Baltimore County firefighter dies during training exercise - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A 58-year-old Baltimore County firefighter died Friday afternoon after he suffered a suspected heart attack during training, officials said.

Robert Fogle III, a 27-year veteran and career firefighter, was participating in exercises at the Sparrows Point training facility when he became ill. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"It just reminds us about the sacrifice that our first responders do each and every day and the risks that they take to be fit and capable of helping others," Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said.

Officials said Fogle had gone with an engine crew and medic crew from the Pikesville station to the Sparrows Point facility for routine training at 1 p.m. They first did "operations readiness training," which involved firefighting skills such as climbing stairs and lifting ladders, said Fire Chief John Hohman.

After a break, the group went to "the maze," a trailer where firefighters must use their breathing apparatus to navigate through an unfamiliar area. No smoke was used, Hohman said.

When it became clear Fogle was in distress, he was quickly removed and treated, Hohman said.

"It wasn't long at all. The maze is designed in such a way that when something like this happens, they can dismantle things and get somebody out fairly quickly. The crew was right there," Hohman said.

It was there that Fogle suffered an apparent heart attack and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

All firefighters complete the training annually, Hohman said. This is the first death at the training center. He said there will be an internal investigation into Fogle's death.

Fogle's death is considered a "line of duty" death, Kamenetz said, the first in the county in 2014.

Sheffield handyman charged with holding woman hostage, trying to kill her - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SHEFFIELD, Alabama -- Sheffield police have charged a man in connection to a brutal scene they encountered early Saturday.

Sgt. Ray Terry, who is leading the investigation, said Bobbie Dean Dickerson is charged with attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree theft. He said Dickerson was found at a home on 13th Street where a woman was held against her will and assaulted for hours.

The woman told police Dickerson worked for her as a handyman. She said he came to her home while intoxicated early Saturday. She told police an altercation ensued and Dickerson held her hostage and assaulted her for four hours. He allegedly threw her down and cut her throat during the attack.

Terry said patrol officers responded to the home and found the woman in bad shape and with incisions on her throat. They applied first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived. She was treated locally before being flown to Huntsville Hospital for surgery. Terry said she has since been released.

Dickerson remains in the Sheffield City Jail.

Wash And Deliver: Startups Aim To Solve First World Problems - May 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When laundry's too much of a hassle, there are on-demand services to pick it up and do it for you, with the tap of an app.

Sick of doing the laundry? The latest hot Silicon Valley startup, Washio the subject of a new profile in New York Magazine lets you press a button on your phone and someone will come and pick up your laundry, or your dry cleaning.

If you actually prefer to do your own laundry in the Bay Area but the dryer's broken, the startup Handybook provides on-demand repairs for less than the cost of a traditional handyman. It offers superfast housecleaning services, too.

hide captionWashio offers on-demand laundry pickup and delivery for $1.60 a pound.

Washio offers on-demand laundry pickup and delivery for $1.60 a pound.

Other tasks can be handled with the same ease, thanks to the proliferation of niche startups. In San Francisco, you can order gourmet meal-delivery from SpoonRocket with the tap of an app, use Postmates to deliver virtually any item or BloomThat to send flowers on demand.

And of course, in several American cities you can easily open an app to get yourself an Uber ride instead of God forbid, standing at the corner and waiting for a cab to come by.

This is all to say that the excitement for niche services like these and the willingness for venture capitalists to fund them is quickly eliminating all your first world problems.

By solving these "problems," we're getting our time back less time stuck in traffic to pick up a meal, a few minutes saved by not having to make a phone call to order flowers, our weekend hours spared from the hassle of laundry. Arguably, this new free time will allow for more satisfying lives. At least that's the collective promise of these services. (As I've blogged about before, technologists tend to solve the problems they can see, so this situation also underlines the need for more socioeconomically, racially and age-diverse technologists.)
