Updated: Saturday, 19 Apr 2014 10:49 | Comments Rebel Fitz
Michael Winters is hoping Rebel Fitz can blossom on the big stage over fences when he tackles the Grade One Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse on Sunday.
The Cork handler has always felt the nine-year-old would come into his own over the larger obstacles and he enjoyed a fine campaign last summer with five wins on the bounce.
The former Galway Hurdle hero disappointed on his final outing of last year at Cheltenham but bounced back to winning ways on his return to action in a hurdle at Cork last month.
Winters' yard had been under a bit of a cloud but he feels the horses are healthy again, and reports Rebel Fitz in fine fettle ahead of his biggest test to date.
"He's in great order. He had a grand introduction at Mallow and has had time to recover from that," said Winters.
"The horses weren't right for a long time and it just makes you look over you shoulder a bit, but he seems to be seriously well.
"We've had him away at Michael Hourigan's to jump. He was very enthusiastic, seemed happy in himself and came away from it good.
"He hasn't been pitted against the horses over fences that he should have been taking on. He won five last year without having to battle and this is the first time he's up against horses as good as him.
"If he turns up 100 per cent in himself I suppose he might be the best horse in the race. He had a bit of class over hurdles and hopefully that will stand to him.

As I Am: Will now be sent over fences
As I Am is set to strut her stuff over fences this summer after signing off over the smaller obstacles in magnificent fashion in the Thoroughbred Breeders Association Mares Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Returning after a 108-day absence, the admirable one-eyed six-year-old jumped with aplomb and galloped her rivals into submission to register her seventh victory since June.
Emily Gray did her best to make a race of it in the straight, but 7/2 shot As I Am produced a mighty leap at the final flight and stormed up the hill under Conor Shoemark to seal a three-length triumph.
However, trainer Don Cantillon revealed As I Am was nearly withdrawn from the Listed contest.
She was almost a non-runner because of a hip injury she had very recently, but luckily the vet passed her fit, said the Newmarket handler.
The rider said she didnt overlove the ground yet she was just amazing. She jumped so high at the last hurdle. Shes had her holiday. Thats why she hadnt a run for 108 days.
Shes going to go summer jumping. Her next race might be a two-mile beginners chase at Worcester on May 14. Ive been schooling her over fences, which is why shes given her hurdles so much daylight.
Shoemark swiftly completed a double as Me And Ben (9/1) opened her account over fences in the EBF/Thoroughbred Breeders Association Mares Novices Chase Finale.
Fergal OBriens seven-year-old overtook the always prominent Possibly Flora after jumping the second last and plugged on stoutly to score by two lengths.

On some Jacksonville streets, garden gnomes stand sentry. On a few, there are lawn jockeys. Around the streets of Black Hammock Island, there are cows. Horses. Buffalo. Maybe an emu.
That difference helps explain why people in the remote North Jacksonville community expressed shock about a city inspector ticketing dozens of homeowners this winter for having fences taller than the 4-foot limit spelled out in city rules written with more thought to neighborhoods like Arlington and St. Nicholas.
I was rather upset about it. I dont want my fence taken down, said Mozell Masters, 81, whose 5-foot-tall chain link fence stood for decades without controversy.
Now, neighbors on the rural island abutting the Nassau River are asking the City Council for a break.
They want the council to approve a special rule, called an overlay, allowing front-yard fences on the island to stand up to 6 feet tall.
A council committee approved that bill (2014-147) this week, and the full council will take it up Tuesday.
Our situation is different than Avondale, different than Southside or Mandarin. Were not trying to say were better or worse. Were just citizens trying to live, said Wayne Shortridge, president of the Black Hammock Island Civic Association.
For a long time, that wasnt really an issue. The neighborhood north of Cedar Point Road was about as far as anyone could travel from downtown without leaving Duval County, and only a few people made the trip.
More people started settling there in the 1990s, and by the last decade there was a rush to get some of the last waterfront lots on the market. Away from the water, there were cheaper lots where both small houses and manufactured homes popped up.
But friction followed some neighbors, and helped set the stage for about 30 property owners to be cited around Christmas.

