The once-useful veteran Powerstation alternates between fences and hurdles these days and is better handicapped over the bigger obstacles, unlike the potentially very useful chaser Allee Garde who will probably just need this before tackling fences again. A Decent Excuse was a little unlucky when beaten narrowly by ROADTOABBEYFEALE at Limerick last month and followed that with an astonishing 33-length victory in a maiden at Naas where the very heavy ground took its toll on his rivals. But the winner is going from strength to strength and, with a 6lb pull in the weights, can confirm the form and complete his hat-trick. Irish Soul completed a hat-trick around this time last year and is still potentially reasonably treated while Quietly Fancied has some fine form over fences to his credit and reverts to hurdles on what looks a lenient mark.

MICHIGAN CITY At its meeting Tuesday night at City Hall, the Park Board approved a proposal which will allow home owners to install snow fences on city land to encourage dune growth towards the beach and prevent blowing sand from piling up on homeowner properties.

Parks Superintendent Jan Orlich said the proposal was one of the recommendations submitted by SmithGroupJJR, who completed an ecological assessment report for Sheridan Beach and the Esplanade.

Board member Max Barrick questioned whether the fences would be uneven, but Orlich said the Parks Department will tell interested homeowners where they can place the fences, which she said should be 50 feet north of the nearest fore-dune.

Barrick also questioned whether the city would be held liable if neighboring homeowners, without snow fences, experienced problems, but Orlich said the homeowners should not experience any more sand problems than they are already facing. She also added that installation of the fences will be voluntary.

The board approved a $10 increase to replace lost parking stickers for Washington Park. The Parks Department decided to approve the rate increase, which will increase the cost for a replacement sticker to $20, as a means of discouraging people from attempting to acquire more stickers when they have not actually lost the original.

In the past several years, the Parks Department has had to issue 30 to 35 replacement stickers.

In Orlichs report to the board, she said Wissco Irrigation Inc., which installed the irrigation system at Westcott Park, has verbally agreed to a five-year warranty for the system. Orlich said she began talks with Wissco after she had discovered leaks in the lines. Written confirmation of Wisscos agreement with the city is pending.

While Grands Crus is a leading fancy for the Paddy Power Gold Cup on Saturday, Dynaste begins his career over bigger obstacles.

Like Grands Crus, Dynaste had top form in staying hurdles, including when finishing second to the brilliant Big Buck's in January.

He is reported to have taken to fences well at home and his trainer David Pipe is expecting a good effort from the six-year-old.

"He's in good form, he's schooled nicely. It's a hot race, but there aren't that many runners," said the Nicholashayne handler.

"It's a nice introduction for him. We're looking forward to it."

Fingal Bay was a classy staying novice hurdler for the Philip Hobbs team last season and got off the mark over fences at Chepstow five weeks ago.

"I'm looking forward to it. It was nice he won the last day and hopefully he will run well again," said his rider Richard Johnson.

"He was good first time out and hopefully he well run very well again. He seems in good form."

Jonjo O'Neill expects Thehillofuisneach to show improvement from his chasing bow at Exeter last month, his first run since the Festival in March.

The fences went up on campus bridges over Spring Break of 2010. Those Cornellians on campus at the time will never forget the way the campus transformed over those couple of months after the suicides. Members of the community came together to support one another. Professors gave students a rare break. Students chalked supportive messages to peers on the bridges, and Cornell added counselor positions at Gannett.

Like at any other university, students come and go, and the University, collectively, forgets. The only unavoidable reminders of the deaths that stunned the campus in March 2010 are the black fences lining the bridges. Those fences, however, will begin to come down over winter break. Walking across the bridges every day, you might completely forget about everything that happened. You will only be able to see the nets if you go out of your way to stop, lean your head over the bridge railing and look down.

It is important that we do not forget what happened on campus. Now that the national medias attention has diverted its focus and students have moved forward, the pressure to improve mental health on campus has eased. We must not allow ourselves to settle into complacency. Cornell needs to continue pushing forward the mental health initiatives the campus needs.

In the immediate aftermath of the suicides, Cornell hired six new therapists through a $1 million increase in funding from the University and alumni donations. Additionally, Gannett moved quickly after these events to supplement other parts of its mental health framework. Cornell worked to educate students on the resources available to them, using methods like the Real Students, Reel Stories video shown to incoming freshmen starting in 2010. In addition, it has worked to train faculty and staff on how to identify struggling students through its Notice and Respond program. Everything that we have seen from Cornell has been positive, but it cannot stop here.

Cornell now faces a serious challenge in finding a permanent source of funding for the counseling positions it added in 2011. Gannetts mental health promotion efforts have successfully driven students to seek help when they need it; now, Cornell must fill this increased demand. Even with the million dollars, Gannett is only able to accommodate counseling appointments for those students who most urgently need them, using a triaging system that works to serve high-risk students first. It is not enough to only prioritize students when they are in serious need of help.

One proposal to fill the funding gap is to levy a health fee. This fee would eliminate per-use fees for health services that some students are forced to pay and bolster funding for mental health programs. While we understand that a fee such as this would inevitably lead to higher financial aid costs for the University, the University should be working to reallocate resources and make funding Gannett a priority. A healthy campus is something worth paying for.

After the nets are completed and the fences are taken down, Cornell cannot allow this funding to disappear quietly. There are still serious issues on this campus that need to be addressed, and we hope that both students and administrators will continue to maintain the focus on these important initiatives.
