Gavin Anders, editor at SecurityPlanet stated, One of the biggest groups of home security system users is parents who want an added peace of mind with regards to their children. In homes across America both parents have full time jobs so their school aged kids may be home for certain periods of time without adult supervision, or a nanny. For this reason, SecurityPlanet.com has released tips that could help parents identify the features that the best home security systems should have.
The experts at SecurityPlanet.com recommend the following features when selecting a home security system:
24 hour monitoring: This is a must have for parents who want to know that the police will be called if there is an intruder in their home when the kids are home alone. Parents cant be there all the time, so its important to have a reliable home security system that can dispatch the authorities quickly. Ensure that burglary, fire and medical are included in your monitoring plans.
Remote Time Alerts and Notifications: For parents concerned about what happens in the home when theyre not there the next best thing could be a house that reports to you. Some home security companys offer monitoring plans that include text messages and email alerts from the house. These notifications can tell when your kids arrive from school, and if the alarm is triggered.
Smartphone Applications: Most phones are smart phones now, and more and more kids have smartphones like iPhones and Android based phones. The top rated home security companies are offering more users ways to interact with their home security systems. Kids could benefit from having a smartphone app that allows/encourages them to arm and disarm the system correctly. More importantly if they notice an alarm event has or is occurring in the home (because smartphone apps also send those alerts); kids can call their parents, as they dont want to walk in on a burglary on progress.
Home Automation: Parents can now lock and unlock doors remotely from work computers or smartphones, control thermostats and light switches. The benefit with this is kids can be forgetful so they may leave the house without locking doors behind them. Parents can now lock doors remotely.
Security Cameras: Integrating security cameras with your home security system could also add peace of mind for people who have nannies or contractors working in the house. It could also be a deterrent for burglars and sneaky teens alike.

(PRWEB UK) 27 September 2013
Homeowners in the UK could be putting themselves at risk of burglary by not putting basic home security measures in place, according to research commissioned by emergency locksmith and glazing specialist Evander.
The survey, conducted to mark UK Home Security Week, found most UK homeowners are unaware of one of the most prevalent burglary techniques, dont use burglar alarms, and are reluctant to make insurance claims affecting their premiums. (http://www.evander.com/blog/enter-your-title-here-2013-09-23)
85 per cent of those questioned said they hadnt heard of lock snapping, a breaking and entering technique whereby the locks cylinder is literally snapped in two. Since 2009, there has been a rise in the technique, and lock snapping is now estimated by some police departments to be used in more than a quarter of burglaries. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-17075027)
More than three-quarters of householders surveyed said they hadnt made any household security improvements over the previous 12 months, if ever, and less than 40 per cent had a burglar alarm installed at home.
Of those who did have an alarm installed, nearly a third (29 per cent) said they never used it because the alarm doesnt work, or because they simply choose not to.
It appears burglars could be getting off the hook unnecessarily too, with one in three householders reporting they wont report a crime as they believe the punishment wont be severe enough, or because the culprit wont be caught.
Some believed the process of reporting a crime would be too time-consuming, and one in five said they wouldnt do anything if they heard an alarm going off in their neighbourhood.
And despite putting themselves at risk of burglary, more than three quarters (86 per cent) of people say they wont make an insurance claim if it affects their excess or premiums. UK Home Security Week began on Monday, September 23.
Michael Fraser, crime author, former presenter of BBCs Beat the Burglar, and ambassador for UK Home Security Week, says most burglaries can be avoided with simple and sometimes free security improvements.

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Sep 24, 2013) - New smarthome consumer research from Parks Associates finds nearly 10% of U.S. homeowners with broadband at home, approximately 5 million households, considered purchasing a home security system over the past year but ultimately did not acquire one. Moreover, roughly one-half are still open to adoption. Just 2% of U.S. broadband households actually acquired a security system over the same time period.
"Expanding the Base: From Security to Smarthome," a project featuring results from multiple 2013 consumer surveys of U.S. broadband households, finds two-thirds of households without a security system express interest in "smarthome" systems that provide a mixture of safety, security, and home control features. This level of interest bodes well for service providers like AT&T Digital Life and Comcast that offer smarthome service packages.
"The recession dampened the market for security, but there is demand for new systems," said John Barrett, director, consumer analytics, Parks Associates. "The challenge is getting the right mix of features and pricing as well as communicating to consumers the value of a smarthome system."
Parks Associates data indicates that monthly service fees are a key sticking point for those considering adoption.
"Integrating security into a 'smarthome system' creates a new value proposition within this market and will help lure new adopters," Barrett said. "Companies looking to increase the likelihood of adoption of professional security with smarthome features must increase the value proposition for the overall package and service."
"Expanding the Base: From Security to Smarthome" analyzes the potential of growing the home security market through integrated, Internet-enabled packages, including research on current security owners and households considering security adoption.
