ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Since 1983, Beachcliff Market Square has been providing a smaller type of shopping mecca in Rocky River. The 110,000-square-foot, three-sided shopping center at the corner of Detroit and Wooster roads continues to pull in shoppers year round for many products and services.

The plaza is a mixed-use, open-air center. There used to be an indoor section of stores, but the profile changed when some restaurants took over those spaces. Burntwood Tavern is just one of them.

Today, the center -- whose slogan is Extraordinary is our style -- offers shopping, dining, health and wellness, and other services.

Making an extraordinary splash recently was a surprising new tenant, The Goddard School -- an unusual business to find in a shopping plaza. But manager Bill Brink explains why it is a good match.

The Goddard School opened Oct. 1, said Brink. Its the only one of their schools that is not freestanding. In Rocky River, it was getting hard for them to find a freestanding building when they needed 12,000 square feet.

Another business wanted only 5,000 square feet and couldnt find that, either.

The Goddard School needed a new space due to an increase in enrollment. Even their Westlake school had a waiting list.

I know someone, said Brink, who had a 2-year-old and was on a waiting list for 16 months.

For those who may have not been to Beachcliff Market Square, there is a large parking lot right in front of all the stores -- no long walks to your car when you shop there. And there is also a parking garage.

The Goddard School requires parents to park, come in, then sign in, in order to pick up their kids, said Brink. The parking garage is right below the school, so it offers no weather problems and its very convenient -- a perfect use of space.

But there is another reason Brink is happy with the arrangement: Parents can drop off the kids, then have breakfast, go work out or go shopping -- all right here.

Brink can rattle off the names of all the stores, services and restaurants. Some newer additions include Milan Hair Laser Removal Clinic, as well as Hand and Stone Massage. They join some of the long-lasting businesses like Planet Fitness, Erie Island Coffee and Girl Got Swing, which offers golf equipment and apparel for women.

Others include Smiles by White, West Side Preventative Eyecare, El Pita Mediterranean Cuisine, Francescas Boutique, Ann Taylor Loft, dentist Scott Shapiros Beachcliff Family Dentistry and a Cleveland Clinic family practice.

We have been blessed with a good mix of retail, services and restaurants, said Brink. It makes for a nice mix.

It's rare that things go well in 2020, and also that construction projects stay on time and on budget, but the two of those things have come together for the Estevan Police Service's station expansion with just over a month to go before things are completed.

The project is on time to finish by its projected to finish date of January 22, but won't be functional right away. According to Police Chief Paul Ladouceur, the project has been going on generally uninterrupted.

"The crews have advised us that it appears to be on schedule. Some of the stuff can be weather dependant but everything has been going very smoothly. With projects of this size, oftenyou'll come intospeedbumps along the way but it's actually gone very smoothly. It will be a welcome addition to this facility and carry us long into the future."

On the note of longevity, the new expansion isn't just set to be in use for a short time, but rather will be able to last through additions of more staff throughout theyears to come.

"One of the big things with this project is that it was designed with the ability for expansion within the facility itself. There were floor plans put in place where there could be future cubicles put in so I think this building is going to serve this community for years to come."

Once the construction of the project is done, it is still going to take some time before the police station is completely moved over. There are so many different files in different places, some where roof tiles have been moved to make sure there is room for them, some are being stored in the station's garage, and enough furniture and offices to move over that it will take a couple of months.

"Realistically I think we'll be settled on that side by March of 2021 by the time everything is moved over and we're up and running. Completion is still set for January 22 but you probably won't see us operational until March."

COVID 19 has not seemed to play a factor in construction even though it started up around the same time as the pandemic. Police staff and construction workers have been able tostay distanced apart for the entirety of the project.

The Snapdragon 888 system-on-chip unveiled by Qualcomm this week should deliver a noticeable performance boost to next year's flagship Android phones. After all, this is Qualcomm's first 5-nanometer chip, meaning more transistors providing more power with greater efficiency. But that's not the story Qualcomm is dwelling on, as it talks up the merits of its latest mobile processing platform.

Instead, much of Qualcomm's focus with the Snapdragon 888 is to talk about how new additions to the chipset will improve your mobile photography and mobile gaming experiences the kind of thing you're more likely to notice than whether an app launched a little bit faster on one phone or another.

