With heavy rain and wind blowing into town, Portlanders prepared for the storm by protecting their homes.

It's the household chore that most people hate to do: cleaning out your gutters; but, the longer you wait, the harder it gets.

While some people hire landscapers this time of year, the cost can be too much for some. There are a couple of DIY ways to make it that much easier on you.

A quick check of Pinterest and YouTube brought up dozens of options, but some of the top ways to clean out the gutters may include things you might already have in your garage.

Option 1: The leaf blower with PVC piping

One suggested way was to use a leaf blower and attach some PVC piping to it.

The piping itself extends directly to the gutters, but the downside is that the debris and muck blows around on to the ground.

Option 2: Shop-Vac and gutter clean-up kit

Another DIY way to clean out the gutters uses a similar method, only it incorporates a Shop-Vac and a gutter clean-up kit that you can pick up from a hardware store for around $20.
