OAKLAND (CBS SF) Caltrans officials said on Monday that work will begin soon on a key part of the demolition of the 77-year-old original east span of the Bay Bridge.
Demolition work began last September after the new eastern span was opened to traffic and wont be completed for another three to five years.
Caltrans spokesman Andrew Gordon said that workers will soon start cutting and separating the cantilever section at the middle of the old span.
Once the cantilever is separated at its center, the contractor will begin removing steel beams, Gordon said.
The spans two 412-foot-long cantilever arms are connected by a 576-foot-long suspended span and Caltrans originally planned to take down one arm at a time, he said.
But Gordon said Caltrans now plans to take both arms down at the same time in order to save time so that the demolition work can get back on schedule.
He said it will cost an extra $12.67 million to hire more workers to work on both sections at the same time but Caltrans hopes that that money could be recouped in the long term by shortening the schedule for the demolition work.
Caltrans chief bridge engineer Brian Maroney said that in a month people will notice a gap in the cantilever section because some panels will be gone.

Tampa, FL /PRNewswire/ - MagneGas Corporation ("MagneGas" or the "Company") (NASDAQ: MNGA), the developer of a technology that converts liquid waste into hydrogen-based fuels announced today that it is providing four demolition projects with MagneGas fuel for their torch cutting. These projects are sourced through existing MagneGas distributors Blue Water Industrial of Michigan and AWISCO Corp of New York. MagneGas fuel will be used in the demolition of a bridge in Washington, DC, automobile manufacturing facilities in Ohio and Michigan and a power plant in New York.
"We are very pleased to be the preferred fuel for cutting on these demolition jobs," stated Executive Vice President of Sales,Terry Vernille. "With the help of two major distributors, Blue Water Industrial and AWISCO Corp, we have the capability of providing our fuel for these key projects. As word continues spreading in the demolition industry about our superior cutting fuel we expect an increased demand around the country."
"Since bringing MagneGas to AWISCO we have gained positive traction in the market," stated Victor Furhman Vice President of Sales and Marketing for AWISCO Corp, "Having the ability to supply a better alternative metal cutting fuel in the market for customers is an added benefit for AWISCO. This customer in New York was already a customer of MagneGas in Florida so it was an easy transition switching them over from acetylene."

"As word continues to get out with the improved production and speed of cut we expect the demand for MagneGas to continue upwards."

MagneGas Fuel Selected For Four Demolition Projects
OAKLAND -- Caltrans says it will put the $300 million demolition of the old Bay Bridge east span back on schedule by paying $12.7 million for extra labor and equipment.
The three- to five-year-long demolition project fell several months behind schedule out the starting gate when Caltrans reallocated labor and resources to open the $6.4 billion new east span as soon as possible. It opened Sept. 2 after years of delays and cost overruns.
Caltrans said Monday it will regain the lost time by paying the contractor extra to simultaneously tear down both halves of the cantilever section of the bridge after crews cut it in half in the next three or four weeks. The 1,400-foot-long cantilever section is about a quarter-mile east of Yerba Buena Island and has the tallest steel frames on the east side of the island.
"This will put the demolition project back on schedule," Caltrans spokesman Andrew Gordon said Monday in a media briefing and tour of the demolition site.
The gap between the two bridge sections eventually will become a dramatic piece of history and photo opportunity, said Brian Maroney, a Caltrans engineer.
However, the gap will start out too small to even be noticed by the tens of thousands of motorists whizzing by on the new Bay Bridge.
"On the new bridge, you will miss it," Maroney said. "By summer, when you have 500 feet (in the gap,) you will won't be able to miss it. People will tell their grandchildren that this is what they saw."
The demolition by a joint venture of California Engineering Contractors/Silverado Contractors is preparing for the big milestone starting late this month. Crews with torches will cut the cantilever section in half after using hydraulic jacks to brace the two sections so they don't fall into the bay.
Gordon said Caltrans expects to recoup the extra $12.7 million over time because the time saved will open the door to finish other demolition work early to avoid delays imposed during sensitive times for bird nesting and fish and wildlife movement
"We spend money now to save money later," Gordon said.

Caltrans to pay $12.7 million extra to put Bay Bridge demolition back on schedule
THE Cebu City Legal Office yesterday filed before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 6 an urgent motion to suspend the demolition of structures of 157 families in Sitio San Miguel, Barangay Apas and to comply with provisions of Republic Act (RA) 7279, or the Urban Development and Housing Act.
Some 40 houses have been torn down since the demolition started last March 4, said Apas Barangay Captain Ramil Ayuman.
In a copy of the motion, the legal office headed by Atty. Gerone Castillo said RA 7279 provides that the local government unit and the National Housing Authority shall provide adequate relocation to those affected by the demolition.
But the City has yet to set aside a relocation site for the affected families, the legal office said.
Also, the law states that the relocation site should be provided within 45 days from service of notice of final judgment by the court.
Notice not received
The finality of the notice of judgment, the legal office said, refers to a judgment that is no longer appealable and must also be executed since the period for appeal has elapsed without a party having filed an appeal.
This is provided for in the case of Presidential Commission on Good Governance vs. Sandiganbayan.
In the instant case, however, the City did not receive any such notice of final judgment from this honorable court. The City can only deduce that its failure to receive such final notice was due to the fact that the Sept. 30, 2013 judgment of this court is still on appeal and therefore cannot, by any standard, be considered as final, the legal office said.
Aside from this, the legal office said there is a need to suspend the demolition since there are serious issues surrounding the issuance and implementation of the demolition.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. -
The Southwest Virginia Town of Big Stone Gap had two major downtown fires in the last six months. The latest fire destroyed two buildings that housed an automobile parts store.
This follows a fire in September that gutted an apartment building, which has since been torn down. The latest fire will result in more demolition downtown.
Just a skeleton remains of an old historic building in downtown Big Stone Gap after a major fire destroyed it on March 3. It once housed a NAPA Auto Parts store. Click here to view photos from the scene.
Nearly a month later, crews plan to tear it down. "They're scheduling the building for demolition this week. We're going to have a meeting tomorrow to discuss the process. That's the first thing you've got to remember, the building is scheduled for demolition. We don't know if the owner has any plans after the building is demolished," town manager Pat Murphy says.
It took fire fighters two days to put out the flames after it rekindled. It didn't affect the business right next door, but there were some anxious moments when it rekindled and they had to be evacuated. "By the time we got across the street, there were flames going probably 30 feet in the air. That really scared me, because the fire trucks weren't here. I actually saw that fire and that's what scared me," Freda Bishop, owner of Freda's Magic Mirror, said.
With the demolition of this building and another one just down the street following a fire last September, it will leave two empty spots in downtown Big Stone Gap.
"It's a concern in the downtown area, because you certainly don't want to lose these old historic buildings. They do have a character of their own, and they're hard to replace," Murphy said.
Investigators still have not determined what caused the two fires.