Think of it as Qualcomm's way of distinguishing itself from the A14 Bionic that powers Apple's latest phones or the Kirin silicon Huawei uses in its phones. Qualcomm doesn't mention any of its chip-making rivals by name. But the way it's presenting the Snapdragon 888 speaks volumes about the experiences it thinks phones powered by the new chip can provide.

Here's what you can expect from the Snapdragon 888 and when the new system-on-chip will start appearing in smartphones.

Qualcomm says its Snapdragon 888 chipset is coming to Android phones in 2021, though it hasn't said exactly when. If past releases are any indication, though, you can expect the new chip to start appearing in leading Android phones during the first three months of the new year.

Samsung's next flagship will almost certainly be one of the first phones to sport a Snapdragon 888, as has been the case for the U.S. versions of all Galaxy S releases. That would put the new chip on track for the Samsung Galaxy S21, which is rumored to be launching earlier than usual possibly as soon as January.

But Samsung will have company. At Qualcomm's annual tech summit where the Snapdragon 888 was introduced, Xiaomi said its Mi 11 phone will be one of the first to get Qualcomm's latest chip, though that phone is unlikely to ever reach the U.S.

Qualcomm doesn't make announcements about which devices use its silicon, but the chip maker did provide a list of phone makers who've pledge to support the Snapdragon 888. Beside Xiaomi, that list includes Asus, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, MEIZU, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Vivo and ZTE.

Performance may not be one of the major talking points around the Snapdragon 888's launch, but you should still expect big gains for the devices that use the chipset next year. As noted above, this is Qualcomm's first chip using a 5nm process, and that typically means greater power and efficiency.

Qualcomm's also come up with a new architecture for the chip, which will offer the first commercial CPU subsystem to be based on the Arm Cortex-X1. In addition to that prime CPU, which can top out at up to 2.84GHz, three Arm Cortex A-78 CPUs make up the performance cores, while four Arm Cortex-A55 comprise the efficiency cores.

In terms of performance numbers, Qualcomm says that the Kryo 680 in the Snapdragon 888 can deliver a 25% boost in overall CPU performance over the previous generation. The new CPU is 25% more power efficient than its predecessor, according to Qualcomm.

We'll need to benchmark a device powered by the Snapdragon 888 to see how that compares to current phones on the market. But a back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that the chip will deliver a 25% boost over the Geekbench scores of some of the fastest Snapdragon 865-based phones we've tested. And that would pull it just about even with Apple's pace-setting A14-powered iPhone 12 lineup.

Qualcomm would counter that its chips are designed for sustained performance and not the short bursts that can propel phones to the lead of benchmark tests a not so subtle dig at Apple's processors.

"Snapdragon is constructed for sustainable, usable performance," said Ziad Asghar, a vice president of product management at Qualcomm, during the Snapdragon 888 unveiling. We're looking forward to getting our hands on a Snapdragon 888 device to see if reality matches our math.

As for graphics, the Adreno 660 GPU included with the Snapdragon 888 is supposed to increase the speed of graphics rendering by 35% over last year's chip, with power efficiency improving by 20%. The performance gain is the biggest yet for the Adreno GPU, Qualcomm says, which bodes well for gaming on Snapdragon 888 phones.

Enhancement to the GPU also impact how graphics are displayed, with Qualcomm promising OLED display uniformity as well as picture quality improvements.

5G continues to be a major focus of Qualcomm, so you can bet that it's a key part of the Snapdragon 888 story. The new system-on-chip includes an integrated modem, much like last year's Snapdragon 765G. Only this time, the modem is Qualcomm's 3rd generation Snapdragon X60 modem, which supports both sub-6GHz carrier aggregation and mmWave. That means a Snapdragon 888-powered phone will work with just about any operator's 5G network, including those that use dynamic spectrum sharing to extend 5G connectivity.

You should enjoy fast data speeds with the Snapdragon 888, at least where high-speed connectivity is available. The X60 is capable of 7.5 Gbps speeds. No 5G network is even close to delivering that right now, but it's nice to know that there's plenty of headroom for your phone's 5G performance as networks get faster.

One of the more intriguing parts of the Snapdragon 888's 5G support is the fact that it supports Global 5G multi-SIM, meaning you can expect 5G to extend to international roaming at least if we're ever able to leave our houses again. 5G multi-SIM support also means that you can have separate numbers on the same phone.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipsets power photographic features, too, and the enhancements introduced to the Spectra 580 image signal processor (ISP) are particularly noteworthy.

