Alderman Ian Luder, Lord Mayor of London in 2008-9, has been elected foreman of the Guildable Manor of Southwark.

He succeeds former BBC International Mastermind champion Leslie Grout.

The installation on Wednesday afternoon was immediately followed by a sitting of the Guildable Manor court leet at St George the Martyr Church in Borough High Street.

This was the first time that court of Guildable Manor, covering the Borough Market area, has been convened at the church.

But it was the last to be presided over by Southwark High Steward Brian Barker who retires next spring as Recorder of London.

The jurors presented the retiring High Steward with a copy of Southwark and the City by David Johnson.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard, who has been appointed the next Recorder of London, is expected to be confirmed as High Steward shortly before Easter.

Since 1804 it has been the convention for the Recorder to also take on the role of Southwark's High Steward at the invitation of the City of London's Aldermanic Court.

In 2003 Judge Hilliard, at present Common Serjeant of London, was prosecuting barrister in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? coughing major trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Council to meet Wednesday - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MARTINEZ, Calif. The Martinez City Council will meet Wednesday, Nov 3.

According to the agenda, Alan Shear, assistant city manager, will present the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the 2014 fiscal year that ended June 30. The General Fund ended at June 30, 2014, with an unassigned fund balance of $5,720,878.

Also, the council will vote on a motion to appoint Shear as acting city manager until a permanent city manager has been hired.

Since July 28, Jim Jakel has been serving as interim city manager. On Nov. 15, Jakels service in that role will end and Jakel will remain available to the city on an hourly basis to assist on complex and time-sensitive projects.

Shear has served as assistant city manager since 2010 and has acted as city manager a number of times in the past. A new city manager is expected to be hired in the first quarter of 2015.

Among the presentations on the agenda are a proclamation that Nov. 25 will be Joe DiMaggios 100th Year Birthday Celebration, a presentation by Central Contra Costa Sanitary District and Rising Sun Energy Center recap of the 2014 California Youth Energy Services Program.

Also on the agenda is hiring a contractor for two sidewalk projects in the city.

The Alhambra Valley Road Sidewalk Project will install 400 feet of 5-foot wide sidewalk behind an existing curb along John Swett Elementary School frontage from the school driveway north to Gilbert Court and curb ramps at Gilbert Court. Currently there exists a non ADA compliant gravel path. The path is difficult to maneuver strollers and wheel chairs during dry weather. The path is nearly impossible to navigate after rain events. Completing this segment will provide continuous ADA compliant access between John Swett Elementary School and Alhambra Avenue. Current funding includes a Transportation for Livable Communities (TLC) grant and CCTA Measure J monies.

The Shell Avenue Pedestrian Improvement Project will reduce the potential for conflicts between motor vehicles and children walking to school. The project is along the southern side of Shell Avenue and would consist of demolition of existing improvements and the installation of curb gutter and sidewalk. The sidewalk will extend from Pine Street westerly approximately 700 feet. There is currently no sidewalk on the proposed section of Shell Avenue and there are no suitable alternative routes for children to avoid walking along this busy street. Most of the project area has no road shoulder and has obstacles such as steep slopes, landscape rocks, mailboxes, trash cans, and parked cars that force children to walk in the street where they are exposed to fast moving traffic. Existing sidewalk joins both ends of the proposed project area.

New Miss. hotels name makes woman do double-take - November 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLARKSDALE, Miss. In business, advertising is everything and it always helps to have a catchy slogan or sign.

WREG reports that a couple of Clarksdale, Mississippi, developers created a buzz by opening a new hotel that pays homage to a famous Delta Blues legend, in a very eye-opening way.

The sign for Hooker Hotel, on East 2nd Street in downtown Clarksdale, immediately got Pamela Vances attention.

It just amazed me. And I came back just to actually came back to see if I was reading the right thing or if something was wrong with my eyes, said Pamela Vance of Friars Point.

No, Pamela, theres nothing wrong with your vision. The sign clearly reads Hooker Hotel.

Its the newest place in Clarksdale to bed down for a night or two.

Cause the first impression I know, was in the gutter. But thats just where my mind went, said Vance.

But before you call the Vice Squad, you should know this unique hotel is named for Delta Blues legend John Lee Hooker.

Probably one of the better old-time Blues guys. Very popular in the 60s, John Magnusson, the builder and property manager for Hooker Hotel, said.

Highway 85 construction starts Monday in Deadwood - November 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEADWOOD The journey to Deadwoods Highway 85 construction project has been just as bumpy and windy as the 1.5-mile road really is, but Monday crews will begin working to improve the major thoroughfare, looking to improve the ride for locals and tourists, alike.

With city, South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) and Oftedal officials in attendance, the project was discussed in detail Wednesday night at a public meeting in Deadwood.

