Nato summit fences sent to Calais in attempt to block illegal immigrants - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Immigration minister James Brokenshire said the fence will send a message that Britain is no soft touch for migrants.

The numbers of migrants have recently increased, sparking clashes between rival groups prompting the Mayor of Calais to appeal for more help with the trouble.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph Mr Brokenshire said it is up to the French to maintain security and order on their own land, but added that the UK would do what it could to help - recalling a 3 million boost to the port earlier this year to improve security.

In a stark warning to would-be illegal immigrants Mr Brokenshire said they "should be under no illusion about what awaits them if they arrive here illegally".

He said the Immigration Act ensures those who should not be in Britain will not get benefits, housing, bank accounts or driving licences, and added that criminal gangs who traffic people to the port on the promise of a better life will be investigated and broken up.

Mr Brokenshire said: "Effective solutions must involve co-operation, not confrontation.

"But in working with our international partners, I am, of course ever mindful of our responsibilities on this side of the Channel, chief of which is the need for an immigration system that is fair to British citizens and legitimate migrants and tough on those who flout the law."

Yesterday former home secretary Lord Howard of Lympne said France needs to "get its act together" and deal with the growing numbers of asylum seekers in Calais rather than blaming Britain.

He told BBC Radio 4'S Today programme normal protocol is that asylum seekers apply to stay in the first safe country they reach.

Nato 'ring of steel' fences sent to Calais to stop immigrants - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Britain will send the fences used at the Nato summit to Calais in an effort to stop illegal immigrants getting into Britain from the French port.

The immigration minister James Brokenshire said the move is part of a bid to send a message that the UK is "no soft touch" for migrants.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the minister said the new fencing would replace the "inadequate" fencing currently in place, and added that a hope would be to create secure parking for legal travellers to wait without the threat of hassle from any disruption.

Britain will send the 9ft 'ring of steel' fences used at the Nato summit in Wales to Calais in an effort to stop illegal immigrants getting into Britain.

It would replace the "inadequate" fencing currently in place and hopefully create secure parking for legal travellers to wait without the threat of hassle from any disruption.

Immigration minister James Brokenshire said the move is part of a bid to send a message that the UK is "no soft touch" for migrants.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph he warned would-be illegal immigrants Mr they "should be under no illusion about what awaits them if they arrive here illegally".

He said it was up to the French to maintain security and order on their own land but Britain would do what it could to help.

France should stop blaming Britain and "get its act together" and deal with growing numbers of asylum seekers in Calais, according to a former home secretary.

Lord Howard of Lympne said he had "some sympathy" with the mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, but he said she was "directing her frustration and her anger at the wrong target" by threatening to blockade the port and demanding that London "take responsibility" for them.

UK Offers To Send 'Ring Of Steel' To Calais - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Joe Tidy, Sky News Reporter

The Home Office is offering to give French border officials the fence that was used to protect world leaders at the Nato summit in an attempt to deal with the immigrant crisis in Calais.

Known as the "ring of steel", the 11ft tall, 11-mile-long fence was erected around Celtic Manor and other Nato venues in South Wales.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, immigration minister James Brokenshire acknowledges the growing issue of security in the port of Calais where migrants are attempting to gain access to Britain in vast numbers.

The minister writes: "Obviously it's up to the French to maintain security and order on their own soil, but we want to do what we can to help. We offered the port of Calais 3m three months ago to help improve security we now offer our French partners the fences that were used this week to keep the Nato summit safe in Newport.

"These could replace and enlarge the inadequate fencing in Calais which is too easy for illegal immigrants to scale."

It is estimated that 1,500 migrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea and Ethiopia are living in makeshift camps near the port and regularly climbing over fences in order to get to lorries and ferries.

On Wednesday, dozens of men stunned French officials by storming directly into the port in broad daylight.

Most of the young men claim to be seeking asylum in the UK and risk their lives to get onto ships bound for Dover.

Sudanese migrant Ibrahim Abubakar said: "I have no home, I have no job, I have no place to sleep. This is my problem here. I want to stay here, but they give me a long time, I wait four months here. After that, maybe I find a home, I find a job. It's very difficult here. But I think after I go to England maybe I find job, I find a home, I find something to eat."

Brown-Kashkari debate: GOP candidate for governor might swing for fences tonight - September 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Josh Richman and Jessica Calefati

Picture Neel Kashkari striding to home plate late in the game, shouldering his bat and pointing confidently at the outfield lights.

California's Republican candidate for governor, who is taking on Jerry Brown in the Democrat's bid to win an unprecedented fourth term, must swing for the fences in Thursday night's first -- and probably only -- debate if he has any chance of closing the incumbent's big lead, state political experts say.

A new Field Poll finds Brown leads Kashkari by 16 points among likely voters. With less than nine weeks to go before Election Day, and less than five before voting by mail begins, Kashkari, 41, still suffers from low recognition: Four in 10 voters still have no opinion of him, while more than 90 percent have an opinion of Brown, 76, who has been part of California's political scene for five decades.

"Kashkari needs to make a lot of news and a lot of noise and hope for lots and lots of zingers and ... he really needs to pray for an error by Jerry Brown" -- something that will be repeated on the nightly news or in campaign ads, said Thad Kousser, a UC San Diego political-science professor.

"Anything other than a debacle for Jerry Brown is a victory for Jerry Brown," Kousser said.

Mark DiCamillo, the Field Poll's director, agreed that the debate will be "more about Brown's performance."

"Because Kashkari is not very well-known, most voters are making a yes/no vote on Brown, and he's pretty well-positioned for that," DiCamillo said.