For the first time, Qualcomm's offering a triple ISP that can capture images from three cameras at the same time; on previous Snapdragon Series 8 chipsets, Qualcomm had used a dual ISP.

The switch to a triple ISP means being able to simultaneous snap a trio of 28MP shots, all from different points of view. Or you could capture three 4K videos all once for a wide shot, a close up and a shot of the person doing the filming from the front camera. Thanks to triple concurrency, all cameras can run in the background at the same time, so that you can seamlessly switch between lenses without a noticeable lag.

The Spectra ISP is getting a speed boost of its own with the Snapdragon 888. Qualcomm promises speeds of 2.7 gigapixels per second, which is 35% faster than the Snapdragon 865's ISP. In one second, you'll be able to capture a burst of 120 photos.

In another first for Qualcomm's chips, the Snapdragon 888 can capture photos in 10-bit HDR HEIF. That allows cameras powered by the Spectra ISP to capture photos in more than one billion shades of color, enabling end-to-end 10-bit capture and display. Previously, the Snapdragon 8 Series' ISP could support 4K still image capture, and now that's being extended to video capture with the Snapdragon 888.

Cameras on Snapdragon 888 phones should also be more adept when the lights are turned low, as the chipset introduces a new low-light architecture. That should allow the camera to work in 0.1 lux, which a Qualcomm rep described as near darkness.

More people are playing mobile games, and Qualcomm's responded by ramping up the Snapdragon Elite Gaming features it includes with its high-end processors. That's Qualcomm's push to bring desktop-quality gaming to mobile, and in the past it's introduced capabilities such as desktop forward rendering for improved lighting and updateable GPU drivers.

In addition to supporting ultra smooth gaming capable of delivering gameplay at 144 frames per second, the Snapdragon 888 also adds variable rate shading for improved game rendering. That's a first for mobile devices, according to Qualcomm, and when it's implemented by game makers, it should boost gameplay performance by 30%. That means games will run smoother and longer without taxing your phone's battery as much.

Most games on your smartphone rely on a touchscreen interface to control the action, so Qualcomm is introducing a way to make your touches count. The company's Game Quick Touch feature can improve responsiveness by up to 20% in games running at 60 frames per second; in 120 fps games, response tims are cut by 10%.

In addition to all the other components on a Snapdragon 8 series chipset, you'll also find an AI engine that impacts multiple tasks across a smartphone. The Snapdragon 888 introduces a new 6th-generation AI Engine along with a Hexagon 780 processor that's more efficient and powerful than previous versions.

Many of the improvements to the Snapdragon 888's AI engine can be traced to a new architecture Qualcomm is using. The Tensor, Scalar and Vector AI accelerators have been fused in this version, allowing them to work together as one unit so they can share memory for faster performance.

That promises a number of benefits for AI-powered features. The Tensor Accelerator's Compute capacity has doubled, while the Scalar Accelerator is 50% more powerful. Qualcomm says you can expect up to a 3x performance per watt improvement from its last mobile processing platform, with the AI engine able to perform 26 tera operations per second (TOPS). For context, the Snapdragon 865 provided 15 TOPS, which was pretty impressive when it was introduced a year ago.

All of this translates to a more responsive device when it comes to working with the camera, voice assistant and any other part of the phone where responsiveness is key. The AI engine on the Snapdragon 888 can provide capabilities like noise suppression when you're on a phone call to cancel out ambient noise around you or AI-based upscaling on videos so that you can watch them at enhanced resolutions.

Last year's top-of-the-line Snapdragon chipset included a Qualcomm Sensing Hub to help with activities such as screen awake, lift and activity detection, and audio prompts. The Snapdragon 888 introduces the second generation version of that hub, with its own dedicated AI processor. That makes the revised Qualcomm Sensing Hub even more contextually aware of its surroundings.

A demo that Qualcomm showed off at its tech summit illustrated how the sensing hub could detect where you parked your car in a multi-level garage, all without any user input. The sensing hub can also detect different sounds like a baby crying and respond with an appropriate notification.

