Sunday was Christmas-tree day at the Watsons. We were hoping for sunshine. Instead, it was misting rain. There were low places on the way to Pine Hill Farms where the mist was as thick as gauze. The soles of my shoes squished in parking-lot mud, but our spirits lifted when we saw a stand of ice-blue cedars among the Christmas trees. We knew our tree was there.

For years, we bought our trees from Mr. Frye, who owned a Christmas tree farm near Burrows Crossing. When he decided to retire, it broke our hearts. We did some research and found Pine Hill Farms near Fultondale. Since then, its been our go-to place for trees. Thats where we bought our first ice-blue cedar last year.

We have a forest of Leyland Cyprus trees in our yard that are now taller than the power lines. Last year we wanted something different. We saw a lonely blue ice cedar. Jilda walked around it several times, examining the color and smelling branches. It was a little smaller than the trees we had chosen in the past, but this little tree resonated with both of us, so we bought it.

This year there were several ice-blues, and they were larger than last years trees. We squished over acres of trees before going back to the first tree we saw when we pulled up. Jilda stood guard by the tree while I went inside to settle up with the cashier.

An older gentleman at the tree farm who could have doubled as Santa helped us. He sent two young guys hustling down to dig up the tree.

Santa guy started giving me instructions on setting up and caring for a live tree. Jilda and I both listened politely. When he paused, we told him wed planted our last 35 Christmas trees. It took a moment for that to sink in with him. He smiled and said, Ill get the kids to load it for you.

Its a beautiful little tree. After Christmas, well find the right place on the farm where it fits and adds to the Feng shui and what not.

On Friday, I fetched the tree decorations that we store in the barn. Again, it was rainy, but Jilda made a pot of her world-famous hot-apple cider, and we listened to Christmas music while decorating the tree.

Jilda fell into a Zen-ish place while she worked on the tree. Ive learned not to talk during this delicate phase of decoration. Each bulb, icicles and crystal angel have a place on the tree. Only my lovely spouse knows that location. My job is to fetch ornaments. This requires that I interpret grunts and other guttural sounds. Its a process that works for us.

After decorating the tree, we went for a walk to stretch our legs. During the walk, I saw a small bush in the underbrush that provided a Christmas deja vu experience.

Just off our walking path was a small thorny bush. It was the same kind of bush that I cut for my mama each Christmas when I was in grammar school. That was over 50 years ago.

Mama filled the lard can with dirt for a makeshift gumdrop-tree stand. On each of the thorns, she stuck a sugary gumdrop. The candy turned the gnarly little bush into a thing of beauty each Christmas.

When I showed Jilda the small thorn bush and told her about our gumdrop trees at Christmas, she said that her Maw-Maw Mamie made those each year, too.

Today, after I pick up some gumdrops, well start having one, too.

Forefficiency's sake, it's never practical to have two work stations situated back-to-back. This is why many kitchen experts suggest a triangular set up between the fridge, stove, and sink. But Benko says there is also feng shui reasoning behind it: "There can be a conflict in the house when you have fire right across from waterwater puts out fire."

The Solution:If you have that configuration in your kitchen, no need to gut renovate just yet. Instead, put a wood element between the sink and stovewater feeds wood, and wood feeds fire. If the garage is attached to the home, you need to include it in the layout. Some homes have extensions or missing sections when putting the Ba-Gua over the layout.

Feng Shui has cures which can re-energize or enhance these sections. Each side of the Ba-Gua also represents a different element (water, earth, etc.), as well as color, and these are things which we can keep in mind when decorating our home.

Once any Sha has been identified, you can apply feng shui remedies and cures which will eliminate negative energy flow. And use your speech by chanting a prayer, affirmation or mantra nine times. (the number 9 is important in Feng Shui). The Master Thomas Lin-Yun believes that by placing a Feng Shui cure in an area, you improve the area by 10%. But when it is reinforced with the Three Secrets, it is reinforced 120%.

The main entrance is an important area, and should be kept free of clutter and blockages. For instance, if there is a wall which blocks the rest of the house from view as you enter your home, this can block the flow of Chi, creating obstacles. Stand at your doorway, facing the interior.

How does it feel? Are there obstructions? Is there a stairway or column? Is there anything pointed facing the door (such as a desk or wall on an angle). Move what you can, and soften the unmovable aggressive corners with plants or fabric hangings.

Or you can put up a cool folding screenfold it into a cup shape so that the corners will not create negative energy. The front part of the Ba-Gua (therefore, the front part of your home) is associated with water.

When discovering which area of the home affects the different types of activities of our lives, we can do things which enhance and honor these areas.

Learn each section, along with the color and element associated with it. For instance, for a woman who is having trouble getting pregnant, first she would locate which area of her home represented children.

