Talking Business: Longview entrepreneur finds success with home security business - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rural, idyllic Silver Lake may not seem like fertile turf for selling security and alarm systems, but for Chris Sturm, having a home alarm is all about peace of mind.

Your neighbors are close but not overly close, so its nice to have the extra protection, Sturm said on Friday. After using another company for 25 years, Sturm said she was tired of having an outdated system so switched to Universal Security and Alarm Inc., to bring her home system up to date.

Sturm is just one of the 200 customers Universal Security has signed on since opening its doors in April. The Longview company offers residential and commercial alarm systems, medical alert buttons and fire monitors to customers in Washington, Oregon and California.

Prior to starting Universal, owner Aaron Wenner worked for another alarm systems company for over three years while running a side business with his wife Lacey. They were partners in Great Vapes, which offered supplies for users of vaporizers and e-cigarettes. Great Vapes, located in Longview, never gained traction in the area, and Wenner is in the process of selling off all of Great Vapes inventory. University Security operates out of the same address at 1429 15th Avenue.

Wenner was looking for a fresh start. Seeing the profitability of the alarm industry, and noticing areas where he thought his employer could improve, Wenner decided to break off and form his own company.

Wenner acts as a dealer working under the umbrella of the Monitronics Security System, a Dallas-based company and one of ADTs major competitors. After signing on customers and installing the hardware, Universal sells the contracts to Monitronics, which then offers 24-hour monitoring. Local police or fire officials are alerted if the alarms are activated.

Unlike old-school alarm systems, which operate off of a telephone line, Universals systems are completely wireless, using cell towers and WiFi to monitor spaces. These wireless systems are more secure, according to Wenner, since anyone can easily find an Internet video detailing how to disable a landline alarm system by cutting the telephone wire outside the building.

Wireless operation also means the system can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app. Customers can close garage doors, turn on lights and access remote video from their home security cameras using the app. Thats important for Sturm, who said she spends a lot of time away from her home travelling since retiring in 2013.

I can pull it up on smartphone and turn on lights and turn on the heat, I can do different things that I couldnt do (with the other system), she said. Sturm added that she and her husband Gene have referred several clients to the service.

Wenner depends on that word-of-mouth marketing, along with door-to-door salesmen, to bring in new customers. Big clients include Grocery Outlet stores in Vancouver and Tacoma, as well Les Schwab in Vancouver. Wenner is counting on his competitive pricing and high-tech equipment to continue to expand his customer base.

Home Security Camera Video Shows Deadly Police-Involved Shooting - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Glenn McEntyre Saturday October 11, 2014 11:00 PM UPDATED: Saturday October 11, 2014 11:33 PM

Home security camera video captured the confrontation between Columbus police and robbery suspects that left two people dead.

The video emerged Saturday as police released new information on the deadly confrontation.

Police said the incident started with an armed robbery Friday night at the Dollar General store on Alum Creek Drive. Police confronted and killed two of the suspects as they were trying to get away.

They are withholding the names of the two people killed by officers while they notify their families. Officers have identified the two suspects in custody as 20 year old Aarin Clinkscale and 17 year old Savon Dearmond.

Security camera video obtained by 10tv shows the suspect vehicle parking on Greenery Drive, one block away from the Dollar General store. Two figures get out of the car, and walk away. The car then pulls forward, turns around, and re-parks across the street. Approximately five minutes later, the video shows two figures returning to the car. They walk just past it, then turn around and appear to get in the back seat. Before the car door is pulled closed, police move in from behind and in front, penning in the suspects' vehicle. Officers emerge from their vehicles, the back door of the suspects' vehicle opens, and a suspect runs toward the rear of the car. He suddenly drops to the ground, presumably the moment he was shot by police.

The shooting happened just outside Sharon Prilaman's home. She and her 9 year old son were in their living room when she said they first heard intense yelling. "My son went to go to the window. I said, 'Bobby get away from the window! Something could be going on.' And by the time I go to get up, I hear buh-boom buh-boom boom-boom. I immediately grab my son, pull him to the floor. I got over top of him. We crawled to the bathroom." said Prilaman.

She called 911, and the operator told her police were on the scene.

That's because they had staked out the store after a series of hold-ups at Dollar Generals. They were already in place when they said the suspects held employees and customers at gunpoint. And when the suspects tried to escape, they were surrounded.

Prilaman saw one of the bodies lying in the street covered with a sheet. "It's just heartbreaking and it's sad and you wonder, what made them do this? What made them go this way? Why?" Prilaman asked.