We've talked about 5G, but that's only part of the Snapdragon 888's connectivity capabilities. This is a Wi-Fi 6-enabled device, as you might expect, so it will connect efficiently to Wi-Fi 6-ready networking gear. The Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 mobile connectivity system can support wireless speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps.

On the security front, the Snapdragon 888 supports features such as a hypervisor that can quickly switch between isolated OSes on your phone. (Think setting up work and personal profiles on phones that keep apps and other data localized to specific profiles.) This is also the first Content Authenticity Initiative-compliant smartphone camera for capturing cryptographically-sealed photos.

Perhaps one of the more noteworthy enhancements brought about with the Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm's QuickCharge 5 technology. It's capable of supporting up to 100W chargers, with the promise of providing a 50% charge to a phone in 5 minutes. Even if your future phone doesn't recharge at that blistering speed, faster charging looks to be on the horizon with Snapdragon 888-powered devices that employ the latest version of QuickCharge.

While all those features give us an overview of what the Snapdragon 888 brings to the table, we're going to have to wait for a device powered by the new chip to fully appreciate its capabilities. Certainly, getting to test a Snapdragon 888-powered phone will let us compare Qualcomm's latest to the chips powering Apple's new phones.

But there's a lot to anticipate about the Snapdragon 888 beyond just speed improvements. The new camera capabilities in particular promise to push mobile photography forward, and the gaming features will further cement the smartphone's place as a device for serious gamers. Qualcomm has introduced a lot of key enhancements with the Snapdragon 888, and we're looking forward to see how that translates to new mobile experiences.

San Francisco is illuminated with over 40 dramatic, eco-friendly light art installations located throughout the city as part of the eighth edition of Illuminate SF Festival of Light.

Over the years, Illuminate SF Festival of Light has become increasingly popular with visitors and locals alike. This is the perfect activation for San Francisco this season where we can all view these marvels while staying safe, enjoy the new outdoor dining patios along the way and get some much-needed exercise with an evening stroll, said Brenda Tucker, director of arts marketing for the San Francisco Travel Association.

Illuminate SF Festival of Light and http://www.Illuminatesf.com are presented by the San Francisco Travel Association in collaboration with local civic, arts and cultural partners.

Located in 17 different neighborhoods, the works are accessible by public transport and most are free for all to view. From Thanksgiving 2020 through January 23rd, 2021, art lovers are invited to embrace the power of light and tour San Franciscos art installations by a diverse range of world famous artists like Jenny Holtzer, Joseph Kosuth, Leo Villareal, Hank Willis Thomas, Jim Campbell, Ivan Navarro and Johanna Grawunder. From SFO to the Salesforce Tower, and parking garage elevators to apartment buildings, our city is lighting up the night with stunning installations.

Notably, Golden Gate Park will host multiple installations this season in celebration of their 150th anniversary with Entwined in Peacock Meadow, Golden Gate Bandshell Spreckels Temple of Music, and the Observation Wheel, all new this year. Local artist Charles Gadekens whimsical wonderland Entwined will run December 10 through February 29 with a possible extension.

Each year San Francisco adds new permanent and temporary installations, explained Brenda Tucker.

This year, we are celebrating 5 new additions, including internationally renowned light artist Ivan Navarros first permanent site-specific public artwork, THE LADDER (Sun or Moon), at 1066 Market street. Another addition is Golden Gate Park's newly refurbished Spreckels Temple of Music, which now shifts between hues of red, yellow, and purple. It stands just across the Music Concourse from the temporary SkyStar Observation Wheel, itself adorned with over one-million colorful LED lights, she added.

The new, and already existing art installations are all included in the Illuminate SF Light Art Trail, a self-guided itinerary that includes 11 installations in neighborhoods like the Embarcadero, South of Market, Civic Center, Hayes Valley, the Castro, and the Bayview. The Light art trail has been developed by Brenda Tucker with the support of San Francisco Travels digital team. The physical map can be viewed, downloaded and printed out as needed. It is available on the companys website sftravel.com.

Sometimes extraordinary vehicles come from the least likely of places. Take, for instance, GMC. We can thank GMC for starting the high-performance SUV craze that was followed by the likes of BMW with the X5M, Porsche for the Cayenne and Macan, and Jeep with the astounding Track Hawk. General Motors started it all with the 1991-1993 GMC Typhoon.

