Brightech Solar String Lights Review: Are They Worth It? – Tested by – Bob Vila - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Photo: Debbie Wolfe for Bob Vila

Outdoor lighting is one of the best enhancements for any home exterior, whether for patios and decks or walkways and home entrances. Lighting extends the functionality of outdoor living spaces into the night and passively boosts home security. One of the quickest, easiest, and least expensive types of outdoor illumination is solar string lights. Solar string lights incorporate a small solar panel to charge a built-in battery during the day, which powers the lights after dark. They are an excellent choice for temporary or permanent installation wherever access to plug-in power is limited.

Over the past decade, Brightechhas emerged as one of the leading brands for solar string lights. It continues to build a loyal customer base by offering affordable designer lighting for all areas of the home. The company features a wide range of interior and exterior lighting solutions such as floor lamps, table lamps, and string lights, including the Brightech Ambience Pro solar string lights that I recently tested. These heavy-duty solar LED string lights, with their classic Edison-style bulbs, looked great and performed even better. Keep reading for performance details and to find out why I consider them to be some of the best solar string lights for indoor or outdoor installations.

    Rating: 8.9/10

Get the Brightech Ambience Pro solar string lights at:

Brightech Ambience Pro solar string lights are commercial-grade LED lights constructed with heavy-duty hardware for extended durability. Twelve Edison-style 1-watt S14 LED bulbs, spaced at 20-inch intervals spanning 20 feet of the 27-foot cable, add a classic aesthetic as they emit warm white (2700K) light. The weatherproof, shatterproof bulbs are suitable for indoor or outdoor use, with heat resistance to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 6-foot tail of the cable connects to the solar panel, allowing for flexible placement in the sunniest location. On clear sunny days, the panel charges the built-in battery within 6 hours. A sliding on/off switch on the back of the solar panel controls the integrated photocell. In the on position, the lights automatically turn on when the sun goes down. In the off position, the lights remain off. The battery powers the lights for up to 6 hours on a full charge.

I tested the Brightech Ambience Pro solar lights alongside several other string lights, and I chose them as the top overall pick for a few reasons. I preferred the heavy-duty construction and classic appearance of the 1-watt bulbs over other types because they gave a more mature aesthetic to the space. Although the runtime was not as long as some of the other options, the 6 hours of lighting was more than enough for outdoor entertaining, starting at sundown and running from about 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

I also appreciated the installation flexibility. Each bulb fixture had its own integrated hanging loop to suspend from a cup hook, nail, or zip tie. Also, the adjustable-angle solar panel mounting bracket was compatible with the included ground stake or squeeze clamp, and it has the option to be fastened directly to a post or wall with screws.

The only real downside I discovered was the relatively short length, which wasnt quite enough for my particular installation needs. With its 20 feet of illumination, this set of string lights only lit about half of my space. Of course, I could easily buy a second string, but those with larger areas may want to consider this 48-foot-long version with 15 bulbs.

This was a really nice-looking light set with plenty of installation flexibility, providing bright light for the advertised 6-hour runtime and equipped with heavy-duty hardware for a long working life. At 27 feet long and with just 12 bulbs, one string may not be enough for a complete patio installation, but its a great starting point and the price is right for adding on more as needed.

Photo: Debbie Wolfe for Bob Vila

Setting up these solar string lights could hardly have been easier. I spent a few minutes measuring, marking, and installing finish nails in the locations where each light would hang. Then, starting with the LED fixture farthest from the solar panel, I hung each bulb by its hang loop. Lastly, I installed the solar panel on its ground stake. The whole process took about 15 minutes.

Its important to note that this string light is significantly heavier than a string of Christmas lights. The cable alone is heavier, and the bulbs are much larger. So although hanging them was not difficult, I had to ensure that the anchor points were secure. I used nails in wood trim; hooks with adhesive backing would be another good option. For an overhead installation, it might be best to install a guy wire from which to hang the lights, instead of relying on the tensile strength of the string lights to hold themselves up.

