Manila, Philippines The Liberal Party (LP) yesterday brushed off the attempts to link party stalwarts President Benigno S. Aquino III and Senate President Franklin Drilon to suspected pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles as an obvious demolition job.
LP Secretary-General Mel Senen Sarmiento said that linking Aquino and Drilon to the supposed multi-billion pork scam mastermind defies logic and is an act of desperation to undermine the governments effort in resolving the mind-boggling corruption issue.
They should not forget that it is this administration which is now moving heaven and earth to get into the bottom of these shocking stories of corruption involving the abuse and misuse of pork barrel funds, Sarmiento said.
The Samar congressman likewise reminded their critics it was the current administration that finally decided to abolish the pork barrel once and for all, although the operational word abolish would be subjected to debate for Minority members.
The objective is to turn this P10-billion Napoles pork barrel scam from being a corruption issue to a political case by diverting the attention of the public from the real culprits who misused the pork barrel system and pocketed millions and millions of public funds. What they dont realize is that this issue is now above and beyond politics, said Sarmiento.
This investigation into the PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Fund) scam would have not become possible without the Presidents support, he added.
Demolition Job
The solon called the moves to associate Aquino and Drilon two of the three most powerful officials of the country in the pork barrel mess based on pictures that went viral over the Internet as nothing but a demolition job.
Sarmiento said that photographs merely showing President Aquino and Drilon in the company of members of the Napoles family does not mean anything especially at this day and age when almost everyone has mobile phones that are also equipped with cameras.

The demolition of the Glenside-Weldon School has been a frequent topic of discussion at several of the board meetings in the last year, and the Aug. 27 meeting was no exception.
The board approved the future demolition of the building in June, transferring $2 million from the general fund balance to the capital projects fund to cover the costs of the project, which was factored into the 2013-14 budget.
At previous meetings, the board explained they will keep and maintain the site until the construction of a new school building is needed.
We have grown by 300 students in the last three years, at the rate of about 100 students a year, so there is a significant possibility that we will need to build an additional elementary school in the future, said board President Raymond McGarry June 11. I think we are doing the prudent thing and whats in the best interest for the community.
Facilities Supervisor Stephen Saile presented a timeline for the demolition of the building.
According to Saile, the board began advertising the closure of the school Sept. 3 and will hold a public hearing regarding the pending closure Sept. 18. From the end of the year until January 2014, plans and specifications for the demolition and site design will be made and reviewed by the Montgomery County Planning Conservation District and Abington Township Planning and Code Enforcement.
The board is scheduled to take action regarding the closure of the school Jan. 14, and the demolition will be advertised and go to bid late January into February. Contractual awards are scheduled for allocation in March, and the demolition is scheduled to begin in April. Project completion and project closeout is scheduled for September and October 2014.
The demolition of the building will occur in four phases, Saile explained. Phase one will occur between April and May and entail the preliminary demolition of the building and asbestos abatement in the power house. Between May and June asbestos abatement will occur within the building and site demolition and clearing will commence. The demolition of the school building will take place in phase three from July to August, and the final phase of the project will occur in September and entail the construction of the new athletic field and site restoration.
Saile also explained that it is more cost effective for the district to demolish the building than to renovate it. Projections for 2014 show it will cost the district an estimated $29.4 million to renovate Glenside-Weldon and $26.2 million to demolish the building and create a new one. Continued...

Central Recycling Services turns construction and demolition debris into money at a bustling facility along Anchorage's Ship Creek.
The company made more than $3.5 million last year selling steel and crushed asphalt, concrete and glass to Seattle and Alaska markets.
Now, short on space and chafing at $60-per-ton municipal landfill fees, Central Recycling hopes to build two of its own fills for the shredded debris it can't sell -- 8,000 tons a year and rising.
The company has proposed two, 30-year debris disposal sites in Chugiak and Palmer.
As recycling supporters hail the proposed monofills, neighbors are pushing back, worried about the possibility for fouled drinking water wells and decreased property values.
Unlike conventional landfills, the debris fills are lightly regulated by the state with no requirements for underground liners or wells to monitor water quality. The absence of clear regulations spooks nearby residents. It also breeds unpredictable permit decisions.
Central's proposed debris dumps conform to Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation standards. Anchorage planners are recommending approval for the Chugiak site. But the Matanuska-Susitna Borough rejected the company's design standards for Palmer.
Central plans to install monitoring wells, co-owner Shane Durand said. But the public doesn't see that in the paperwork because the state application didn't require it.
"So we got hit for not having a monitoring plan," Durand said.
Opponents of the dumps see it differently. They say operators like Central -- and current or future debris dumpers -- are taking advantage of Alaska's lax laws.
