A. Two. One to listen to the pitch, and the other to check e-mail on his phone and then ask a clueless question about the target market.
So...now the news: Cambridge-based ByteLight, which spun out of Boston University's Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center and took part last year in the Summer@Highland accelerator program, has raised $1.25 million in its first round of funding. The money comes from individual investors and California-based Vantage Point Capital Partners.
ByteLight is designing a system that's sort of like indoor GPS. Special LED light bulbs are programmed to flicker in a certain pattern. When the camera in your cell phone can "see" the light from several of them, it gets a fix on your location... even if there's no WiFi, GPS, or wireless coverage where you are. The company says its positoning is accurate to about one meter, and that it can be calculated within a second. The bulbs' imperceptible flicker pattern can also trigger information to pop up on your phone's screen, sending a special offer based on where you are in a store, or telling you the current security wait time at the nearest airport checkpoint. ByteLight's founders are Aaron Ganick, right, and Dan Ryan.
ByteLight has been working on prototype bulbs at its office space in Kendall Square's Dogpatch Labs, but the company says its plan is to license its technology to established LED lighting manufacturers. "The value proposition for LED lighting has traditionally been framed in terms of improved energy efficiency and longer life cycles," according to a company press release. "ByteLight is enhancing the commercial value of LEDs by turning them into more than just sources of illumination, thereby accelerating adoption of LED technology in the market."
The company says it is working with several stores and museums in the Boston area that will be test sites for the ByteLight bulbs. One of those is Boston's Museum of Science, according to a message the company posted on the fundraising site AngelList earlier this year.
I wrote about ByteLight last November, in a column headlined "Moving mapping technology indoors."

ByteLight raises $1.25M in funding -
October 16, 2012 by
Mr HomeBuilder
ByteLight, a Cambridge startup specializing in LED-based indoor positioning technology, said today it has received $1.25 million in funding from individual and institutional investors, led by VantagePoint Capital Partners.
ByteLight said it will use the funding to build its team, deploy at pilot locations and expand its ecosystem of lighting partners. The company added its LED lighting-based indoor positioning solution helps commercial and enterprise building owners, public safety officials, retail outlets, airports, museums and convention centers target customized information, special offers and other data directly to users based on their precise location inside a building.
Accurate indoor positioning has been described as the holy grail of location-based services, said Aaron Ganick, CEO and co-founder of ByteLight. Our platform makes it easy for shoppers to navigate retail stores and find products, manages and optimizes enterprise employee operations, turns mobile devices into tour guides within a museum or public building, and helps people find colleagues and booths while attending trade shows or other events -- the applications for this technology are truly endless.
Company enabled lights transmit proprietary signals which can be picked up by camera-equipped mobile devices. Once signals are detected, the device then calculates its position without the need for an active network connection, ByteLight said.

China first LED lighting subsidy to reach CNY2 billion
Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES[Thursday 11 October 2012]
The list of firms that have been chosen in China's first round of LED lighting subsidies has been announced. Market observers believe the 39 firms will obtain a total subsidy for 83.7 million units of LED lighting. The total bid will likely reach CNY2 billion (US$318 million).
China-based Kingsun Optoelectronic and Lampearl obtained approximately of 10% of the bid.
For this round of bids, 113 firms participated and 39 firms were selected. This also coincides with China's policy of banning the use of incandescent lighting in October. Among the subsidized 87.3 million units of LED lighting, 78.5 million units are for indoor lighting, the focus of the bid.
Philips is the only international firm that qualified, however, the firm only obtained 100,000 units of indoor and 30,000 of outdoor lighting. Kingsun and Lampearl obtained a total bid of 400,000 units of indoor and 70,000 of outdoor lighting.
Market observers noted that Taiwan-based upstream LED chipmakers are to benefit from the subsidy as the firms are one of the main providers for indoor lighting.
LED chipmakers such as Epistar, Formosa Epitaxy, and Genesis Photonics have been emphasizing high-brightness products while Lextar focuses on vertical integration, and these firms are likely to be included in the supply chain. LED packaging houses such as Unity Opto and Everlight have been forming strategic alliances with China-based firms. However, China has a large number of LED packaging houses, hence it will be more difficult for these firms to be included in the supply chain.

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:
World Lighting Fixtures Market, Freedonia
http://www.reportlinker.com/p01008678/World-Lighting-Fixtures-Market-Freedonia.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Lighting_Equipment_Manufacturing
Global demand to rise 6.9% annually through 2016
Global demand for lighting fixtures is projected to climb 6.9 percent annually through 2016 to $153 billion. Product sales will be driven primarily by a strong global rebound in motor vehicle output and an acceleration in building construction activity. Efforts to conserve energy and convert to more efficient light source technologies will also boost gains, particularly as sales of incandescent and other less efficient lamps are being phased out through much of the world. Increased use of these higher-end fixtures will also contribute to gains in value terms. In the developing world, ongoing efforts to modernize the building stock, coupled with increasing urbanization and rising incomes will further aid advances.
China, US to post aboveaverage gains in demand
Through 2016, China alone will account for 36 percent of all additional demand, retaining its position as the largest lighting fixture market. The US, the second largest market, will also post above-average gains, itself accounting for 18 percent of additional global sales, as the country rebounds from a reduced 2011 base. However, sales gains are expected to be the fastest in India, a developing market for lighting fixtures. Above-average growth is also forecast in lower-volume markets such as Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa, and Vietnam. Although increases will generally not be as robust, lighting fixture demand in established lighting fixture markets such as Western Europe and Japan will improve from reduced 2011 bases. The rate of growth through 2016 will be attributable in large part to a strong upturn in automotive industry production after a period of decline. Sales of lighting fixtures in developed areas will also be spurred by improving economic activity, leading to a pickup in consumer spending and recoveries in construction activity.
Nonportable indoor fixtures to record fastest growth
Nonportable indoor lighting fixtures will record the fastest gains of any major product segment through 2016, fueled by a recovery in residential construction spending and an acceleration in nonresidential building activity. Vehicular fixtures will expand at the next fastest rate, stimulated by increases in global motor vehicle production, including a recovery in key markets such as the US, Japan, and Western Europe, where vehicle output had declined sharply into 2011. Demand for portable lighting fixtures will be more moderate, partly because many newer light technologies are designed to fit most legacy portable fixtures.
