Gold Coast Council to bring in the bulldozers - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Topics: beach, bulldozer, fences, fencing, gold coast city council, golden four dr, tugun

EIGHT residents in Golden Four Dr, Tugun, will have their beachside fences demolished by the Gold Coast City Council later this month, for encroaching on public Crown land, News Ltd reports.

Friends of Currumbin coordinated a series of protests which sparked the action, which will see fences, showers and landscaping which pass the public boundary line removed.

Initially residents were given until June 30 by the GCCC to remove their encroaching property if the State Government rejects their application to buy the public beachfront land, but now GCCC councilors have received legal advice the fences could be demolished immediately after the state government decision.

Tugun councillor Chris Robbins told News Ltd that Golden Four Drive residents affected will be given sufficient time to remove encroaching property and fences.

No Tugun Path leader Kate Malouf said that residents would appeal the decision if their application to buy the land is rejected.

"This has been a difficult few months and we have had everything from protests to the poisoning of grass along the boundary line. It's out of our hands now."

Obama mending fences with Merkel after spying allegations - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

President Barack Obama this week sought to assuage tensions that have crept into the U.S.-Germany relationship following revelations that the National Security Agency had been spying upon Chancellor Angela Merkel since 2002, with outrage in Berlin centred on the surveillance of her mobile phone.

On Wednesday Ms. Merkel was said to have accepted an invitation from Mr. Obama to visit the U.S. in the coming months to discuss, among other things, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations and NATO Summit, and other shared interests.

Although a White House readout of the two leaders phone call suggested that Mr. Obama had principally called Ms. Merkel to wish her a speedy recovery following pelvic injury and to congratulate her on the formation of her new cabinet, their discussion comes in the wake of a bilateral rift over the spying scandal.

While a spokesperson declined to say whether the NSA phone tap had been discussed, the release of top-secret intelligence documents on U.S. spy programmes by whistleblower and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden last summer led to Ms. Merkels office warning that bugging friends is unacceptable.

Facts about the NSAs surveillance of targets in Germany came to light along with information on the Agencys monitoring of persons and institutions in a host of friendly nations, including India, the European Union, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Turkey. Traditional ideological adversaries and sensitive Middle Eastern countries, were also on the list of targets, reports noted.

Soon after this it appeared that Mr. Obama was seeking to place distance between the White House and allegations that the NSA spied on Washingtons allies in Berlin, with Spokesperson Jay Carney saying, The concerns raised by our allies cause us concern too.

Congressional committees then grilled intelligence bosses such as Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and NSA chief Keith Alexander, and some leaders such as Senate Intelligence Committee Chairperson Dianne Feinstein said they were unequivocally totally opposed to the NSAs collection of intelligence on leaders of U.S. allies.

Following a sharp debate on imposing some restrictions on the programmes of the NSA, which in theory operates under rules set by the shadowy Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court, Mr. Obama appeared to be leaning towards recommendations of a review panel to shift responsibility for the bulk collection of telephone records away from the NSA and on to the phone companies, in a bid to restore public confidence.

In a press conference last month Mr. Obama said that in light of the disclosures coming from documents supplied by Mr. Snowden, It is clear that whatever benefits the configuration of this particular programme may have, may be outweighed by the concerns that people have on its potential abuse.

With Mr. Obama likely to make a final decision on reforming surveillance programmes in the coming months, his broad endorsement of reform came on the back of a federal judge saying for the first time ever that the NSAs programmes were very likely to be unconstitutional.

Useful, though lightly raced, over hurdles, David Pipe's charge transferred his promising work on the schooling ground with a superb round of jumping as he disposed of the opposition in convincing manner.

Owned by Dai Walters and James and Jean Potter, whose colours were also carried to victory by Mountainous in the Coral Welsh Grand National, Edmund Kean (3-1) galloped on resolutely to defeat Whats Happening by two and a half lengths.

"I schooled him earlier in the week and I always thought whatever he did over hurdles was a bonus because he's always jumped fences very well at home," said Scudamore.

"He was good all the way round, and certainly was over the last four fences. He showed a willing attitude after that as well.

"He handles soft ground and he's got a bit of class as well, so I wouldn't be afraid of running him on better ground. He's a nice prospect.

"The owners have had a good couple of weeks, so it's nice to keep the ball rolling for them."

Massena had to work hard to overcome Un Anjou and justify even-money favouritism in the Groby Novices' Handicap Chase.

Un Anjou landed with a narrow lead after the last but Massena found reserves for Aidan Coleman and got back up to score by three-quarters of a length.

"Jumping the first two or three fences it looked like he was jumping the puissance wall at Wembley," said trainer Venetia Williams, who also owns the seven-year-old.

Kenya’s rhinos cannot survive in the wild - January 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Charity Rhino Ark says rhinos in Kenya are increasingly vulnerable to organised poaching gangs and should be protected in sanctuaries.