Marin Theatre Company first ventured into the oeuvre of August Wilson in 2011 with "Seven Guitars," part of the late playwright's mammoth 10-play "Pittsburgh Cycle" or "Century Cycle," exploring African-American life in the Hills District of Pittsburgh, Penn., in each decade of the 20th century. Now MTC returns to Wilson's work with "Fences," winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for drama and Tony Award for best play.
Just as "Seven Guitars" is the 1940s installment of the cycle, "Fences" is set in the 1950s. The main character, Troy Maxson, is also in his 50s. Now working as a garbage man, Troy was a baseball player in the Negro Leagues when he was younger and bitterly resents never being allowed to play in the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin. Whenever any great player is mentioned, he scoffs that he played with guys who were way better than that guy. His son Cory is being recruited for college football and wants to play, but Troy won't let him pursue sports only to be cheated the way Troy was.
"Fences" has a lot of history in the Bay Area. It played San Francisco's Curran Theatre in 1987 on its way to Broadway, and Carole Shorenstein Hays produced both that Broadway production and the 2010 one that won a Tony for best revival. There have been many stagings of "Fences" at local theaters over the years, including TheatreWorks and Lorraine Hansberry Theatre. The Marin production is presented in association with the latter theater, San Francisco's most prominent African-American theater company, which is on a producing hiatus and offering its subscribers a "passport season" of relevant productions by other local theaters.
LHT artistic director Steven Anthony Jones also performs in the show as Bono, Troy's best friend, co-worker and drinking buddy. Jones brings a winning warmth and humor to the role of the indulgent pal who amiably pooh-poohs Troy's extravagant tall tales of having faced down Death and the Devil in nonmetaphorical fashion.
Troy is played with riveting intensity by Carl Lumbly, a Berkeley-based actor known for TV roles on "Alias" and "Cagney & Lacey," who has delivered a string of excellent performances lately at San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre and other local theater.
Lumbly delivers Wilson's trademark long, poetic speeches beautifully, but his Troy Maxson is a man of many fascinating pieces that never quite come together into a cohesive whole. He's chatty and playful with Bono and with his wife, Rose, but he's the hardest of hard men with Cory (an upbeat and enthusiastic Eddie Ray Jackson), stern, pigheaded and overbearing. This compartmentalization is written into the character, but his emotional shifts seem reactive to the last thing that was said rather than building from moment to moment over the course of the play. And the more we learn about how he thinks and how he got to be this way, the less it excuses anything he does, so that by the time we're asked to think well of Troy despite everything, he's already used up all the goodwill he had.
Margo Hall makes an excellent foil for Troy as his good-natured wife, who tolerates a lot of nonsense with an indulgent shake of the head but doesn't hesitate to tell him to knock it off when needed. Tyee Tilghman is amusingly slick as Troy's eldest son, a nattily dressed (by Christine Crook) jazz musician. Chris Houston supplies a hectic but period-appropriate blaring jazz score. Adrian Roberts is compelling as the requisite addled mystic that's in every Wilson play, this time in the form of Troy's childlike brother with brain damage from the war. Alternating with Jade Sweeney, Marin City seventh grader Makaelah Bashir is sweetly shy as the little girl in the family.
While J.B. Wilson's set is pretty simple the facade of a brick house with what appears to be a lumpy cliff face behind it lighting designer Kurt Landisman maintains a base level of gloom through shifting times of day and night.
Despite some slow patches, the staging by out-of-town director Derrick Sanders hits most of the dramatic moments effectively, as well as the humorous banter. But here too there's a question of what all these intense moments add up to. There's some depth missing at the heart of this production, and it feels like what's missing may be its heart.
