Do You Really Need Fireworks at a Controlled Demolition? - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear demolition companies of America: You get to implode whole buildings at a time, and we love it. The implosion and controlled drop is more than enough to keep most people interested in your work.

Apparently the people of Albany, New York are a tougher crowd than the rest of us, however, because a demo crew there decided to add a fireworks display when they knocked down the Wellington Hotel Annex. The Saturday demolition was needed to clear the way for a $66.5 million redevelopment project, according to the Albany Business Review.

Fireworks are fun, dont get me wrong, but they sort of pale in comparison the the 100 pounds of dynamite used to knock over an entire 11-story building. Its like having a Kit Kat before your birthday cake.

Council halts CitiCenter demolition - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUSPENSION.Demolition at CitiCenter in Barangay Kamagayan, Cebu City may be suspended for 20 days if Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama will not prevent the implementation of the order approved by the city council.(Sun.Star Foto/USJ-R Mass Comm Intern Samie Gonzaga)

THE Cebu City Council yesterday ordered a 20-day suspension of the demolition at the CitiCenter Complex in Barangay Kamagayan.

But Mayor Michael Rama is not inclined to heed the resolution of the council sponsored by Councilor Sisinio Andales.

That (resolution) is just a request; it can be granted or not. As early as 2010, there was already a plan to bring in a new dimension in Kamagayan, Rama said in his regular press conference yesterday.

Rama then presented his administrations plan for the CitiCenter.

It was Atty. Benjamin Militar, representing the 200 families living in the complex, who wrote a letter to Rama asking for the suspension.

Militar appeared before the council yesterday to make the same plea.

Councilor Alvin Dizon noted that the demolition might have some violations from City Ordinance (CO) 2356, which was passed in July 30, 2013, which he authored.

For one, there should be a consultation between the City and the informal settlers before the demolition.

Planning committee passes demolition bill - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A proposed stay of demolition ordinance for historically designated structures in Charleston is on the way to City Council. Councils planning committee passed the bill Monday evening.

The bill, first introduced to the Strong Neighborhoods Task Force in May, would create three levels of historic designations for buildings in districts.

The first is a badge of honor that recognizes a building or neighborhoods historical significance. The second allows for demolition of such buildings to be delayed by 90 days while community members and the property owners figure out an alternative to tearing a building down.

Some people dont realize some of the resources that are available out there for these historic properties or maybe an adaptive reuse option, said planning director Dan Vriendt. Maybe theyre just not familiar with the zoning ordinance and different things weve added to the zoning ordinance for flexibility in adaptive reuse.

The Historic Landmarks Commission, which is charged with approving or denying nominations and stays of demolition, could waive the 90-day delay if a structure is found beyond repair.

The third level would allow for a demolition delay and require a design review of historically significant properties or districts.

There are six historic districts in the city of Charleston--the Luna Park, Edgewood, Elk City, Downtown, Grosscup and the East End historic districts. Only the East End historic district has design review.

Nothing in the bill stops a buildings eventual demolition. The ordinance only provides a cooling off period for the community and property owners, Vriendt said.

The ordinance would only apply to buildings and districts that are already listed on local and federal historic registers. A group or individual couldnt block demolition of a building that wasnt listed by nominating it after a demolition permit is applied for.

Its a pretty laborious process to get something designated as a local or historic property. Youre not just going to read about potential demolition in the newspaper and run out and try to get this rammed through, Vriendt said.

Demolition of shops sparks row - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Hindu Municipal authorities pull down unauthorised shops in Amadalavalasa market on Tuesday. Photo: Basheer

Demolition of unauthorised shops in Amadalavalasa market here sparked a row on Tuesday, with the traders vehemently opposing the drive initiated by the authorities, alleging that they were not given scope for shifting their shops to other place.

The drive which began on Monday midnight amid tight police security continued till Tuesday evening. As many as 42 shops were located in Sri Poa Palamma Tali market, near the city railway station. It is learnt that the municipal authorities promised the owners to construct shops in other area, but refused to give a written assurance as the traders did not have rights over the land.

Petty traders sought permission for relocating of shops in the e-Seva complex till the construction of permanent shops was completed. Former Minister Tammineni Sitaram and other YSR Congress leaders vehemently opposed the demolition of shops in the midnight, saying that municipal authorities had misled the people that they were negotiating with the traders for an amicable solution.

Mr. Sitaram alleged that MLA Kuna Ravikumar and TDP leaders were responsible for the removal of the structures and sought that the shops were reconstructed at the earliest. YSRC leaders Chiranjeevi Nag, Dumpala Shyamalarao,G.V. AppalaNaidu and others were taken into custody on the charge that they had violated the Section 144 imposed in the area. A few traders have decided to move court, saying that they had rights over the land since they had been running business in the same locality for the last 30 years.
