Worker slightly injured in NYC airport demolition - June 23, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK (AP) -- A construction worker was slightly injured Sunday during demolition of a departures runway at the now-vacant Terminal 3 at Kennedy International Airport.

Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said the worker was struck in the leg by falling debris at about 10 a.m. Sunday. Coleman said the worker did not appear to be seriously injured but was walking with a slight limp afterward.

"Apparently, a piece of the concrete or roadway fell where they didn't think it was going to fall," Coleman said.

The terminal, also known as the Worldport, is memorable for its shape, which resembles a flying saucer. Constructed more than a half century ago, the terminal once housed Pan American World Airways. Delta Air Lines began using it in 1991, when Pan American ceased operations, but left the terminal last month. Plans call for it to someday be used for parking airplanes.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. did not immediately comment.

The Sentinel published Matthew Rice: Demolition of old Stoke-on-Trent buildings should… - June 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

IT'S hard for an oil tanker to change direction while steaming across the ocean. They do not have a taxi's tight turning circle but respond slowly to even a modest change in their journey.

This analogy is frequently used when describing an organisation that seems to find it hard to change its character or plans. I wonder whether the current demolition project in the corner of Hanley's new business quarter on Broad Street is an instance of this phenomenon.

CHANGES: Former shops on Broad Street, Hanley, being knocked down to make way for the Central Business District. Picture: Ben Warburton

There is very little left of old Hanley once the thriving commercial centre of the Potteries.

Of all the towns in Stoke-on-Trent, none have been subject to such aggressive and ill advised planning proposals.

Northwest Wanderings: Combine demolition derby - June 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Waiting for a tow, a disabled combine without its rear wheels can no longer compete at the combine demolition derby. Deep ruts score the arena ground where others had been dragged to the pits.

If there is a headbanger's ball for the agrarian set, this is it. This combine demolition derby in Lind is one metal-to-metal mashup.

The Adams County town of 564 grows 10-fold once a year when these machines smash into each other until there's one survivor. Even at 7 mph, 10,000-pound combines pack plenty of punch.

Former champ Grant Miller says he uses a "rope-a-dope strategy. Be smart and stay out of a sandwich" -- getting squeezed between two others.

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

It's a squeeze play when a combine gets sandwiched between two competitors and is likely to suffer damage.

ALAN BERNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

It's standing room only at the derby with Lind's population growing ten-fold for the annual demolition derby.

Wheat farmer Josh Knodel, whose JAWS team owns seven top trophies, began driving the family combine when he was 12.