The Pick of the Day is one of these groundbreaking vehicles, a 1993 GMC Typhoon, a two-owner truck that has covered just 37,300 miles from new and is a 100 percent garage-kept original, according to the Milford, Michigan, dealer advertising the Typhoon on ClassicCars.com.

The Typhoon was an offshoot of the GMC Syclone, a one-year version of the compact S10 pickup with serious high-performance additions. In an effort to expand the audience for this limited-production vehicle, the engineers and marketers decided to apply the same treatment to their S10 Jimmy SUV. The Typhoon was in production from 1991-1993.

Powered by a turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 that put out 280 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, the Typhoon covered 0-60 in a fast 5.3 seconds and the quarter mile in an equally rapid 14.1 seconds, according to testers at the time. Top speed was also impressive for the era at 124 mph.

Keep in mind that this was for an SUV that weighed 3,822 pounds. In comparison, a 1991 Ferrari 348 took 6 seconds to get to 60 and had a quarter-mile ET of 14.5 seconds.

Combine that with the fact that the Typhoon could seat four people comfortably and cost less that a quarter of the price of a Ferrari 348, and you have something quite interesting.

The Typhoon is being rediscovered in the collector car hobby, part of the appeal being the origin for all other high-performance SUVs that followed. They are also quite rare with only 4,687 built during the three years of production.

This Typhoon includes all books and manuals and is fully loaded with options, according to the seller. It is finished in solid Apple Red paint, one of only 77 produced in that color, the seller adds.

This collector-quality example is being offered for $25,995, which is right in line with current values for these fascinating SUVs.

I would expect that Typhoons as nice as this one are bound to continue increasing in value, which could make this is one of those rare opportunities of purchasing a collector vehicle as they are just starting to gain popularity and not after they triple in value.

Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott at his regular press briefing today, updated guidance issued a week ago on social engagement. He said these were "commonsense" changes predicated on feedback the administration had received. In particular, the governor had previously announced that individuals could no longer take a walk outside with a non-household member. He rescinded that today and is allowing people to be outside with one non-household member, while still maintaining the usual COVID-19 health protocols like social distancing and mask wearing.

He also is allowing someone living alone to engage with another household. Also, anyone who feels they are in danger or threatened can move into another household in order to stay safe.

The governor issued stricter guidelines last week as COVID cases started to surge. These restrictions indicated that you cannot engage socially with individuals who are not within your own household, travel into the state from anywhere without quarantining and he also closed bars. These new restrictions were imposed because with the surge in cases came date indicating that 71 percent of all new COVID cases came from social interactions -- everything from dinner parties to baby showers -- and not from places like restaurants, shopping, schools or worksites.

Governor Scott continued to emphasize the overall, restrictive social and travel guidance today because the state set a record of 148 cases on Thursday and nearly broke it Friday with another 146 reported by the Vermont Department of Health. There also have been four COVID-related deaths in the last two weeks with three at the Rutland Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center long term-care facility in just the last few days.

Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD, said the spike in cases and recent deaths are reminders that everyone must remain vigilant and continue to follow the health protocols. The more the virus circulates in the community, he said, the greater the likelihood it could find its way into a nursing home, where those who are most vulnerable to the disease reside.

As of today, the VDH is reporting 146 new cases of COVID-19 statewide for a total of 3,459 during the pandemic. There are currently 18 hospitalized with one person in the ICU. There have been 62 deaths.

As Vermont continues its work to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, reduce the spread of the virus, keep Vermonters working, and keep our children in school, our mitigation strategy is constantly evolving.

To that end, the following is required of all Vermonters, visitors, and businesses per theGovernors Executive Order:

Critical Updates - November 13, 2020, Effective November 14, 2020 at 10:00 pm until further notice.

Notwithstanding the guidance in the remainder of this document, which will be updated in the days to come, the guidance in this section supersedes the guidance below:

2nd and 4th class licensees and licensees other than 1st class licensees who serve food, or partner with entities who serve food, including bars and social clubs shall suspend operations; however, bars and social clubs may offer take-out, curbside pickup and delivery of beverage alcohol, including spirit-based drinks and malt and vinous product.

For purposes of this order, bars and social clubs means establishments generally held out to be a bar, tavern, brew pub, brewery, microbrewery, distillery pub, winery, cidery, tasting room, club or other place of public accommodation licensed to serve beverage alcohol, including spirit-based drinks and malt and vinous product and, if serving food, only serves snacks, pre-made food, microwaveable or other food items not required to be prepared in an on-site kitchen equipped to provide menu service.