ADT New Jersey – Home Security Alarm Systems in NJ … - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the first six months of 2011 (the most recent crime statistics available), overall crime in New Jersey increased by 2%, according to New Jersey State Police records. In particular, crimes that tend to increase during difficult economic times -- such as robberies, motor vehicle theft, and burglaries -- all increased, with the number of motor vehicle thefts rising by 20% and residential burglaries rising by 10%. The counties where crime increased the most were Warren (14%), Essex (11%), Cape May (10%), and Cumberland (9%), according to NJ.com and NJ.gov.*

The good news is that crime rates in New Jersey -- for both violent and non-violent crimes -- are lower than the national average. The only crime that had a higher rate than the national average was robbery, and the difference was very slight.

The total number of property crimes in New Jersey in 2010 was 183,643, which was a 5% increase over 2009 numbers. There were 38,794 burglaries in New Jersey in 2010, a 5% increase over the 2009 rate. That averages out to just over 106 burglaries per day across the state.

Nationwide, a burglary occurs approximately every 15 seconds, and 88% of burglaries are residential in nature, with the rest being mostly business or car burglaries. The most commonly targeted items in home burglaries are things that are small and valuable, like cash, jewelry, watches, and electronics.

Approximately 87% of home burglaries are considered preventable. In fact, 4% of burglars enter through an unlocked door, so the simple act of locking up consistently can help prevent burglaries. Nearly 80% of burglars enter a home through the front door, back door, or a ground floor window.

There are numerous things the average homeowner can do to help protect against burglary. Here are a few:

Many New Jersey residents have discovered how affordable and effective ADT monitored home security systems are. These home security systems are technologically advanced and are designed to contact authorities immediately and automatically when a break-in is detected.

Installing an ADT monitored home security system in your home may also save you up to 20% on your homeowners' insurance premiums.

An estimated three out of every four homes will be broken into over the next 20 years, but with common-sense home security measures and the use of monitored home security systems, this does not have to be the case.

If you are interested in finding out more about installing an ADT monitored home security system in your New Jersey home, call and speak with one of our professionals at Protect Your Home. Protect Your Home is the nation's number one ADT Authorized Premier Provider with more than 150 installation centers across the U.S. In many instances, you can call today and arrange to have your home security system installed tomorrow.

Springfield Police looking for men connected to burglary, assault - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Springfield Police Division investigators are looking for three men suspected of a home invasion and brutal beating.

The victim, who asked not to be identified due to fear of retaliation, lives on East Home Road and is recovering from the assault. He received 30 stitches to his head and ear from the attack last week.

The man has home security cameras that provided police pictures of the suspects and captured the attack.

I just hope somebody sees this footage and brings these individuals in and justice is served, the victim said.

Police are asking residents to contact them if they have any information on the three suspects by calling 937-324-7685.

The men knocked on the mans door about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 2.

The victim opened the door and the intruders burst through and started to attack the man at gunpoint.

They used binoculars and a DVD tower to beat him, and then tied him up with cable wires.

Its hard to explain, the victim said as he recalled the incident. I thought in my head, I need to keep calm to keep them calm and stay alive.

The men left the home with three boxes, believed to be full of baseball cards and Christmas decorations.

Home security company changes its website, description after Times investigation - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AMBRIDGE -- A website that purported to sell home security systems seems to have closed up shop and changed purposes after a Times investigation into its questionable business practices.

Home Security Shield officials changed the company website Thursday to eliminate all contact information and added a disclaimer saying that the company doesnt sell home security systems.

The phone number listed on the website also was disconnected.

HomeSecurityShield.org is not a home security provider, the disclaimer written at the bottom of the website reads. Rather, HomeSecurityShield.org is an informative website that evaluates, reviews and may recommend home security companies or features of a home security company.

That disclaimer was not on the website the previous day.

The changes come on the heels of a Times investigation that revealed that the company was masquerading as a North Carolina-based, accredited home security company and prompted a Beaver County state representative to ask the state attorney general for an investigation into the company, which seems to be based in Florida.

State Rep. Rob Matzie, D-16, Ambridge, sent a letter to Attorney General Kathleen Kane on Thursday, questioning the business practices of the company. J.J. Abbott, spokesman for the attorney general, said the request was forwarded to the offices Bureau of Consumer Protection.

I have concerns about their marketing practices, Matzie said. Its very difficult to find out any information about the validity of the company.

Matzie said he met with the attorney generals office on Wednesday about concerns that arose after the company ranked Ambridge the second-most-dangerous city in Pennsylvania using FBI Uniform Crime Report data from 2012. A former mayor of Ambridge, Matzie said the borough police and its mayor are very transparent about the type of crime that occurs.

They shouldnt be punished for being open, Matzie said. This ranking affects a town, especially a town that has struggled. The last thing we need is for our reputation to be drug down like that for someone to sell a product.
