Demolition of squatter houses halted -

KUALA LUMPUR: THE demolition of several squatter houses in Kampung Federal here yesterday was halted when residents protested against the low compensation and questioned the status of the foreign workers assigned to do the job.
Two of the six workers left when residents asked the police to check if they were illegal immigrants.
Earlier, there was a heated exchange between Bagan Dalam assemblyman A.Tanasekharan and Barisan Nasional area coordinator David Chua when the land owner arrived with a court bailiff and police personnel to demolish several houses vacated by 13 squatter families.
Chua said it was improper for the land owner to compensate the squatter families only RM1,000 to RM5,000 to vacate the houses in Jalan Siram, but Tanasekharan, a lawyer, countered that they had to respect the eviction order issued a year ago.
Tanasekharan said the state had offered hardcore poor housing units in Ampang Jajar for rental at RM100 a month as a temporary measure.
He said the state government was willing to pay the transport charges for them to move out, and also help them apply for low-cost units later.
Chua said the families are unable to pay the rent, and asked the authorities to move them directly into the free low-cost units instead.
He said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also the MP for Bagan, had failed in his duty to resolve the matter.
Both the land owner and the residents had earlier agreed to defer the demolition to settle the issue amicably, but the matter dragged on for two years because the families wanted higher compensation.
Mohd Ariff Megat Kechik, 40, said he was willing to relocate only if the land owner gave a better compensation, but not the RM4,000 currently offered to him.

Jessica Ennis said it would be a "huge shame" for Sheffield to lose the Don Valley Stadium
The demolition of Sheffield's Don Valley athletics stadium would be a "huge shame" for the city, Olympic champion Jessica Ennis has said.
Earlier this month the BBC revealed the stadium, where the gold-medal winner trains, could be knocked down to save Sheffield council money.
But demolishing the stadium "sends the wrong message", said Ennis.
No decisions have been made and demolition was just one of a list of money-saving options, the council said.
Sheffield Council faces making 50m of cuts in 2013-14 on top of 140m cuts already made in the last two years.
A council document seen by the BBC, showed the authority could save 500,000 per year if the Don Valley Stadium, which was opened in 1991 for the World Student Games in Sheffield at a cost of 29m, was to close.
It raised the possibility of reopening the city's smaller Woodburn Road Athletics Stadium, which was closed 18 months ago to save money.

Suit filed over demolition -

WATERVLIET A lawsuit filed to stop demolition of St. Patrick's Church comes as the city has issued three permits to raze the church, its rectory and school to make way for a supermarket.
Citizens for St. Patrick's and 20 residents filed a lawsuit Thursday against the City Council claiming it violated city and state laws to rezone the 3-acre church property at 515 19th St. to allow development.
"We are going to stick with this until we have exhausted every effort to preserve St. Patrick's and see the block developed in a way that benefits the community," Christine Bulmer, a spokeswoman for Citizens for St. Patrick's, plaintiff in the case.
The grass-roots organization also has filed a notice of appeal to overturn a judge's Dec. 31 decision to allow the sale of the church property for $1 million.
The lawsuit contends the City Council failed to comply with the city zoning code, the state Environmental Quality Review Act, the state Open Meetings Law and general municipal law when it rezoned the property. The legal papers also claim the council undertook spot zoning when the historic church site was rezoned.
The lawsuit, filed last week, asks state Supreme Court in Albany County to stop any demolition or development at the church site, revoke the rezoning and void the City Council's declaration of negative environmental significance for the property.
Nigro Companies has proposed building a 40,200-square-foot Price Chopper supermarket and two smaller commercial buildings. The City Council voted unanimously in November to approve the rezoning to business from residential that was needed for the project to move ahead.
The two-pronged legal attack did not faze city officials.
"We knew it was coming," Mayor Michael Manning said Monday. "We just got it. Our legal team is looking at it."
City Building Inspector Mark Gilchrist said he issued demolition permits good for six months to demolish the church, rectory and school. He said he did not issue the permits for the three residential duplexes as he did not have documentary evidence that Nigro Companies owns the private residences, which are the northern boundary of the parcel along 23rd Street.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A lonely spot on Buffalo's east side is about to be disrupted by demolition.
The site sits on a plot of land at Best and East North Streets, right by City Honors High School. Human remains have been found there before and now there's question about how possible future remains would be handled, with the demolition approaching.
The fact that the Woodson Gardens Apartment complex is still standing could be dangerous. Windows are dilapidated and wood panels look like they've been chewed off.
The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority owns the restricted property and is getting ready to take it down this spring.
"We want to do what's in the best interest of the community as a whole and right now, the first thing that we need to do is focus on abatement and demolition," said Dawn Sanders-Garrett, the executive director of BMHA.
A contractor has been selected to demolish the 14 filthy buildings there. Crews will have to make sure all utilities are cut inside, clean up the area and fill in foundations. During this process it's possible human remains will be found.
The chances of finding bones under the muddy ground are good. In June 2008, about 125 pieces of human remains were found when City Honors, which is across the street, was renovating.
"There were really no records kept, who was buried here, we don't have any site maps," said archaeologist Doug Mooney at the time.
In Dec. 2007, a team of archeologists found remains of three adults and a child 10 feet under the front lawn at the school.
"I think anyone going in there with foreknowledge will be particularly, I think careful and observant, one would hope so," said Tim Tielman of the Campaign for Greater Buffalo, "If an operator sees something or a supervisor sees something in the ground, they [should] be very sensitive."

