the property in the past year.

Denver City Councilman Paul Lopez recounted for the audience the times he spent there as a child, buying snacks. But, he noted, that was more than 30 years ago and the building has since become a problem for the neighborhood.

"We need to be able to keep this property safe," he said.

Demolition delayed for former Miami Herald building - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MIAMI -

It's been just over a year since the Miami Herald moved out of its old building along Biscayne Bay. The building was sold to the Genting Group, yet there is still a holdup in its demolition.

Workers took months to gut the building's interior because of tedious asbestos removal, and now frayed electrical wires that dangle from the crumpled concrete make the building a waterfront eyesore.

A Miami Herald photographer captured the explosion that marked the start of demolition last April, which sent plumes of dust billowing across Biscayne Bay. And that dust sparked alarm at City Hall.

"I don't think that they had started to go about the process properly, and I don't think they had started demolishing effectively, and it created a lot of dust," said Commissioner Marc Sarnoff.

Sarnoff told Local 10 News the city's building department put a temporary halt to the contractor's plan because of concerns about dust and structural issues.

"I don't think it is Genting taking its time," said Sarnoff. "I think it is a much tougher building to take down than anyone really imagined."

Genting once had plans to build a luxury destination casino resort, but state lawmakers haven't allowed the kind of gambling to make that happen. Despite intense lobbying, a scaled-down version is now in the works, which may involve soccer superstar David Beckham.

"I've invited Beckham to have a discussion with them because if you wanted to create a downtown stadium, that is a place where you can accomplish that," said Sarnoff.

Sarnoff said the plan to unite the Genting Group with Beckham's proposed Major League Soccer stadium has been in the works for two months and that Beckham has met with Genting executives at least twice in New York.

Police, farmers clash as demolition resumes - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO Farmers' woes persist as they attempt to stop the resumption of the demolition operations at a 130-hectare farmland in Barangay Maimpis here.

Clashes erupted between the Maimpis farmers and the Pampanga Police Provincial Office (PPO) personnel during the demolition of the disputed land with enraged farmers blocking the demolition equipment and the police attempting to suppress the disorder.

The said demolition started last July 2014, which was followed by a series of shooting incidents that injured several farmers here.

Before the recommencement of the writ of demolition, a standoff took place between the farmers, demolition team, police, and the security guards of Aaron Eagle Security and Investigation Agency Inc., which replaced the Great Star Security Services Inc.

Arriving in the demolition site in Maimpis accompanied by at least 150 police, the demolition workers were met with outrage from the farmers.

It took several hours before the onset of the backhoes, bulldozers, and graders because of the different delaying tactics conducted by the farmers.

"We will fight for our rights as farmers," said farmer Joner Quiambao who lay down near a backhoe in an attempt to stop it from moving forward.

Meanwhile, Virginia Manalo presented the police a handkerchief with an image of Jesus Christ. Manalo believed that God can help them withstand the challenges confronting them.

"Only God above knows what will happen to us. Please save us! God is our last hope against these people who are throwing us away. We have no place to go!" said Manalo.
