SkyyGreens Aquaponics Now Chicago's First Licensed Indoor Farm - October 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Sep 25, 2012) - A year and two days after the City of Chicago amended zoning codes to allow local urban agriculture, the city of Chicago has moved to the forefront of urban center food production by licensing Chicago's first indoor (vertical) farm company, SkyyGreens Aquaponics.

Two weeks ago, SkyyGreens Aquaponics became the first and, at present, only licensed indoor farm in Chicago. In July of last year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave a prominent speech highlighting local farms job creation potential within Chicago city limits.Soon thereafter, the city of Chicago's city council backed the mayor by voting to reduce zoning laws clearing the path for urban farming within Chicago.

SkyyGreens Aquaponics, founded by former classmates from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, was formed out of frustration in trying to source local organic produce year round.Like many urban consumers, Chicagoans were looking for local, organic produce options. However, due the Chicago climate, traditional outdoor farms -- even if 'hyperlocal' and within city limits -- could not satisfy year around demand.SkyyGreens had a solution: take the farm indoors.

In the year following the mayor's announcement and city council vote, SkyyGreens researched and tested best practices for growing produce indoors. The team also experimented with lighting technology and various aquaponic/hydroponic methods to determine the optimal indoor environment to grow produce. After countless tasting sessions with chefs that featured local produce, the outcome was always the same, "this tastes great, but when will more be available?"

So the SkyyGreens team next tackled the business problem. Can an indoor farm startup become a scalable, profitable enterprise?SkyyGreens put their business assumptions to the test this past summer in the startup capital of the world, Silicon Valley, CA.SkyyGreens presented their business model to a group of venture capitalists and 'super' angel investors as part of a business plan competition where SkyyGreens tied for first place. This gave the SkyyGreens team additional confidence that their indoor farm was ready for the market!

Headquartered in Chicago, SkyyGreens is committed to providing local, organic produce to major cities 365 days a year. For more information, contact SkyyGreens at 1-800-723-3093 or http://www.skyygreens.com. Follow SkyyGreens on Facebook.com/skyygreens or Twitter @skyygreens.

Entrepreneur wants to sell safer smoke - September 24, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A Mobile entrepreneur is hoping his "e-cig" shop will help smokers cope with the city's smoking ban, set to take effect in October.

On Oct. 1, a smoking ordinance passed by the Mobile City Council takes affect. The ordinance bans smoking in most businesses and public outdoor areas. Ernest Jackson plans to open a shop which, by selling electronic cigarettes, could allow smokers to continue their nicotine habit while circumventing the ban.

E-Cigarette is nowhere in the ban, so where you would normally be able to smoke, now, come October 1 you won't be able to, said Jackson, who plans to call his shop Smokers Dream. You should still be able to use these without a problem.

Jackson's store opens October 1, the same day the smoking ban takes effect. The electronic cigarettes that will be sold there are inhalers that vaporize a nicotine solution into an aerosol mist.

Authors of a 2010 study by Boston University's School of Public Health said evidence shows the e-Cig's to be safer than tobacco cigarettes and comparable in toxicity to nicotine replacement products.

Jackson touted the benefits for those who dont smoke as well.

It's just water vapor, so there's no second-hand smoke, said Jackson.

The e-Cig device originated in China and made its U.S. appearance three years ago. Jackson said the devices are made of nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, distilled water and flavoring.

I was at my doctor's office and we were actually in the doctor's room and he allowed me to smoke it, said Michael Williams of Semmes.

Jackson said customers often ask him the same question: Can it help me quit smoking?

Expert: utilise daylight to maximum - September 19, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Bonnie James/Deputy News Editor Utilising daylight to the maximum for indoor lighting, changing room colours to brighter and lighter shades and replacing halogen spotlights with LED lamps are key to low energy lighting solutions, an expert has said. Any reduction in energy used for lighting is a reduction on the cooling load, explained Mohamed Jaber, head of electrical engineering at KEO International Consultants. He was giving a presentation on Low energy lighting for hotels, at the launch event on Monday for the Green Hotel Interest Group by Qatar Green Building Council. Lighting requirements have come down to 9W per sq m from 25W per sq m. LED lights are more frequently used in projects and prices have come down, Jaber said. LED spotlights of 10W could be used to replace 50W halogen spotlights. Any reduction in the lighting levels, bring down the usage of watts per hour and in turn lowers the cooling loads, especially considering that halogen lamps emit a lot of heat. If halogen lamps have a lifespan of 2,000 hours, LED lamps could last between 35,000 to 50,000 hours, providing several years of life at some initial extra cost. The disposal of LED lights is also environment friendly as they do not contain mercury or any other hazardous metals or chemicals. The use of daylight sensors indoors reduce indoor lighting energy load depending on the intensity of the available light. Jaber also referred to light pollution caused by the common practice of lighting up the exterior of buildings with powerful lamps. Each of those conventional lamps, which use at least 1000W, could be replaced with LED lights of adequate power and deployed in a more focused manner so as to maximise the illumination, he observed. Replacing house lamps with LED lights is also a viable option, Jaber added, citing his own experience.

Historic Building Reduces Energy Costs with Relight Kits - September 11, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Landmark Office Building in Cleveland Business District Renovates Lighting with Acuity Brands Relight Kits

New indoor ambient lighting saves energy, improves work environment and enhances aesthetics in 381,000-square-foot Rose Building - corporate headquarters of Medical Mutual of Ohio.

ATLANTA - Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI), a leading provider of comprehensive, energy-saving lighting solutions, announces that its Lithonia Lighting high-performance volumetric Relight kits were installed in the corporate headquarters of Medical Mutual of Ohio located in the historic Rose Building in Cleveland, Ohio. The extensive lighting renovation project was completed with no work disruption, and is estimated to decrease the building's annual energy use for lighting by more than 50 percent, or from 1.9 million kilowatt hours to about 906,000 million kilowatt hours.

Eco Engineering LLC, a specialized provider of energy-efficient lighting services and upgrades, identified and implemented the lighting solution for Medical Mutual of Ohio utilizing 2,600 volumetric Relight kits. The Relight kits were used to retrofit the deep-cell parabolic luminaires throughout the building's interior. The 2' x 4' volumetric Relight kits feature energy-efficient RT8R recessed lighting components that were quickly and easily installed into existing fixtures, eliminating the need to break the ceiling plane.

The energy-efficient Relight assemblies are expected to reduce electrical demand from the onset of installation, including a reduction in the air conditioning load because the new lighting generates less heat. The building's total annual energy usage is also expected to decrease by more than 50 percent, or from 2.5 million kilowatt hours to about 1.2 million kilowatt hours.

"Volumetric Relight kits are an ideal solution for renovating inefficient and outdated lighting systems," said Kurt Vogel, Lithonia Lighting Director of Product and Market Development for Relight. "In addition to providing energy savings, the Relight kits improve the quality of lighting by delivering the ideal amount of soft, comfortable light throughout the space. The visually uncomfortable checker-board or cave effect created by parabolic and lensed troffer systems is completely eliminated."

Don Green, Director of Facility Services for Medical Mutual of Ohio, was confident in the solution to use retrofit kits from the start. "Lithonia Lighting Relight kits offered a cost-effective solution. We saved on labor because there was no need to rewire. The fast installation process also met our needs for minimal disruption to daily operations," said Green.