Then she could place white flowers in that room (being careful to remove all dead leaves and blossoms), hang a Feng Shui crystal, bring in metal wind chimes or add more light into that area. Cleaning out clutter, dusty items, and broken things from this room would be a great start in restoring more harmony, making it easier to conceive.

The outside of the home is also very important to consider. Homes which are on a bay are said to drain the energy of the occupants. Homes at the end of a dead-end street or cul-de-sac can affect your abundance, financially, physically and spiritually.

Dry plants or dead trees on your property are bad for health. When your home faces a T-intersection or a cemetery, it can block Chi. Many times, just the simple placement of an 8-sided mirror on the exterior of your house can bring great improvement.

Feng Shui is a sacred philosophy, and should be practiced in a respectful way. If you are going to use its methods, be serious about it, rather than taking a light-hearted, humorous approach.

The intention you put behind your actions is very important, so use a very positive and hopeful energy as you apply Feng Shui cures. Start simple. Tackle the area which represents what is most urgent in your life right now, taking it a step at a time, and as you see results, your energy is elevated. Feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of arranging living spaces, is based on many of the same principles as alternative medicine therapies such as acupuncture. The point of feng shui is to maximize the flow of "qi" (energy or life force) in the environment for utmost safety and productivity.

Being thoughtful about how you arrange and use your bedroom is especially important. It's where you sleep, and adequate amounts of quality shut-eye are vital to health and well-being. If you share your home with a spouse or partner, note that a bedroom with good feng shui is thought to strengthen the bond between a couple and attract love. So for the sake of better sleep and a boost to your relationship, consider these tips for improving the feng shui in your bedroom.

The ideal bed placement allows you to see the bedroom door while you're in bed without being directly in front of or in line with it. According to feng shui, having a view of the door from bed without being too close to it gives a sense of safety and is conducive to relaxation and sleep.

The foot of the bed shouldn't point toward the door either. This is known as the "coffin" position and putsthe bed in the main path of traffic. If this can't be avoided, a footboard, high bench, or table at the foot of the bed can act as a buffer as long as it doesn't block the view of the door.

The head of the bed should be against a wall, but not under a window which could allow qi to flow outside and cause restless sleep. It's best not to place a bed under a structural or decorative beam or ceiling fan either, as this is good for neither physical health nor relationships. If moving your bed isn't an option, feng shui practitioners sometimes recommend hanging a bamboo flute (a special feng shui device) from the beam or fan to offset the effects.

If there are two people sleeping in the bed, there should be equal space on both sides of it so each person can get into and out of bed easily.

Televisions, computers, exercise gear, or a workspace in the bedroom are thought to distract from rest, symbolize wakefulness, and take up energy. If you have no choice, hide such items as best you can: Place the TV in an armoire or neatly cover it with a cloth, for example, or set up a screen to block your view of that exercise bike or desk.

According to feng shui, clutter is more than a distracting eyesore: It can block the flow of qi, disturb sleep, and generally prevent things in your life from moving forward.

Neatness counts where you can't see it as well: Don't use the space under your bed for storage and keep the inside of your closet tidy and weed out clothes you don't wear periodically. Close the closet door at night. Keep the insides of drawers organized and don't pile books on top of your nightstand or dresser.

According to feng shui, if you aren't sleeping well, a mirror in your bedroom could be the culprit. Mirrors are thought to bounce energy around the bedroom, which may result in restlessness. They're also said to amplify worries.

It's especially important not to hang a mirror on the wall opposite your bed. Feng shui consultants say this can promote the intrusion of a third party into a couple's relationship and possibly encourage infidelity.

Any images you hang on your bedroom walls should be inspiring, uplighting, or relaxing. One of the best places to hang such an image is on the wall opposite your bed so that you see it first thing when youwake up and the last thing before you turn off the lights to go to sleep. Don't bring sad or upsetting images into your bedroom, or paintings or photographs that feature just one person: This symbolizes solitude. It's also best to avoid images in which a lake, waterfall, or river is the dominant theme. In other parts of the house, water symbolizes money but in the bedroom, it may promote financial or relationship losses.

In general, try tohave two of everything you can. Couples should have two (ideally) identical nightstands (one on each side of the bed), for example. Ovals and circles, whether it's the shape of your nightstand or the type of accessories you select, are better than furniture and accessories with sharp corners or edges.

According to feng shui, warm colors reminiscent of skin tones, such as cream, peach, beige, yellow, coral, tan or cocoa, are ideal on bedroom walls because they're thought to be soothing.

Light blues, greens, and lavenders are considered restful and conducive to sleep. But too many cool colors, such as grays, blues, or stark whites are believed to interfere with relaxation. Aim for a balance of 50 percent warm skin tones and 50 percent cool blues, greens, or lavenders.