MANDATORY HEALTH & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL BUSINESS, NON-PROFIT & GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS

BUSINESS CUSTOMER & GENERAL PUBLIC MASK USE

As of Saturday, August 1, 2020, Vermonters and visitors are required to wear masks or cloth facial coverings over their nose and mouth any time they are in public spaces, indoors or outdoors, where they come in contact with others from outside their households, especially in congregate settings, and where it is not possible to maintain a physical distance of at least six feet.

Masks or cloth facial coverings are not required when someone is engaged in strenuous exercise or activity, for anyone under the age of 2, any child or adult with a medical or developmental issue or challenge that is complicated or irritated by a facial covering, anyone with difficulty breathing or as further set forth in guidance issued by VDH. A person who declines to wear a mask or cloth face covering because of a medical or developmental issue, or difficulty breathing, shall not be required to produce documentation, or other evidence, verifying the condition.

Businesses and non-profit and government entities shall implement measures notifying customers or clients of the requirement to wear masks or facial coverings, which may include, but shall not be limited to, posting signage stating that masks or cloth facial coverings are required and denial of entry or service to customers or clients who decline to wear masks or facial coverings.

CROSS STATE TRAVEL

Vermonters may travel outside of Vermont to counties across the Northeast including New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia that have a similar active COVID-19 caseload to Vermont (less than 400 cases per million) and return without quarantining if they do so in a personal vehicle (including private air travel). Similarly, residents of other states who live in counties across the Northeast including New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia that have a similar active COVID-19 caseload to Vermont (less than 400 cases per million) may enter the state for leisure travel without quarantining under specific conditions laid out below.

The State of Vermont has determined that any county with less than 400 active cases of COVID-19 per one million residents meets this criteria. The Agency will publish anupdated mapand list each Tuesday by 5 p.m. at accd.vermont.gov identifying quarantine and non-quarantine counties throughout the Northeastern United States. Vermonters must remember to follow any travel restrictions and quarantine requirements for the states they plan to visit.

Residents from a non-quarantine county may travel to Vermont without quarantine restrictions if they travel directly to Vermont in their personal vehicle. This includes overnight travel, commuting for work, leisure visits and recreation. Travelers are encouraged to register withSara Alertupon arrival to Vermont to get two weeks of daily reminders to check for common symptoms of COVID-19. Travelers must remember to follow any travel restrictions and quarantine requirements in their home upon return.

Travelers, including Vermonters, that visit or are from a quarantine county must still quarantine for 14-days upon entrance into Vermont or quarantine for at least seven days upon entrance into Vermont and receive a negative COVID-19 test.

Authorized Work Exemption: The State of Vermont currently allows those traveling to or from Vermont for authorized work, whether they are a Vermonter or a non-resident traveler, to enter Vermont without quarantining when:

Travelers may complete either: (i) a 14-day quarantine; or (ii) a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test - in their home state and enter Vermont without further quarantine restrictionsif they drive directly from their home via their personal vehicle.

Travelers may complete either: (i) a 14-day quarantine; or (ii) a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in a Vermont lodging establishmentregardless of destination origin or manner of travel(travelers must stay in their quarantine location for the duration of quarantine other than to travel to and from a test site).

People traveling for essential purposes, including work, do not need to quarantine.Essential travelincludes travel for personal safety, medical care, care of others, parental shared custody, for food, beverage or medicine, to attend preK-12 school if commuting daily, or to perform work for businesses that are currently allowed to operate. The current State of Emergency requires employers to use remote work and telework whenever possible to avoid unnecessary work travel. Businesses and employees must only travel for work related trips when absolutely necessary. Individuals engaged in a daily commute to and from their job are expressly exempt from the need to quarantine by Executive Order.

Persons should not travel to, from, or within Vermont if they are experiencingCOVID-19 symptomsor if they meet thecriteria for needing to Isolate or Quarantine.

In July 2015, Random House rushed to release Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates epistolary book written to his then-15-year-old son, Samori, as Americans struggled to find higher ground after a white supremacist murdered nine Black churchgoers at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, that June.

