Privacy fence receives OK for River Islands homes backing up to levee – Manteca Bulletin - September 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Residents in the Lakeside East district of River Islands that have homes that back up to the levee are about to have a whole lot more privacy.

In a special meeting last month, the Lathrop Planning Commission approved an architectural design change to the development that will allow for River Islands to install a 6-foot fence along the back of properties that abut the San Joaquin River levee the top three feet of which will be latticed to allow for better visibility.

The location and design of the fence was developed in coordination with River Islands, city staff, and Lathrop Police Services as way of incorporating Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design components (CPTED) such as the lattice that allows for visibility and surveillance along the trail.

The current plans call for the fence to be installed at the top of the slope of the levee which will give homeowners with properties adjacent to the levees which have been reinforced to provide even more than the 200-year flood protection mandated by the State of California a more pleasing aesthetic to their backyards and removing any dead space between the properties and fenced off areas.

The existing fence is already located at the bottom of the interior levee, but the change to the existing architectural agreement will move the fence to the top of the interior side of the levee giving homeowners more privacy while at the same time still allowing for them to see what is happening on the levee.

Everything between the recently-approved fence, when installed, and the home will be the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain.

The issue came to light when Lathrop city staff recently processed a residential development for Village S by Lennar Homes who had placed the fence in plans at the top of the levee as opposed to where it had been in previous developments along the same topography. When Lennar formally requested that the change be made, other entities such as the Stewart Tract Design Review Committee signed off on the change before it was forwarded to the planning commission for its consideration.

San Antonio’s "Love Lock Fence" will be moved next week – 550 KTSA - September 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Photo: Elizabeth Ruiz/KTSA News

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) A downtown landmark that is popular with newlyweds is getting a new address.but its just temporary and not too far from the old one.

A few years back, couples who tied the knot at the downtown Courthouse Wedding Chapel started going over to whats now known as the Love Lock Fence between the Kallison Walk Bridge and Market Street.

They place a lock on the fence then throw the key into the San Antonio River.

But city engineers have discovered some cracks and erosion under the walkway near the fence and it needs to be repaired.

So whats going to happen to the Love Lock Fence while the work is being done?

The city doesnt want to mess with tradition so theyre just going to move it around the corner to the Kallison Walk Bridge. Once the repairs are made the fence, locks and all, will be moved back to its original location.

The project starts September 8th and at this point there is no time table for its completion.

Hopkins County Sheriffs Office deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Hopkins County and Arbala firefighters were dispatched at 12:21 a.m. Sept. 9 to FM 1567 west in Arbala, where a vehicle was reported to have struck a house.

Upon arrival, DPS troopers reported seeing a black truck with major damage in the front yard of a FM 1567 residence. The trooper reported the Chevrolet 1500 appeared to have been traveling eastbound. The driver reportedly went off the north side of the road, according to the DPS report. The truck after traveling through what was reported by deputies to be a flooded ditch, then a barbed wire fence. The front of the truck then struck a tree, according to DPS reports. On the prowl – Lone Peak Lookout - September 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tim Bo Tim Pattison has faced many grizzly bears in his 45 years of hunting and picking up antlers around Big Sky. His foot was once in a sow grizzlys mouth after he climbed a tree to try to get away from her when she tried to pull him down.

We were picking up antlers. I heard one buddy yell, Bear! My one buddy was screaming. I tried to climb up in a tree and kicked her. She let me go. Shes probably still got a headache. It was a total adrenaline kick with heavy duty hiking boots, he said. I would probably be a bear turd if I were wearing tennis shoes.

The friend who provided the warning laid down. She went to him and bit his side.

He got 22 stitches, Pattison said.

He describes bear encounters as part of the job hazard of picking up antlers and hunting in the mountains. In all, he has been treed seven times by grizzly bears and had his hunting camps destroyed a few times.

Lance and Terry Thomas (also known as Bo Lance and Bo Terry) have had legendaryhunting camps in the area since 1980. Lance describes grizzly bear incidents ranging from comical to ingenius to terrifying.

Bear fences are often extended around hunting camps and put out thousands of volts, according to Lance.

The fence was up for three or four days. This bear touched his nose to that fence and Im not kidding he jumped 20 feet up in the air and ran as far as he could, he said.

