Cooper Lighting Solutions Help Long Lake Elementary School Become a Model of Energy Efficiency - April 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga., April 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials at Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) recognized that Long Lake Elementary School needed a major overhaul. Out of renovation options, the District opted for a complete rebuild of the nearly 50-year-old building in an effort to make the new school a model of energy efficiency and sustainability. To help achieve its overall goal of creating a high-quality, LEED-certified visual learning environment, the school turned to energy-efficient solutions from Cooper Lighting, an industry leader committed to delivering innovative products and driving transformational technology in the lighting industry.

    (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20101214/MM17721LOGO)

"The project originated from the need to replace an outdated elementary school that was built in the 1950s and out of options for renovation," says John E. Dancer, AIA, vice president, Cornerstone Architects. "The project is part of an overall effort to bring the TCAPS elementary schools into the twenty-first century, and to design efficient 'Learning Centers' to serve TCAPS students in today's world."

The building design team's lighting goal for the new $8.3 million, 50,752 square foot facility was to provide a comfortable atmosphere with flexible controls for the interior and sufficient illumination for safety in the exterior areas of the school. After analyzing the project based on cost and lighting calculations, the TCAPS design team selected a wide range of highly efficient interior fluorescent fixtures and exterior LED products from Cooper Lighting.

"To satisfy the interior lighting goals, we designed recessed, pendant and high-bay linear fluorescent fixtures with multiple controls to allow users to determine the level of light that best suited their needs," says Jason VanBrocklin, PE, president, Nealis Engineering, Inc.

The fixtures included Cooper's Portfolio downlights in the media center and corridors, as well as multiple products from the company's Corelite and Metalux lines used in the classrooms, offices, cafeteria, gymnasium and other locations throughout the school.

For each exterior space, the design team specified conventional lamping with an LED alternative in order to compare initial cost during the bidding process. For the entries and exits, compact fluorescent wall packs were specified; for the parking lots and driveway, pole-mounted metal halide fixtures were chosen. The resulting analysis, based on cost and lighting calculations, overwhelmingly favored LED fixtures for all three applications. This guided the design team to choose LED products including Invue Entri LED Wall Mount Luminaires for the entries and exits and McGraw-Edison Ventus Outdoor LED Area Luminaires for the parking lots, main entrance and along the driveway.

"The biggest lesson learned from this project has to be the even distribution of light that the Cooper Lighting LED fixtures produce," says VanBrocklin. "There are no hot spots directly underneath the pole-mounted fixtures, creating a more even distribution of light."

Cooper Lighting's outdoor LED luminaires incorporate patent-pending modular LightBAR technology that features the company's patented AccuLED Optics system, setting the industry benchmark for reliable photometric performance, scalability and energy efficiency. The system's unique application-specific design allows lumen and energy output to be customized to fulfill the exact needs of the outdoor space -- eliminating wasted energy and obtrusive spill light. The technology provides up to 75 percent energy savings over standard H.I.D. systems while also providing a 50,000+ hour rated life, six times longer than the traditional metal halide sources found in most outdoor applications.

Church sees new kind of light with energy upgrades - April 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rifle Seventh Day Adventist Church Elder Ron Cloninger shows off the energy efficiency improvements the church has done over the past year. Energy efficient indoor lighting combined with solar energy panels mounted on the church roof, seen here, dramatically cut the building's energy bills.

Cam Burns Special to The Citizen Telegram

Seeking to save money on their utility bills, church board members contacted Garfield Clean Energy and signed up for the Garfield Clean Energy Challenge.

As a participant in that program, they received energy coaching services, which helped them get lined up with a free lighting audit from Franklin Energy, the company that manages Xcel Energy's Small Business Lighting program.

The church also took advantage of a low-cost full-building audit that Xcel Energy provides its customers. The two reports indicated the church could significantly reduce its power consumption by turning down their programmable thermostats even more and installing more efficient lighting.

Unfortunately, the thermostat idea was a nonstarter, said Elder Ron Cloninger.

We would turn down the temperature if it weren't for the piano, he explained. Below 60, it goes out of tune.

That left lighting as the preferred target. And the church took the advice to heart, spending $5,404 on a building-wide overhaul.

In the sanctuary, energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs replaced the old incandescent lights. In the building's hallways, classrooms and restrooms, energy-saving T-8 electronic ballast lights replaced the old, power-hungry T-12 magnetic ballast lights.

Motion sensors in the restrooms now ensure that the lights come on only when needed. The church also upgraded its exit signs to LED models.

O.C. firm invents solution for ugly lighting - April 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you think the plastic fixtures that light up steps and stairs around the house are plain at best, ugly at worst, you're not alone.

Gary and Dana Butler, who have been making lighting fixtures for the housing and commercial markets since they bought a small manufacturing facility in Newport Beach in 1986, certainly do. Or did.

(As a side note, the Butlers were the subject of one of the first It's Your Business columns I wrote back in September 1988. At that time their company was called Aggressive Lighting. They also had Light Adventure, a retail showroom in Costa Mesa that they closed in 1997. Now their company Kane Shrader, named for their son, makes unique lighting fixtures designed by Gary, and a separate company Jayne Young converts old copper pots into unique lighting.)

When the 2007-2009 recession slowed their business, Gary decided he could design something more attractive than the step lights at their Coto de Caza home. He created an onyx stone cover that Dana says even she can install.

"I'm not that savvy with tools, and I can put this on in five minutes," she says.

Neighbors Joe and Marci DuBois loved the lights when they saw them at the Butlers' home. Their enthusiasm quickly moved into the formation of a new business, The Cover Company LLC in Rancho Santa Margarita, to make and sell what the two couples named Designer Step Light Covers.

The step lights can be used for indoor staircases or outdoor patio steps.

"Marci was the driving force," Dana says. "She begged us to make the step lights commercially. Gary said no because he had his hands full."

Gary, who has made lighting for more than 25 years, oversees production, having the parts made in Lynwood and powder coated in Santa Ana. The onyx stone is cut in Huntington Beach.

"We're doing it very grass roots," Dana says. "It's all made in the United States. We've ground the prices down as much as we could to discourage foreign competition. Sales are online only right now... and Joe and Marci do the packaging and shipping in their garage."

The degree of difficulty involved in managing the MR16's discreet size and internal power supply and the intense requirements for brightness of a 50-watt equivalent renders its design and manufacture a complex challenge. Competitive attempts at reaching these high levels of performance have resulted in concessions that have been viewed as unacceptable to the market. No such sacrifice is required with the Definity MR16 HO Series.

At only 8 watts and a 25,000 hour life rating, Lighting Science Group's new DEFINITY MR16 HO LED bulb is up to 33% more efficient than competitive products while staying within the industry accepted form factor and not using any moving parts like fans to achieve its superior performance. "A commitment to superior technology underwrites all Lighting Science Group operations; that's why our customers can rest assured that they're offered the most advanced and widest selection of LED lighting products," said Jim Haworth, chairman and chief executive officer of the Company. "We believe that our new MR16 HO, which couples unparalleled efficiency and incredible performance, is a significant advancement in the science of light and another step forward in the development of a more efficient, sustainable and brighter energy future."

The new bulb joins the Company's suite of products that have found applications ranging from use in NASA outer space ventures; to artistic designs that span skyscraper silhouettes; to everyday, practical implementations for American homes and businesses that save families and business owners significant amounts of money on electricity bills. On the global stage, Lighting Science Group has become synonymous with the ultra-efficient lighting revolution, and at home the Company is most commonly viewed as the fulfillment of America's clean technology promise.
