SHEFFIELD VILLAGE The mission to tear down homes that have become public nuisances will move to Sheffield Village today.

Also, the Lorain County Land Reutilization Corp., also called the county land bank, will mark the 150th demolition with a June 4 visit by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

The attorney generals office created the Moving Ohio Forward Demolition Grant Program with $75 million allocated for counties to tear down blighted or abandoned homes. That has become a main source of revenues to pay for demolitions around Lorain County.

A contractor for the land bank will demolish 3194 E. River Road starting about 9:15 a.m.

The project is the second land bank demolition in the village, but the first for Mayor John Hunter and county officials to observe, said Patrick Metzger, director of the Lorain County Port Authority, which operates the county land bank.

Village officials referred the homes to the land bank and county officials hoped to work with the property owners to raze the structures, Metzger said.

They were collapsing, he said about the homes.

However, the property owners were unable to complete the job so the land bank program will, Metzger said.

Sheffield Village has active building code enforcement; homes stay in good repair and property values are high, Hunter said. Nuisance properties are not nearly as numerous as they are in other, larger communities, he said.

LANSFORD A historic building is being torn down in Carbon County to make way for a new place for firefighters.

On Monday, demolition crews started to tear down what used to be the town hall in Lansford. Up until last week it also served to house some fire department equipment. A new larger building will be built in its place.

That building was built in the early 1900s and the size of the apparatus today is a lot bigger than it was then, said Lansford Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hood.

This building, I hate to say it, was going to the dogs. It was left go and the cheapest thing to do is tear it down, Tom Staruch, Lansford Fire Department

Aleida VanBuren has been busy taking pictures of the demolition to help create a historical scrapbook for the fire department.

I have been coming here since I was little. My uncle was a firefighter and now my boyfriend is a firefighter here and they all make us feel at home, like family.

The demolition contractor says care has to be taken in tearing down the former town hall and fire department garage.

We take it down surgically, keep everything separated. We have to be very careful because its close to the street and its got an exterior breezeway attached to another building, said Joe Sparrow, Shea Demolition.

The demolition contractor says there is still time to pick up a brick in memory of the old building.
