Growing renown as an expert in Feng Shui, a thriving consultancy and a bestselling book may count as achievements of a lifetime; but for KS Vishnu Das it has all come at just 16 years of age, with what he believes is the power of the ancient Chinese art he practices. At his stall in the GKSF Global Village Consumer Pavilion, surrounded by the instruments used in Feng Shui, Vishnu, a Class XII student at the Kaloor Model Technical Higher Secondary School, speaks about the positive energy that has filled and transformed his life. He learnt the basics of the art as a youngster from his father KS Sivaprasad, an aquamarine trainer who runs a Feng Shui cum Aqua store in the city. So drawn to the art was he, that when most children his age occupied themselves with schoolbooks and in the playground, he trawled through the internet and literature on the subject to understand the depths of Feng Shui. The result was a book titled "Feng Shui: The Art of Living In Harmony With Your Environment". Vishnu was a Class X student when it was published and it changed his life. Hailed by many, including renowned writer/orator Dr Sukumar Azhikode as a first-rate book on the subject, the volume got multiple reprints within a short span and went on to become a bestseller at the Kochi International Book Festival.

Today I took some time off from the office to head for the Mandarin Oriental for lunch with Master Joseph Chau, one of the foremost specialists on feng shui, at Tin Hau.

Tin Hau is incidentally one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Manila, although I never go often enough, amidst my never-endingly eventful Travelife.

EATING FOR PROSPERITY

And I certainly ate with gusto even if I actually have a very nice and big dinner coming up tonight at the Old Manila restaurant of the Peninsula Manila with some good friends, including the Ambassador of Australia.

Greg Doyle, one of Australia's top chefs, is cooking us a feast tonight.

INGREDIENTS FOR SUCCESS

We started with an appetizer trio that's traditionally served for Chinese New Year.

This included jelly fish marinated in the Szechuan style, Peking duck rolls and Ngo Hiang rolls served in the Fujian style. I especially liked the Ngo Hiang rolls, which tasted somewhat like meat loaf.

Then we had a soup of braised assorted seafood with crab roe and tofu, followed by wok-fried prawns with X.O. sauce.

Feng shui "experts" have been so coming out of the woodwork it's unbelievable! How many of them can be believed if they don't know how to read the ephemeris (in Mandarin) that tracks the movements of planets?

One practitioner who tugs a long string of heavyweight clients - bankers, developers, architects and designers - has been in the business 20 years but keeps a low profile in spite of his fame within that limited but influential circle, such as the owners of the Rockwell projects. He also happens to be an MD, and he sees ghosts, labeling himself a G.R.O. (ghost relations officer). Some of those ghosts he claims to have seen coming out of a large mirror in Malacaang - they were Katipuneros who didn't think the revolution had come to an end.

"Where do you send the spirits that you encounter?" we asked him over lunch at Toni Lo's LRI Plaza. It was the first time Dr. Andy Tan, 50, of Chinatown Manila, wearing a wispy goatee and a rat tail, sat down with journalists, and did he have tales to tell!

"You cannot send them away," he said, "you can only counsel them, like informing them the revolution has long been over."

Dr. Tan met the press to give a preview of the feng shui talk that LRI (on Nicanor Garcia st. in Makati) has set up for Feb. 7. "Just the basics," he said, which ought to interest those who have heard so much about feng shui even if what they've heard is wrong, deceitful and outrightly fraudulent. Feng shui is not about little mirrors to drive away bad spirits, it's not fortune-telling and placing lions and unicorns to "guard the main door," and it's not for snake-oil salesmen to pull the wool over their unsuspecting customers' eyes.

Feng shui may be a science but it works in mysterious ways. Sometimes, a project with everything going for it - first-class talents, materials, marketing - will refuse to take off until wind-water "cures" are applied and then voila, there it goes, it flies! But who can explain it?
