WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) If youre doing a little spring cleaning this weekend, you may discover that this past winter was very hard on your home.

So what are the signs of winter distress and what can be done about them? CBS 2s Sonia Rincon got answers on Friday.

Rincon saw one house in Woodcliff Lake that appeared to be in perfect shape, but in reality was suffering after taking a brutal beating. The conditions this past winter were some of the harshest for a house, home inspector Henry Scheyer said.

Scheyer used a thermal imaging camera to check for cold spots. Those can result in moisture and moisture means damage. He said the winter snow and ice on the home that refused to melt for weeks trapped all that the moisture in.

The back of this house was frozen. There was ice flowing down the sides of the house. The icicles were 5, 6 feet long. It was a bad winter, Scheyer said.

One obvious warning sign was a leak in the kitchen ceiling.

Water is the worst enemy of a house. You can see now hes got problems because there was ice up here. Ice develops in the gutter. Water freezes and then goes back underneath and then just rots that wood out, Scheyer said.

The source of the leak in the kitchen was water actually getting under the shingles because they were buried under snow, Scheyer said. And the warmth from the house was creating pockets of water, which were ponding with nowhere else to go, which means cleaning your gutters regularly cant be emphasized enough.

Window Genie announces the grand opening of their newest location in Boise on Monday March 24th. Justin Beller is the owner/operator. Window Genie is a Cincinnati based, nationally ranked home services franchise offering window cleaning, window tinting, pressure washing, gutter cleaning and more. Window Genie of Boise will service the Treasure Valley areas of Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa and Caldwell.

Before joining the Window Genie team, Beller worked mostly in corporate training and development. He said the instability in working on a contract basis with various large companies grew tiring, A lot of these businesses didnt want to commit full-time to have someone do training for their staff, so work was often short term. I was just making lateral moves in my career; I wanted the opportunity to continue growing and improving both professionally and personally. I grew up working in our family business back in Salmon, Idaho selling clothing and furniture, so I knew what a small business looked like, how it operated behind the scenes and was comfortable with exploring that option as my next move.

Beller met a franchise coach in 2013 named Dick Bunge from The Entrepreneurs Source, a franchise consulting agency. Beller said of working with Bunge, He took great care in finding companies that would best suit my strengths, goals and interests. I believe in operating with integrity, honesty, and giving back when you can. Window Genie exhibits all those qualities - and then some. I also believe he presented Window Genie to me because it is a solid company, one that matched my strengths and allows a person like myself to be successful. Also, it doesn't hurt that Window Genie is in an industry that is growing and profitable. I wanted to invest in something for the long-term and that was sustainable.

Window Genie of Boise officially opens for business on March 24th. Beller says he is excited about business ownership and, really charting my own course. When it comes to this business, the decisions I make will directly affect my success and the success of my team. Im ready for that kind of responsibility and its something I missed in my previous career. Im excited to create a solid team of individuals that can take pride in their work and see it pay off. In the past, working for big companies, I was never completely sure if the work I put in was making an impact on the performance or profitability of the company I was working for. My technicians, the guys doing most of the cleaning, will know how they impact the success of Window Genie and when theyre doing a good job. I think thats only fair and will help them grow as professionals.

Window Genie, a nationally ranked franchise of home services offering window cleaning, window tinting, pressure washing, gutter cleaning and much more, announces the grand opening of their newest location on Monday March 24th. Harry and Laurie Sparks are the owners. This is the third Window Genie location to open in the Charlotte area and will serve the South Charlotte, Matthews, and Mint Hill communities.

Before joining the Window Genie team, Harry Sparks spent some time doing contracting work in the IT compliance field. He also did some systems analysis helping people integrate computer systems after mergers. I enjoyed it most of the time, but contracting being a series of short term projects meant I was always looking for work. Every three to six months I was looking for my next job. That gets tiring, Sparks said.

Sparks had thought about business ownership off and on for years. I was at a networking meeting where the topic was about improving resumes, something I had been doing a lot of since I was always looking for jobs a few times a year. That particular meeting is when I met my franchise coach from The Entrepreneurs Source, Lauren Cantor. We started talking and I decided it was time to seriously investigate the option of business ownership with her guidance.

The two discussed Sparks strengths, weaknesses, interests and goals. Sparks said, Lauren presented me with about 10 franchises that she thought best fit me and what I was looking for. One reason Window Genie came up was that it would allow me to work around my life, not schedule my life around my work. At this point in my life Im more concerned with the lifestyle aspect when it comes to making a living; I wanted flexibility in my schedule. Im on a few local non-profit boards and I wanted the freedom to attend meetings during the day, or even do something as simple as scheduling a doctors appointment. With Window Genie I can do these things without worrying that Im affecting the business because its not like owning a retail or food shop; the hours arent so strict.

Sparks was also drawn to Window Genies marketing model. Window Genies business does not require cold calling whatsoever, he said. I really like that I can offer multiple services, year round. In the Charlotte climate I can get a solid 10 months of window cleaning. Im looking forward to being able to help people save energy and keep their houses more comfortable with window tinting. I think building a repeat customer base will be exciting and fairly easy if we deliver on quality and customer service. There really is a service for every home and every budget.

Window Genie of South Charlotte officially opens for business on Monday March 24th, but the Sparks have already lined up some estimates just by word of mouth. Ive been so pleased just in the reactions I get from friends, family and neighbors, Harry said. I already have several people asking me to come out and do an estimate on their homes for spring cleaning. Im definitely excited but somewhat scared to be honest. I expect to be very busy with spring right around the corner, but Im excited about the potential here. We plan to grow the business, and were very happy with our decision to become business owners.