The Brightech Ambience solar string lights were a step or two above most of the others in terms of quality. Fairy lights and cheaper string lights are single-use products. When one or several LEDs stop working, the string of lights gets tossed in the trash and folks go out and buy a new one. But this set is built with wear-resistant components and replaceable LED bulbs for a long operational life indoors or out.

The heavy cable construction was much more substantial than the braided wire used in the competition. Also, the threaded-base S14 LEDs were a nice touch, making them easier to replace compared to similar options, like these LED string lights that incorporate bulbs with delicate two-pin bases. I also liked the robust solar panel, especially the sliding on/off switch instead of a pushbutton. The sliding switch indicated at a glance whether the unit was on or off, which isnt the case with a push button.

Photo: Debbie Wolfe for Bob Vila

The Brightech Ambience Pro solar light set looks great and is durably made of quality materials. It is easy to use and consistently works as advertisedand maybe better. The 27-foot string features 20 illuminated feet, with 12 single-watt bulbs. But at prices ranging from about $42 to $70 (depending on the retailer), is it worth the money?

I compared the prices of similar string lights sold at Ace Hardware, Lowes, The Home Depot, Target, and Walmart. Without going too deep into the rabbit hole, I discovered two important bits of information. First, most of them offer at least a partial selection of Brightech lighting; and second, the quality-to-price ratio of this set is at least as good as anything else out there. In the $40 to $50 range, I would consider it a fair value, maybe a bargain. At $70, though, I would continue shopping.

Photo: Debbie Wolfe for Bob Vila

Lighting is one of the best ways to boost functionality and security in an outdoor space, and solar string lights make it fast, easy, and inexpensive. For great looks with low-maintenance installation, it pays to go with a high-quality, durable light set that charges fast and lights the space well into the night. Brightech Ambience Pro LED solar string lights are a great solution.

I really enjoyed testing this light set. The Edison-style bulbs added a nice classic aesthetic; the battery charged fully with only about a half day of clear, direct sunlight; and the LEDs illuminated the space for a full 6 hours per charge. Although it was only a weeklong test, I feel reasonably confident in the durability of the set, in part because of the heavy-duty wiring and threaded bulb sockets, and also because of small details like the generously sized solar panel with a sliding switch rather than a button. Its not the cheapest set around, but it comes at a fair price and operates on a tier above the competition.

10 Gen Z-inspired office interior design ideas for improved workplace wellness – Hindustan Times - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Amidst a rising emphasis on workplace well-being, companies have begun acknowledging the necessity of establishing healthier and more comfortable work environments. This is particularly important for the growing number of Gen Z employees entering the workforce, as they place a high value on their physical and mental well-being. To attract and retain this demographic, companies invest in innovative interior design concepts that prioritise employee wellness, directly impacting productivity, engagement, and retention. The growing emphasis on wellness in the workplace has led to significant changes in corporate interiors by companies across the globe.

Traditional office spaces, characterised by incandescent lighting and immobile cubicles, are reinvented by Gen Z concepts prioritising employee comfort and well-being. This shift towards wellness-focused design is driven by recognising that happy, healthy employees are more productive and engaged. (Also read: Creative ideas to incorporate bold and bright hues into your home decor )

Hardik Pandit, Architect and Director, APICES Studio Pvt Ltd, shared with HT Lifestyle some key design concepts that are adopted by top companies focusing on Gen Zs, who are driving the need for productive, healthy and flexible future workspaces.

Biophilic design has gained popularity recently as businesses recognise the benefits of introducing natural plants into the workplace. Such designs promote mental and physical health, reduce stress and increase productivity. Natural lighting, indoor plants, and inside-out experience can together frame into a biophilic design, that can help minimise strain on the eyes, enhance air quality, and create a sense of connection with nature.

Companies that include these characteristics in the workplace design can create a more attractive and relaxed environment that encourages employee well-being and happiness. This, in turn, can lead to higher engagement, productivity and turnover while lowering absenteeism and half-hearted performance.