Saturday, the screen adaptation of this book-length letter arrives on HBO following a summer of familiar sorrow, anguish and unrest. Its director, Apollo Theater executive producer Kamilah Forbes, filmed the 80-minute television poem in August, when the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor were weighing heavily on the national consciousness. (Forbes also directed a 2018 performance of Between the World and Me for the Apollo stage, and shes also co-producing a feature film adaptation of Coates novel The Water Dancer alongside Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitts Plan B.)

The circumstances under which the book and its TV adaptation enter the world serve as a reminder that in America, Coates is always relevant. While HBOs Between the World and Me doesnt feel rushed, it bears the markers of a work made in the COVID-19 era. Forbes employs tight shots that fill the frame with the faces of actors Joe Morton, Yara Shahidi, Winfrey, Janet Mock, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Wendell Pierce, Phylicia Rashad, Jharrel Jerome and Mj Rodriguez. As such, the adaptation relies heavily on the chops of the artists delivering Coates words, who are spliced together with archival footage and photographs and original music by Jason Moran, the John F. Kennedy Centers artistic director for jazz. Its not a competition, but Ali has everyone licked, in part because his gentle, deep-voiced presence is paired with the most romantic part of the book, when Coates talks about meeting Samoris mother, Kenyatta, at Howard University, the place that shaped him. This girl revealed, that soft or hard, love was an act of heroism, Coates wrote.

An exception to the format is the appearance of Howard alumnus Susan Kelechi Watson, who Forbes, also a Howard alum, filmed on the famous Yard at the Washington school as she extolled the many possibilities of Blackness, freedom and love that Coates writes about there. I mention those who are associated with Howard because its such a big part of the text, of Coates life, of his worldview. Though Between the World and Me is addressed to Samori, it is just as much a love letter to Howard as anything else.

I wondered if Between the World and Me would have been better suited for a 2021, postvaccine production, and I realized that Id taken it for granted that the work would hold because in a year or two or three, the odds are high that well be mourning the loss of someone else whose life was cut short simply because they are Black. The art holds because the contempt for Black agency cannot be erased in a matter of months, and the fatal consequences of such contempt occur with such regularity. Between the World and Me is, in part, a snapshot of the self-realization that Coates experienced when Howard student Prince Jones was killed by an undercover Prince Georges County, Maryland, police officer in September 2000. The names didnt stop after Jones death. Instead, they accumulated.

But Between the World and Me is here now, and though its marked with the scars of 2020, it also carries a Black generational hallmark. It is a work sprung from the minds of Generation X artists who came of age with Def Poetry Jam, which aired on HBO from 2002 to 2007. Theres a reason for that: Forbes was a producer on the show.

The film expands to include Black women and girls in its address, an update that recalls the most pointed criticism of Coates book, written by Howard alum Shani O. Hilton for BuzzFeed, adding to my daughter to to my son. Its an admirable gesture, though, without further additions to the text, the effect magnifies Hiltons original point, which is that the Black male experience is too often regarded as a universal Black experience. Nevertheless, Between the World and Me remains a powerful, timeless work, just as much as James Baldwins A Letter to My Nephew. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching chapter in a centurieslong book of struggle, as articulated by a son of The Mecca.

HBOs adaptation of Between the World and Me is sadly still timely - The Undefeated

Carmen and Mary Siciliano started married life in a one-room apartment during World War II. They ended it 76 years later in a fifth-floor hospital room they shared with COVID-19.

Carmen, 98, died at 10:48 a.m. Thursday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, six days after he was given a bed next to Mary, who was diagnosed with the coronavirus first. Mary, still recovering, moved Friday into a skilled nursing facility in Batavia, say their daughters, Joyce Siciliano Andringa of Aurora and Gail Siciliano Grazian of Naperville.

Mary's bed was pushed close enough before Carmen's death for her to touch her husband's arm as they listened to a recording of Nat King Cole singing their favorites such as "Autumn Leaves" and "Unforgettable."

"We asked if she wanted to be in the same room holding my dad's hand when he goes to heaven, and she said yes," says Gail, who says her father always wanted to take care of her mother. "We told him we were going to take care of her from now on."

The couple's love and commitment to each other inspired doctors, nurses and other staff members at Good Samaritan. Hospital rooms are designated for single patients but the family thought it would help if Carmen and Mary could be in adjoining beds in the same room of the respiratory isolation unit.

