There was some excitement in recent days among history buffs whenearthmovers uncovered what could be the basement of the former Los Angeles Times Building at the northeast corner of Broadway and 1st Street.

Crews are demolishing structures at the site to extend Grand Park.

Some disappointment then ensued -- at least in the L.A. Times newsroom -- when partial demolition revealed a multilevel structure. Could this just be another old underground parking garage? One such structure already had been pulverized for the park extension.

But a find by Jaye Steinbrick, senior director of information services for the L.A. Law Library, which is across the street from the site, gives new life to the original theory.

It turns out the old Times building extended for three floors underground. Thus, the structure still could be part of the old newspaper headquarters.

The floorplan details come via a 1933 appeals court ruling in City of Los Angeles vs. Klinker. (Klinkers identity is not made clear in the ruling). The case concerns the citys successful effort to seize the property through eminent domain. The city intended to pay The Times about $1 million, but The Times wanted more and sued to get it.

A lower court sided with the city; the higher court with The Times.

As background, the ruling includes a description.

The building consists of three stories underground and five stories above ground and is designed to carry two extra stories, a panel of judges wrote. There also was a northerly annex thereto constructed in 1921, and four so-called secondary buildings located on the north side of First Street.

The Times wanted more money because of its improvements to the property, which included built-in printing presses.

MANILA Sarah Jane, 17, a third year high school student at Sta. Mercedes National High School in Patungan village, Maragondon, Cavite felt anxious when she heard the news that their school will be demolished. She said she has only one more year to go before she graduates from high school.

Ludy Dela Cruz, 44, said all her six children have studied in the said school, two of whom have already graduated. Having a school near our residence is very convenient. I dont have to spend for their transportation because they only walk to school. Even if they dont have snacks they could eat at home after school.

However, the students and their parents were told by officials of the Department of Education (DepEd)Region IV-A that the school will be demolished. We were told that after July, the school will be transferred to Maragondon town proper, which is two hours away from Patungan, Dela Cruz said in an interview with Bulatlat.com.

There are two schools in Patungan village, the Sta. Mercedes Elementary School and the Sta. Mercedes National High School. According to Arnold Evangelista, executive director of the Batangas Integrated Human Rights Alliance (BIHRA), both schools are to be demolished to give way to the projects of the Manila South Coast Development Corporation of business tycoon Henry Sy and Fil Estate. About 600 students will be affected if the schools will be demolished.

If they will demolish these two schools, where will we send our children to study? said Susana Agner, secretary general of Save Patungan Now!

These are the only schools in our community, which also serve adjacent communities. These schools have been here for decades already. In fact, we and our ancestors were educated here. This planned demolition will just worsen the inaccessibility of basic education to the people of Patungan and nearby communities, Agner added. Land conversion

In 1994, the entire Hacienda Looc including the 5,218 hectares that was already awarded to the farmers under the governments agrarian reform program was sold to the Manila Southcoast Development Corp (MSDC). Bulatlat.com earlier reported that MSDC has been developing 5,800 hectares of Hacienda Looc into the Hamilo Coast project that includes the Pico De Loro Beach and Country Club and the Pico De Loro Residential Condominiums. It aims to develop 13 natural coves, 25 kilometers of pristine beachfront; forests, mountains, limestone cliffs, and rock formations. Since 2004, SM Land has been building structures along the coastal areas, converting farmlands and displacing farmers and fishermen of Hacienda Looc.

Two schools in Patungan, Cavite set to be demolished to give way to resorts

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Demolition of nine buildings that were part of the state's Lakeshore Mental Health Institute campus in Knoxville is slated to begin July 7.

A spokesperson for the City of Knoxville says crews from NEO Corp. will raze nine surplus buildings over the course of the next nine months.

As part of the project, the city will begin renovating the historic Lakeshore Administration Building. The project will cost $1.1 million and restore 14-thousand square feet of space.

All combined, the city is expected to spend about $5.2 million this year on infrastructure, demolition and other improvements at Lakeshore Park.

A spokesperson says Knoxville hopes demolition will remove unsafe buildings often used by vagrants and trespassers as well as bring aesthetic improvements to the park.

Five former state-owned buildings will remain at Lakeshore Park: Two cottages, the Administration Building, the chapel and a central services warehouse.

To be razed, in this order, will be the upholstery building, smoke stack, laundry building, Waterside Building, Department of Health Building, Chota Building, Village Mall, Baker Building, Keller Building, and the boilerhouse.

This is a huge step in transitioning the park to be an even greater community asset, said David Brace, the Citys Public Service Director, whose crews maintain City park properties.
