Lawn mowers added to demolition derby - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Franklin County Fair By KEVIN CORVO Wednesday July 16, 2014 9:37 AM

Demolition derbies are a tradition at the Franklin County Fair, but this year, the fair is showcasing a first-of-its-kind, last-driver-standing competition.

John Deere and International Harvester machines will run in the same show as those mammoth Buicks and Fords.

A lawn mower class will be included in this year's demolition derby beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hilliard.

The demolition derby has traditionally been the last event on the final day of the eight-day fair and also one its largest draws, usually attracting drivers and fans from as far as 75 miles away.

This year's lawn mower derby is believed to be the first ever in Franklin County, said Tim Clark, a promoter for London-based Smash-It Demolition Derbies.

Clark said the company began staging lawn mower competitions seven years ago and this year has about 35 shows scheduled, most at county fairs in Ohio.

"Some of our younger (auto) drivers had the idea to do it and it grew from there," Clark said.

There was a learning curve for the event, he said, and rules are different in the lawn mower class than for the automobiles.

One primary difference is that the lawn mowers have no batteries.

Longmont's Twin Peaks Mall demolition set to begin August 1 - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Charity auction prizes include helicopter ride, a chance to operate the 100-ton excavator

Twenty-nine years to the month that dignitaries and fanfare celebrated the opening of Longmont's Twin Peaks Mall, the walls will come tumbling down.

    Twin Peaks Mall demolition event

    When: 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1

Where: Northwest corner of the property off Bent Way

Who: NewMark Merrill representatives, city officials, I Have a Dream Foundation representatives

    More info: http://villageatthepeaks.com

NewMark Merrill Mountain States, owners of the mall, have announced that August 1 will be Day One of the mall's demolition. The 100-ton excavator and claw will have a target as it proceeds to tear into the building: a giant Gamma Acosta mural being painted on the former Sears building, on the northwest corner of the mall.

"We've got the old (Twin Peaks Mall) logo going up, so it's representative of the old mall going away," said Luke McFetridge, regional property manager for NewMark Merrill.

McFetridge said his connection with Acosta grew out of conversations he had been having with Joanne Kirves, executive director of Longmont Council for the Arts. He said the two have been talking about some ideas for how Village at the Peaks, the new center that NewMark Merrill is building on the mall property, might be able to support the local artists' community in Longmont.

Demolition under way in remodel of ISUs historic Normal Hall - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TERRE HAUTE The sounds of heavy equipment, impact drills and even a large wrecking ball are evidence of a renovation under way at Normal Hall, Indiana State Universitys oldest academic building.

Demolition is on a structure added to the historic building in the 1950s for book storage.

It only had seven-foot ceilings, so it could only be used for storage. It is well built, with steel frame and concrete, and there is lots of reinforcing steel in the concrete, so it is a difficult demolition, but they are making good progress on it, said Bryan Duncan, ISUs director of capital planning and improvements.

A wrecking ball is being used to break through the reinforced concrete flooring.

Demolition work is about 30 percent completed, Duncan said.

Work includes some selective demolition of interior walls on the original Normal Hall, dedicated in 1910. That work is for the placement of new electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems, Duncan said.

Separate piles of steel beams, concrete and reinforcing bar can be seen on the site next to the Richard G. Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts. Those materials will be recycled as part of the bid from Bloomington-based Weddle Brothers Building Group, the general contractor on the project, Duncan said.

Work started in May on the $16 million renovation project, scheduled to be completed in July 2015.

A glass-enclosed atrium will replace the 1950s section, as the new Normal Hall will house the University College and Center for Student Success, which is to provide freshmen and other students with primary instruction, tutoring and advising.

While the building has been primarily used for storage or office space, ISU has maintained the building, including replacing windows and its roof within the last 15 years, Duncan said.