"Our physicians also thought that was a great idea," says nurse Rene Scheier, interim manager of the Clinical Resource Unit at Good Samaritan. "It was set up perfectly for them."

They even made room for Carmen's World War II hat that he wore until his death, foam boards filled with photographs from their life together, and a CD player.

"It's important for us to provide holistic care," Scheier says. "We could see how important this was for the entire Siciliano family. This is a perfect example of the type of compassion our team members have for our patients at Good Sam."

Mary Monstere was just 14 when she left her family's farm and her nine siblings in Louisiana to babysit for her older brother's family on Chicago's South Side, across the street from where Carmen Siciliano lived with his parents and nine siblings.

"My parents were farmers, and when I graduated eighth grade, I asked, 'Can I go to high school?'" Mary explained. "And they said, 'No. We have to eat.'"

After each day of classes at Parker High School in Chicago, Carmen would take a train downtown for a job unloading mail bags from trains onto trucks. He quit high school to take a better-paying job cutting the heads and legs off chickens for Campbell Soup Co.

Their first date was on Mary's 15th birthday, when Carmen took her downtown to see the movie "Sergeant York." The five-year age difference didn't bother Mary, whose mother was married at age 13 in Italy.

Once they started dating, World War II was the only thing that kept them apart. Even then, Carmen, who enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, wrote a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Monstere asking for their daughter's hand in marriage. Carmen also persuaded his captain to give him a two-week leave so he could wed Mary on Aug. 5, 1944. Mary was 17. Carmen was 22.

During the war, Mary lied about her age to get a job winding wire coils in a factory where an older brother worked. She and Carmen wrote each other lovely letters in spite of Carmen's gruesome duty handling the casualties of war. "All the dead bodies would come in, and we'd set them up so they could be brought back here," Carmen said.

He served the remainder of his military service as an X-ray technician in Fort Sheridan, and the newlyweds settled into domestic life without much money.

"We would wait until the stores closed, then we went window shopping," Carmen said. They raised their son, Frank, who died in 2016, and daughters Joyce and Gail in the south suburb of Dolton. An excellent gymnast and diver in high school, Carmen remained in great shape. He made a habit of performing handstands on the hood of every car he owned and once did an impromptu handstand on the ledge of Hoover Dam that almost got him arrested.

He made his living as a painter. He supervised a crew painting the Prudential Building, with the highest roof in Chicago at the time, and spent time every year at Wrigley Field, where "I painted the whole place," he said.

At the couple's 75th anniversary party in 2019, they gave a couple of tips for a happy marriage

"We never went to bed angry," Mary said.

"We always kissed before going to bed," Carmen added. Then he played "Happy Anniversary" on his harmonica -- but only after removing the dentures from his mouth and handing them to Mary, who clearly had played that part before. He also played taps every Veterans Day, until the one the day before he died.

During the pandemic, their daughters and other family members generally had to gather on a patio and shout up to Carmen and Mary on the second-floor balcony at Heritage Woods assisted living facility in Batavia, where they lived.

In August, the couple made a trip to Joyce's house, where they got haircuts in the garage, and Joyce gave them both manicures and pedicures. The last time the family got to be with the couple in person was at a socially distanced gender-reveal party in September outside Heritage Woods. That's when they found out their grandson Jayson and Ninnette Nofzinger would be parents of a boy due in January 2021, when Carmen would have turned 99.

The last time the daughters saw their parents was on a Zoom call to show them photos of the family's newest additions -- twin granddaughters born on Halloween, the couple's third and fourth great-grandchildren. Carmen, who is legally blind, held the image up to his face.

"My mom wants to get her hands on those babies," Gail says.

"My dad has been ready to go," Joyce says, explaining how Carmen used to blame his daughters and wife for keeping him alive too long. When he planned his funeral years ago, Carmen told his wife, "If you die before me, I'll kill you," and joked, "Don't bury me in the smoking section."

On the first phone call with the daughters after Carmen died, Mary cried. But they all realize the couple had a pretty amazing run. The couple shared everything, but mostly love. Even at the end

"God was on our shoulder guiding this journey," Gail says.

The "angels" who helped along the way ease the pain.

"They had a great life," Joyce says of her parents. "People need to hear wonderful stories of love and hope."