Kenya is home to about 850 black and white rhino. (Reuters)

After roaming free for millions of years, rhinos may be able to survive in Kenya only if they are protected behind fences in sanctuaries, a leading conservation charity said.

Kenya has about 850 black and white rhinos out of approximately 25000 in Africa, but more than 50 were killed for their horns in 2013, up from 30 killings in 2012, and those that remain are increasingly vulnerable to organised poaching gangs, said Christian Lambrechts, director of Nairobi-based conservation group Rhino Ark.

"The situation in the last year has deteriorated. The gangs are extremely well organised and people from inside the Kenya Wildlife Service have been found to be colluding [with them]," he said.

"There is a growing realisation that private land holders do not have the ability to safeguard all of them. Rhinos cannot remain in the wild. They must be brought into sanctuaries."

Lambrechts, a former United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) officer, said up to 100 rhino could be eventually relocated in the Aberdare mountains in central Kenya, which has been surrounded by a 250 mile electrified fence built by Rhino Ark with the help of dozens of communities along its length.

"Kenya is lacking room for around 100 rhino. The Kenya wildlife service is looking to safeguard all the rhino in the country," Lambrechts says.

But he said the Aberdare fence, completed in 2009, did not stop poachers killing two out of the eight rhinos living in the hills this year.

"Never have fences been needed more, but they are not enough. The fence has not stopped organised poaching. Fences only stop opportunistic poaching. Nor are sanctuaries the complete answer. Rhinos are being lost from inside them too."

Blood Cotil (1/4) was still going well in front on his fencing debut when he hit the penultimate obstacle pretty hard, allowing Jimmy Mangan's charge, ridden by his son Paddy, to come home unchallenged.

The 7/2 chance had been the only one to keep tabs on the Willie Mullins-trained hot-pot but he looked destined for second place until the demise of the classy five-year-old and jockey Paul Townend.

West Council took the runner-up spot, 24 lengths adrift of Castle Wings, who was winning for the first time over fences at the 13th attempt.

The winning trainer revealed Castle Wings could be aimed at the Thyestes Chase at Gowran on January 23.

He said: "He ran a great race at Limerick (second over Christmas) and I did worry that this race was coming a bit quick for him. But if you're not in, you can't win!

"I'd like to have a crack at the Thyestes if he gets in at the weights. It's been a lucky race for us in the past."

Mullins and Townend had struck with Wicklow Brave (2/5 favourite), who had little difficulty landing the odds in the McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle.

Winner of his last three bumpers, the five-year-old coasted to a seven-length success on his hurdles bow.

Phylicia Rashad directs August Wilson’s ‘Fences’ at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton - January 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Troy Maxson was a man before his time, but his legacy remains one of theaters most potent.

The middle-aged garbage man at the center of August Wilsons Fences, Maxons youth was defined by the baseball talent he showed as a star player in the Negro Leagues. But because he was born too early to play in the majors, he is determined to shield his son Cory from similar disappointment.

The play, which won Wilson a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1987, chronicles in detail specific trials of African-American life in 1957 Pittsburgh.

But it resonates with timeless power as it delves into relationships that fray under long-simmering frustration a father and son divided by generational changes, a husband and wife whose everyday sacrifices whittle away at their happiness as well as loyalties and bonds that cannot be undone.

The play is so textured and layered with language, with thought, with feeling, with family, with hope, with dreams, with love, with disappointment, and, finally with forgiveness and self-acceptance, says Phylicia Rashad, who will direct the play at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton beginning Friday.

And history, lets not leave that out, she adds. There was so much to attract my attention and to earn my devotion.

Rashad helms the show immediately following a Long Wharf Theatre production in New Haven that received complimentary reviews.

The cast includes Esau Pritchett as Troy; Chris Myers as Cory; Portia as Troys wife, Rose; Phil McGlaston as the neighbor Bono; Jared McNeill as Troys older son, Lyons; and G. Alvarez Reid as Troys brother, Gabriel, who suffered a head injury in World War II.

Rashad rose to fame as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show and has maintained a strong presence in the theater. In 2004, she became the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for best actress in a play for A Raisin in the Sun, which she reprised on television in 2008.

Also in 2004, she appeared as Esther, a mystical figure believed to be 285 years old, in Wilsons Gem of the Ocean on Broadway.

    Verdict

Denis Hogan is a brilliant placer of his horses and looks to have found another opportunity for LUKE'S BENEFIT, who won over hurdles at Fairyhouse last month and completed a double over fences at Punchestown on New Year's Eve. He's in such good heart that a 6lb penalty looks manageable and a hat-trick beckons. Treat Yourself was conceding 12lb to the selection when beaten seven lengths over hurdles at Thurles in February so the revised weights put him in with a shout on his handicap debut over fences. Golden Ticket landed a novices' handicap here in November but was very disappointing when strongly fancied at Navan a month later. Worldor has won twice over timber but hasn't shown much so far over fences, though he makes his handicap bow here.
