Brussels (dpa) - NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on Russia Wednesday to remove fences it has erected between the disputed republic of South Ossetia and the rest of Georgia, saying that they violate Moscows international commitments.
South Ossetia, along with nearby Abkhazia, were at the centre of a brief war in 2008 between Russia and Georgia. Russia now recognizes the two South Caucasus breakaway regions as independent, while the West considers them to be part of Georgia.
The fences and other "obstacles" that have been erected in South Ossetia for several months are "in contradiction with Russias international commitments and (do) not contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict," Rasmussen said in a statement.
"It has a negative impact on the situation on the ground and it affects the lives of those citizens of Georgia who live on either side of the administrative boundary lines," he added. "I call for the removal of these barriers."
The evening before, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton had also expressed "profound concern" about Russias actions and called for the barriers to be removed, arguing that they "seriously challenge stability and security."
Relations between NATO and Russia have been strained in recent years over the alliances plans for a missile defence shield in Europe. Georgia aspires to join the military alliance.

ROANOKE, Texas (AP) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he isn't feeling a lot of pressure in NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
Earnhardt has rebounded from an engine failure and 35th-place finish in the first week of the Chase with a pair of top-10 finishes. He says the last two weeks have been "really encouraging" and that he had probably the best two cars he's had all season. He started on the pole and finished second last week at Dover.
During a charity appearance Thursday night at a barbecue joint about five miles from Texas Motor Speedway, Earnhardt said his team is "swinging for the fences every weekend" with seven races left.
Earnhardt is 10th in the standings, 57 points behind leader Matt Kenseth going into Sunday's race at Kansas.

WASHINGTON TheUnited States andits allies have called onMoscow todismantle barriers erected byRussian border control guards between Georgia andits de-facto independent republic ofSouth Ossetia, saying theso-called "borderization" violates Tbilisi's sovereignty.
"We note with concern thecontinued andincreasing activities byRussian security forces toerect fences andother physical barriers along theadministrative boundary lines ofthe occupied territories inGeorgia," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Wednesday.
Georgian officials andcitizens living onthe border with South Ossetia have sounded thealarm since Russian border guards last month started installing barbed-wire fencing near Georgia's border with thebreakaway republic.
South Ossetia delegated theprotection ofits borders toRussia ina 2009 deal, citing theabsence ofits own border patrol. Russia anda handful ofother countries have recognized South Ossetia andanother de-facto independent region, Abkhazia, as sovereign governments, but most other countries continue toconsider them as part ofGeorgia.
Thedispute over thetwo regions has been asticking point inrelations between Russia andWestern countries, which criticized Moscow's decision torecognize thetwo republics in2008 after Russia andGeorgia fought abrief war over South Ossetia.
Tbilisi accused Russia earlier this year ofexecuting aland grab byerecting fencing between South Ossetia andGeorgia, though Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said inJune that Moscow was merely acting under theterms ofits 2009 deal with South Ossetia.
Ina statement nearly identical tothe one read byHarf onWednesday, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said thefence-building "does not contribute toa peaceful resolution ofthe conflict."
"It has anegative impact onthe situation onthe ground, andit affects thelives ofthose citizens ofGeorgia who live oneither side ofthe administrative boundary lines," Rasmussen said Wednesday. "I call forthe removal ofthese barriers."
TheNATO chief also called onRussia "to reverse its recognition ofthe South Ossetia andAbkhazia regions ofGeorgia as independent states."
Thestatements fromNATO andthe State Department came aday after Catherine Ashton, theEU's high representative forforeign affairs andsecurity policy, called onthe barriers tobe removed andexpressed "profound concern" over "the continued andincreasing activities byRussian security forces toerect fences andother obstacles along administrative boundary lines inGeorgia."