Another time, his brother Terry shot an elk with a foot of snow on the ground. It was growing dark and he knew he would not have time to safely pack the elk out. So, he did the usual hunting procedure in such a situation hung the quarters up in a tree and went back the next day. One quarter was gone.

That bear must have chewed the rope, dropped the quarter, picked it up and walked off with it, Lance said. Five of us went back the next day, grabbed the three quarters real quick and got the hell out of there.

The brothers have lost a lot of elk to grizzly bears over the years.

After field dressing a kill and leaving for only a few minutes, they once returned to a grizzly devouring the hind quarters. They tried to get him away from their elk and he refused.

Im tellin you, those bears aint nothing to mess with, he said.

Gallatin County Sheriff s Search and Rescue (GCSSAR) Big Sky assisted a hunter on Sept. 7 who believes he accidentally trekked too close to a gut pile five miles out from Ousel Falls one that was fiercely defended by a grizzly sow with her cubs.

After sustaining injuries to his shoulder and hip, the hunter was able to call for help and walked out under his own power, with the assistance of a GCSSAR Big Sky volunteer, who supported him physically and emotionally down the trail to get him to a medic, GCSSAR Commander Scott Secor said. The message that we are really trying to send out is the awareness to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Around any corner could be an animal willing to defend its food source.

This is a time of year when an uptick in bear encounters is typically seen, according to Information Bureau Chief of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Greg Lemon.

The nature of archery hunting is in direct conflict with how to best handle yourself in grizzly bear country, he said. We tell recreationists to make noise, avoid a surprise encounter, but archery hunters are sneaking around the woods as part of hunting and are often making cow or bull elk sounds and that is risky in bear country.

Hunters need to have bear spray on them and be ready to use it not in their packs, but easily accessible. He shared Commander Secors thoughts on awareness.

Lemon stressed that all hunters, particularly archery hunters, need to be looking for tracks, rolled over rocks, scat, or torn-up logs. Ravens, crows, or magpies concentrated in an area are a big tip-off to a carcass. It can be incredibly easy to unknowingly stumble into a threatening situation this time of year.

If you werent out there when an animal was harvested, you might not know that you are in the space that would cause an attack that there is a carcass out there, he said. This time is always a little more dangerous for people out in the woods. There are going to be carcasses out in the woods as hunters are successful. This makes every piece of grizzly bear awareness that much more important, he reiterated.

Across the Fence: Rain – The Suburban Times - September 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

As Im writing this, it is Sunday afternoon. It feels like an early fall day already. Its brown meadow season with bright blue skies, hardly a cloud, eye-popping flower colors, and a mellowness of air that betrays that the hottest days this year are over. My head feels dizzy, and Im looking at Mt. Rainier for the umptieth time these past days. No lenticular cloud no weather change. But my body tells me we are in for rain. Or was it just the past sleepless nights that take their toll on me?

Rain. As a child I simply hated it because usually it meant disrupting outdoor playtime. As a teenager, though, I started embracing it. I guess, its because my mother taught me how to use all my senses to experience Nature. And there is so much more to rain than just getting wet. Even the stages of getting wet can be so different. Have you ever experienced horizontal rain on a beach? Or bicycling through it, while somebody up in the sky has decided that its time for another shower today down to your skin? The soft caressing of drizzle in a face that doesnt have to fear running mascara (anymore)?

Or just observe how it starts raining. There might be even a moment of almost breathless silence before the first drop splashes down on a leaf that ducks under the sudden pressure; on your hand from which it immediately evaporates as if it never happened; on your driveway where it widens as if to reach out to another drop to unite and color the entire asphalt area a darker hue. Maybe, the drops are invisible at first, then they become bigger, until they are pelting down, and it seems like a white curtain has been drawn across your backyard. They might even splash back upward on the road as if they were jumping on a trampoline. And they build up pools in the ditches where later the sky will see its own reflection.

Also, I find there is no more soothing sound then the rush of rain. Not even the sea or a bubbling brook is as calming. Have you ever fallen asleep to rain with your window open?