Construction on Deadwoods Highway 85/Cemetery Street Reconstruction Project will begin in November and has an anticipated completion date of September, 2016.

The project timeline includes three phases.

Phase 1 will run from November through March of 2014 and includes four sub-phases, none of which involve highway reconstruction. Phase 1A includes Cemetery Street storm sewer and utilities work. Phase 1B includes constructing a retaining wall near the Mickelson Trail, and Phase 1D includes a rock cut in the vicinity of Twin City Hardware. Phase 1C includes a rock cut in the vicinity of Mollmans gas station.

Phase 1 traffic control involves closing down a portion of Cemetery Street; a temporary pedestrian access detour on the Mickelson Trail; one lane of traffic through the rock cut 1 and 2 areas using flaggers and temporary signals.

Chris Audiss, project manager for the principal contractor on the project, Oftedal Construction, said that Monday, crews will begin setting up barriers at the site of the first rock cut, near Mollmans corner.

Well be setting up concrete barriers along the south edge of the highway, Audisss said. The barriers are to protect any rocks that may fall down from up top, as we are starting to excavate this rock cut.

On Monday, motorists should expect 10 minute delays.

Tuesday, the project begins in earnest, and motorists will experience two weeks of 30-minute delays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

DMR Gutters Installation Quality Standards Page - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Introduction

DMR's Work Standards for Gutters The list below explains most of the details regarding our 31 unique advantages over most any other local Gutter Contractors for just basic gutter and downspout installations, which are well above Building Code. These don't even cover the descriptions of the our 'affordable' No-clog option advantages we've done on most gutter jobs over the past 18 years. For a comparison of leaf debris protection for gutters with the different concepts out there and a list of advantages go to my No-clog Comparison web page, which is much more than just a check list you may have seen on other web sites.

To the right is a copy of our cover sheet I have as part of our presentation folder I give each client when providing them a bid. In this presentation folder I also provide a list of my current prices, a copy of the Better Business Bureau's NW Business Integrity Award for the year 1997/98, 10 page FAQ, consumer protection information required by the CCB, along with other consumer protection pamphlet they wrote, and of course a detailed bid with a selection of color options for the pre-painted aluminum gutter parts.

I also supply a physical sample of the gutter I install with a Monster Hidden Hanger screwed in place w/stainless steel screws. If the client is present at the time of the bid I also have a physical example of the Leaf-catcher we make, which has a stronger stainless steel screen in them, along with other samples of parts you will see no where else.

You can click on each picture on this web page to get a better detailed look or link to pages with more detailed information and photos.

    1. Our Installation Experience and Ethics: Doing business as DMR I have been local to the Portland Oregon area since 1985. Your new gutter parts will be installed by a seasoned professional who is also the owners of DMR Gutters with an apprentice I've know since he was a young lad. I have a vested interest in my company's reputation, which it seems I cannot pay others enough to care as much. Not installed by workers you never got a chance to meet before hand, as with most any other Gutter Contractor. Ask their sales rep how much experience they've had installing gutters, if not actively an installer. Did they walking around your house with you pointing out suggestions for improvement which can and will be made to improve your rain management system?

I, David Rich have been working in forms of paid construction work since 1980 coming up with innovative solutions. I was tested in school to have a 99% mechanical aptitude, with a high skill in spatial arrangement, math, and an artistic back ground. The first paid gig for wood working I got was building a large humanoid skeletal and muscular structure in a dramatic stance for a life-size Darth Vader costume I designed and made for the promotions of the Star Wars sequel 'Empire Strikes Back' in 1980 in Salt Lake City Utah, since they do not sell a 7' tall mannequin. That demonstrated my early remarkable ingenuity at just 17 years old. My fellow classmates must have thought I was nuts!

I was an auto mechanic at my Father's shop specializing in Honda 600 cars. I've specialized in custom rain management sheet metal fabrication and installation since 1992. In most cases I redesign the replacements to improve their rain management system from what was there before in numerous different ways not offered by other Gutter Contractors.

Tia Rich decided to set aside her career in Nursing and Social Work to join David in this line of work full time for a few years, so she understands this work from all angles as well. Tia is also very artistic and has a positive influences on this presentation and the gutter work. She still loves being active in this business, but she has built up her business as a Midwife, so getting her hands covered with spray paint, caulk, and cuts from working with the sheet-metal would not be good for her line of work these days. she does not physically work with David much any more, but is often found with him writing up bids. Her web site for her business is: http://inner-serenity.org.

Other than coffee and tea, I don't use artificial stimulants or depressants on or off work. I have written web pages on the philosophy of good ethics in business and one's personal life to express my feelings on ethical responsibility. You can read more about my background on my Company History web page and Biography web page if you're so inclined.
