By Crystal Price EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso real estate development company has filed demolition permits with the City of El Paso to tear down a city block of historic buildings near San Antonio and Mesa in Downtown El Paso.

River Oaks Properties plans to demolish the entire city block between 212 and 220 E. San Antonio St. in Downtown El Paso.

This demolition permit application is in addition to the already accepted permit to destroy 109 S. Mesa St.

KFOX 14 reached out to River Oaks Properties for comment about what will be put in place of the historic buildings. However, no one returned our calls.

The announcement has some long-time El Pasoans upset.

"It was nice coming downtown," said Guadalupe Crook, a resident of Central El Paso. "I can remember when all the stores were open. It's unreal what they're doing."

Some El Pasoans KFOX 14 talked to said filling the space with something new could be a good thing.

"It's a good idea to make parking lots and something else to help downtown to look better," said Javier Puentes, a resident of downtown El Paso.

The Texas Trost Society said the planned demolition will destroy the historic Downtown El Paso core in staggering proportions.

"We were all outraged," said Malissa Arras, president of the Texas Trost Society.

Newmanstown >> A longtime Newmanstown landmark is slated for demolition, and the Millcreek Township supervisors couldn't be happier.

Demolition will begin next week on the former East End Pub.

The pub, for several years a popular bar and dining establishment, had fallen on hard times and was eventually abandoned. Local businessman Jack Keener bought the property with plans to tear it down and build townhouses in its stead. That was more than a year ago.

Because of the building's precarious condition and its location in the center of town along Main Street, the supervisors wanted the pub razed before anyone got hurt from falling bricks or lumber.

"It is in such disarray," said township Chairman Donald Leibig. "At the back part of the pub, where the dining area had been, the roof had collapsed some time ago. We were concerned about someone getting hurt, and the township's liability."

Leibig said he and township solicitor John Enck had toured the building about three years ago to check the condition then, and were appalled at what they found.

At the time, the pub had a few second-floor residents who were renting rooms. The stairs to the second floor were cracked and dilapidated and barely negotiable, Leibig said. In the attic, large sheets of plastic covered the floor, which was covered in buckets to collect rainwater, Leibig recalled.

No one currently lives in the building.
