"Smart" Internet-connected home security systems are meant to protect consumers from intruders but the top devices don't require even the bare minimum for password protection that we expect for our email and other web services, according to a new study from HP.
HP bought 10 home-monitoring devices like video cameras and alarm systems and tested them to see how easy they are to hack, Jason Schmitt, the vice president and general manager of HP's enterprise security products team, told NBC News.

All 10 of the devices had "significant vulnerabilities" in the security of the device itself, HP said.

HP which declined to name the products it tested said the most basic of those security holes involved poor password practices.
Some devices didn't require strong passwords, while all 10 of the products tested failed to lock the account after a certain number of failed password attempts.

Home security doesnt have to be expensive any more. In fact, you can get peace of mind for a few hundred bucks upfront, and never pay another dime. Its one of the benefits of the Internet of Things we keep hearing about. DIY home security is probably best realized with Scout, which lets you migrate between connected monitoring and home-grown security. Already one of the better options around, Scout just got a lot better with a new IFTTT channel.
The IFTTT channel has a mere six featured recipes , but theyre good ones. Really good. The Scout IFTTT channel becomes even better with some other Internet of Things gadgets, too. IF you need to dig a little deeper, Scout has four full pages of recipes ready to go.
If you have a SmartThings siren, you can choose to have it go off when Scouts alarm is triggered. A Lifx bulb can be set to flash when your alarm is triggered, too.
For an ever stronger automation feel, you can have Scout arm or disarm depending on your location or time of day. Arrive home, and Scout disarms. At night, Scout can be set to automatically alarm itself, giving you peace of mind. Scout also works with IFTTT's new Do buttons.
Perhaps the handiest (read: my favorite) channel is Scouts workaround for Manything. If you use Manything to turn an old phone into a security camera, you can have it triggered when your Scout alarm goes off. Its a brilliant way to get home monitoring without spending a dime.
After reviewing Scout, I was sold on the features. With a new IFTTT channel, it only gets better.

DeLAND, Fla. -
Volusia County deputies are looking for two men who are seen on video casing a home before robbing it.
It happened Thursday afternoon at a house on Sixth Avenue in Daytona Park Estates in DeLand.
The victim, Ann Russo, was at work when she received a call from her home security company.
Russo said she logged onto her tablet and watched as two men inside her home took her television.
"The idea that while we are at work, people are choosing not to work but break into our homes and take our stuff, that is horrible," Russo told Local 6. "You see them in the video, they kind of turn and walk around the house and that's when they came and they broke in to the front door."
The two guys took off with electronics, some of them replacement items after her home was burglarized twice before last year.
While they got away with her stuff, they left behind "great video, they left fingerprints," said Russo.
They also left Russo questioning her safety, at least until they're caught.
"These two guys, their faces are out there and I'm confident that they are going to go to prison," said Russo.
