Morgan County Fair officials want to bring more excitement to the annual summertime event.
To help this year with one of the fairs big attractions, fair organizers brought in Ramer Race Promotions of Mendota to provide some expert help in arranging a demolition derby.
We provide a safe and entertaining demolition derby that levels the playing field and encourages local participation, said Carol Ramer, secretary-treasurer of ramerinc.com. Paul and Carol Ramer, their son, two daughters, a son-in-law and several close friends run the business, which coordinates about 12 demolition derbies around Illinois every summer.
Each Ramer family member has a specific task to perform, including risk management, insurance, technical setup on cars, photography, videography and scorekeeping.
We got into demolition derbies in 1993 because the LaSalle County 4-H Fair wanted a derby but couldnt afford one, Carol Ramer said. Our family was very active with 4-H at the time, so they approached us because my husband, Paul, had been racing and running in derbies since 1967.
It is a sport we have always enjoyed, and we are trying to bring it back to the average guy rather than who has the most money to put into their car, she said. Having cars that bend and are easier to build are what gives the novice a fair chance to start in derbies, added Jim Beaty, risk manager for Ramer Race Promotions. Beaty is in charge of shutting down the demolition derby track when unsafe situations arise.
Its safety first for all the Ramers, who check fuel systems and make sure batteries are secure, among other things.
We also look at the cars frames to make sure there isnt any added material or modifications not specified in our rules, said Matt Ramer, who carefully inspects each car prior to a demolition derby.
I think the community enjoys coming out to the demolition derby, said Luke Armstrong, chairman of the Morgan County Fairs demolition derby. The last few years the derby has been struggling due to weather and fewer entries. The fair board has been trying to bring better shows to the fair, and we hope this years demolition derby will turn out to be what people want to see.

Recreation They say city sped up demolition; players mother starts petition to include diamonds in new park.
Tegan Melanson used to go to Rivertons Main Park to play baseball, but now, when the 8-year-old visits, he just bawls.
The park is the former home of Utah Select, an accelerated for-profit baseball league, which involved more than 1,700 youths from all over Utah. Tegan has been playing in the league for the past four years.
The park, and its five baseball diamonds, were demolished on July 5, one month earlier than scheduled, to make way for a new park that does not include any diamonds.
Some residents are upset that the city did not keep the Aug. 15 demolition date previously announced in Rivertons June newsletter, especially because they were under the impression that they would still have an opportunity to provide input at a City Council meeting on Tuesday.
Teveka Melanson, Tegans mother, believes that there has not been enough public input, so she started a petition to put the citys plan and the residents plan to a vote.
Before, she wanted to save the diamonds. Now, Melanson and her supporters have shifted their focus to get some baseball diamonds included in the new park.
She urges even those who do not want baseball diamonds at the new park to sign the petition so they have the opportunity to provide input on what the new park will look like, especially because they will be paying for it.
"Even if you vote to not have baseball diamonds, at least you had the chance to vote," Melanson said.
Melanson will be at the south side of the park, at 12300 S. 1300 West, at 10 a.m. Saturday to collect petition signatures. The petition is only open to those registered to vote in Riverton. To force the vote, the petition must have 20 percent or approximately 4,000 valid signatures.

In the weeks before the deadly Market Street collapse, the building's owner repeatedly warned top city officials and Salvation Army officials that the demolition could endanger the adjacent Salvation Army thrift store.
But that did not prompt the city to step in. Nor did it stop the owner from rapidly demolishing the building, with devastating consequences.
E-mails and letters reviewed by The Inquirer show repeated warnings about a possible collapse with potentially deadly results.
"This nonsense must end before someone is seriously injured or worse: those are headlines none of us want to see or read," wrote Thomas J. Simmonds Jr., property manager for the building's owner, in an e-mail to Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger on May 22. He was complaining about an impasse in negotiations with the Salvation Army, which he claimed created "a situation that poses a threat to life and limb."
That was 14 days before the June 5 collapse, in which an empty four-story building under demolition fell onto the adjacent thrift store.
Six people inside the store were killed. Thirteen were injured.
Correspondence reviewed by The Inquirer shows that STB Investments Corp., the owner of 2136-38 Market St., promised a safer demolition procedure than it actually used, and it pushed forward with the demolition despite its own warnings and its still-unresolved negotiations with the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army was seeking assurances that demolition would not proceed until a legal agreement was reached about several issues, including protection for the thrift store roof, partial removal of a chimney on the thrift store, and repairs to the common wall and the sidewalk.

SPRINGFIELD With the recent demolition of the Allis Mansion on the campus of Mercy Medical Center, Robert McCarroll, member of the Historical Commission, believes that a demolition delay ordinance will be a way to forestall the destruction of other historical buildings.
McCarroll explained to Reminder Publications that unless a building is located in a local historical district, it doesn't have much protection from being demolished without some sort of review or consideration,
"Only a local historic designation gives really strong protection," he said. Buildings that have been named to a National Register Historic District are not afforded the same level of protection.
The ordinance is now at the City Council and McCarroll is hopeful action to make it law will take place. If enacted, the ordinance would protect a building for one year.
He added the Historic Commission has been working on the ordinance "for a while," and that 100 communities in the Commonwealth have similar laws.
If such an ordinance had been in place, the demolition of the Allis Mansion would have been delayed, giving more time to find potential developers.
Although McCarroll said he believes the administration of Mercy medical Center made "a good faith effort, the time line was very tight." A developer would have to have been prepared to undertake an estimated $3 million renovation of the building.
He called the demolition of the mansion "a major, major loss."