Demolition begins for Palm Beach Mall -

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach Mall, an iconic staple in the West Palm Beach community for nearly five decades, will be torn down Thursday morning.
The plan is to build up the patch of land with shops and stores with hopes of attracting local and tourist dollars.
The demolition will take two and a half months to complete.Once done, the property will consist of flat sand on which the new construction of a fashion center will begin.JCPenny will remain on the property.
In an effort to be environmentally friendly, the waste, which is 3,500 tons of metal, will be recycled. The rest of the scrap will be taken to a landfill.
City officials hope the new fashion center will attract more new developments to the area like the proposed upscale rental community developers plan to put on Palm Beach Lakes and Congress.
Mayor Jeri Muoio said the project will also bring more than 4,000 jobs to the area, which will result in $82 million in wages and an estimated $300 million in economic activity.
"We're talking about, sort of, all four corners of that area being further developed and we'll see a whole different economic energy in that area," said Mayor Muoio.
The city has also put out an invitation for bids from sub contractors to help construct 10 retail buildings encompassing approximately 460,000 square feet on the site. EMJ Corporation is the general contractor on the project.
Bids are due to the city no later than Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.

Posted by Scott T. Smith / CBS12 News WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Demolition is officially under way at the Palm Beach Mall, with backhoes attacking the Sears building first, tearing it down to make way for a new designer outlet mall.
It's expected to be a major economic boost to the area.
The demolition kicked off at 10 a.m. They are using backhoes to knock down the walls and structures, and most of the rubble will be recycled.
The mayor was on site to kick off the demolition. they started with the old sears building, and are making their way across the property. The demo is expected to take about three months. The plan is tear the mall down except for jcpenney, and build a new outlet mall. For years, the old palm beach mall has been a staple in the community, and as the walls come crumbling down, so are the memories.
One woman watched the demolition with her children: "I remember all of it, I remember the whole thing. I remember nursing my children in the mall, too."
West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio said the change will benefit the region: "I look forward to the day our residents can benefit from the mall, and the promises it's going to deliver."
While CBS12 was shooting the demolition, hundreds bees starting swarming around our live truck, photographer and CBS12's aerial drone. We're thinking there may have been a nest that stirred up while they were tearing down the mall. FULL STORY/VIDEO
The new outlets will have about 100 stores, plus it's expected to create more than 1,500 jobs. The mayor also mentioned the new mall will bring in $1 million in property tax revenue.Palm Beach Mall demolition under way to make room for new designer outlet mall

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - FIFA on Wednesday denied reports that it was seeking the demolition of Rio's former Indian Museum located next to the iconic Maracana stadium, the venue for the final of the 2014 World Cup final.
The demolition is at the center of a months-long legal tussle, with authorities saying they will raze the abandoned colonial-style building within 30 days at the request of football's world governing body as part of an urban renewal program.
But the agency in charge of protecting the city's cultural heritage and the Rio's prosecutor's office are opposed.
"FIFA has always supported efforts by the Brazilian government to facilitate access to the 2014 World Cup matches for the indigenous people and in this context we want to make it clear that FIFA has never called for the demolition of Rio's Indian Museum," its press office said.
"Neither FIFA nor the (World Cup's) Local Organizing Committee own or build the stadiums. The owners decide what is best for the region, the teams, the communities," the body said in a written statement.
A spokeswoman for the state of Rio queried by AFP said FIFA was insisting on "the public and cars being able to quickly vacate the (Maracana) stadium and its surrounding area" and noted that "the demolition (of the museum building) would be the solution".
"It is part of all the urban renewal works needed to meet FIFA demands. But FIFA is not demanding that the museum (building) itself be razed," she added.
The Maracana sport complex is getting a thorough facelift for the World Cup and the 2016 summer Olympics.
The building slated for demolition housed the first Indian Museum from 1953 until 1977 when it was transferred to the Botafogo district.
The empty edifice is now owned by the agriculture ministry.