And then, the fragrance that comes with rain. Its as if it were unlocking an entire cabinet of aromas while its falling and afterwards. Theres the smell of freshly mown grass that gains a totally new quality of herbal and sweet. The bitter-sweet, almost taste-like scent of wet brick and asphalt, the earthy smell of a wet beach, the cold-smoke fragrance of wet wood, the infinitely sweet and pungent smell of a forest after the rain.

I remember sitting with my sweetheart and his best man under the canopy of my balcony two days before my wedding, when a sudden cloudburst made us flee inside. Or how many hiking tours in my childhood and youth seemed to be ended by a race against darkly looming clouds. These moments of surprise or of an almost sporty competition wholl make it to the car first the rain or me?

Its strange how these days I crave a good rainfall, no matter which time of day. After all, we didnt have much of a spring other than this cool, dark-gray wetness here in Washington State, and our summer this year hasnt had more than a weeks worth of real summer days. Even our gardens harvest will fail us this year because we could plant only comparatively late, and then there was a lack of nourishing sunlight. (If any of you guys has a good recipe for green tomatoes )

Even music has made much of rain. Have you ever heard the French chanson Sous le ciel de Paris? It describes Parisian life and how it gets interrupted by a shower. Theres Rain drops are falling on my head and November Rain, there are Totos Africa and Led Zeppelins Rain Song, even Beethovens symphony Pastorale describes a rain storm. But the song that comes to my mind first, is one of the first rain songs I ever learned, a call to harvesters to get the grain in as rain is looming; heres a link: youtu.be/ne__mIBETt8

You see, rain is certainly something you can learn to embrace. Especially when it comes in a balanced way not too much, not too often, not for too long. Right now, I could do with some birdsong after a good, hard shower and maybe a rainbow in the sky.

It’s Been Exactly 30 Years Since Garth Brooks Released No Fences – CMT.com - September 1, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    by Alison Bonaguro 8/27/2020

Let that sink in a little. Thirty years ago today, on Aug. 27, 1990, Garth Brooks released his second studio album No Fences.

And by now, its 100 percent obvious that there was never any kind of sophomore slump for Brooks.

Quite the opposite, in fact. That album from 1990 won him the Academy of Country Musics album of the year award, and when Brooks accepted the award and thanked his team and his pickers he also thanked the fans. Most of all, the people who bought this album, man, hed said, thanks for spending your money.

I picked the album title No Fences because once you hear The Thunder Rolls into New Way to Fly, Friends in Low Places, Mr. Blue, Unanswered Prayers, Wolves, it just became clear that this record had no boundaries, and, as much as we could guess, the future was whatever the music wanted it to be. We were beginning to feel that, really, there were no fences, Brooks wrote, and wed be fools to put any up.

All you knew was, Man, theres some thing about this record that makes me pull for it. Something about it that makes me want to hear it again. I just know thats how it hit me.

Brooks also tells the story of his now-signature hit Friends in Low Places. How George Strait had passed on it, how Mark Chestnutt was about to cut it, but how Brooks had always thought of it as his song because hed been singing it at shows for years. (Ultimately, Chestnutt did record the song for his 1990 album Too Cold at Home, but never released it as a single.)

Once Brooks released the song, he recalls driving home from a recording session at 2:00 in the morning, listening to the radio, and the DJ saying, In my entire career, Ive never had so many requests for one song. This has to be the most-requested song Ive ever known.

Im yelling, Ive got my hands up in the air. We are on a ride that, Brooks admitted, we have no idea. We didnt have a real sense for what was getting ready to happen, none of us did.

The songs from No Fences were some of Brooks very biggest hits, and they still are today. Even the deep cuts have been fan favorites at his live shows since 1990.

    No Fences track list:

1.The Thunder Rolls (Garth Brooks, Pat Alger)2.New Way To Fly (Brooks, Kim Williams)3.Two of a Kind, Workin on a Full House (Bobby Boyd, Warren Haynes, Dennis Robbins)4.Victim of the Game (Brooks, Mark D. Sanders)5.Friends in Low Places(DeWayne Blackwell, Earl Bud Lee)6.Wild Horses (Bill Shore, David Wills)7.Unanswered Prayers (Brooks, Alger, Larry Bastian)8.Same Old Story (Tony Arata)9.Mr. Blue (Blackwell)10.Wolves (Stephanie Davis)

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