Gen Z values workplace flexibility. This idea is to create a flexible workspace that supports collaborative and individual work, to help employees feel in charge. Flexible workspaces need a combination of socialising spaces, formal and informal collaborative spaces, huddle rooms, sit-to-stand desks, and focussed workspaces. Breakout spaces with ergonomically designed seating and sit-to-stand desks encourage informal collaborations and physical wellness.

Focussed workspaces allow uninterrupted concentration. Companies may design a workspace that is more flexible to the different demands of their workforce and the nature of the business by giving a variety of options for employees, ultimately leading to higher productivity and job satisfaction.

Ergonomically designs are a crucial aspect of wellness at the workplace, especially for Gen Z employees who spend long hours at their desks. Good posture and comfortable seating can help reduce physical strain and fatigue, leading to better health, concentration and greater productivity. Employers have recognised the importance of ergonomic design and have started investing in height-adjustable workstations, ergonomic chairs, and other elements. By prioritising ergonomic design, companies improve employee well-being and reduce the risk of workplace injuries and absenteeism due to discomfort or pain.

The use of colour psychology in workplace design has become increasingly popular as companies recognise the impact of colour on mood and well-being. Calming colours like blues and greens or pastel tones are often used to promote relaxation, while energising colours like yellows and oranges stimulate creativity and productivity. By strategically incorporating colours into the workplace, companies can create a more positive and productive work environment that caters to the well-being of employees.

Gen Z workers are known for valuing individuality and self-expression, and the ability to personalise their workspace is a crucial factor in improving motivation and engagement. Hot-desking and remote working trends have made it even more critical for employees to feel a sense of ownership over their workspace. Designing workstations to add space for an employees affectionate belongings like a coffee mug or displaying memorable photos or inspiring posters can create a more personalised and comfortable work environment. This can boost creativity and productivity, increasing job satisfaction and retention.

Adding the latest technological advancements in workplace design can help create a modern and innovative workspace that appeals to the tech-savvy Gen Z workers. Having reliable and fast internet connectivity, digital project management tools and cloud storage solutions can also help streamline workflows and improve communication. With updates in technology being an essential part of daily life, integrating it seamlessly into the workplace experience through IoT, AI and VR can make employees feel more connected and productive.

Creating designated spaces for wellness activities like meditation, yoga, or exercising can help employees recharge and manage stress levels. A dedicated mothers room gives an emotional connection to the employees with their newly born and less worry when at work. Dedicated bins for general waste and e-waste allow segregated waste management throughout the workplace premises. These must-have dedicated spaces demonstrate a commitment to employee well-being.

Incorporating nature-inspired materials into workplace design can bring the benefits of nature indoors, creating a sense of calm and tranquillity. The use of wood, stone, or bamboo can evoke feelings of warmth and comfort, making employees feel more connected to the natural world. Additionally, these materials can add a touch of uniqueness and personality to a workspace, promoting a sense of individuality and creativity.

Noise in the office can be a significant source of distraction and stress. Soundproofing materials and designated quiet zones can help lower noise levels and increase productivity.

Lighting has a significant impact on a persons mood and productivity. Allowing access to natural light or implementing dynamic lighting systems can aid in regulating circadian cycles and overall well-being.

Finally, using these design elements in the workplace can significantly impact employee well-being, productivity, and engagement. Companies can build a more happy and successful work environment that responds to the needs and expectations of Gen Z workers by prioritising health and wellness while designing a workplace, concludes Hardik.

Millions of Birds Fly Over Illinois During Annual Northward Migration – NBC Chicago - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

L.L. Bean has just added a third shift at its factory in Brunswick, Maine, in an attempt to keep up with demand for its iconic boot.

Orders have quadrupled in the past few years as the boots have become more popular among a younger, more urban crowd.

The company says it saw the trend coming and tried to prepare, but orders outpaced projections. They expect to sell 450,000 pairs of boots in 2014.

People hoping to have the boots in time for Christmas are likely going to be disappointed. The bootsare back ordered through February and even March.

"I've been told it's a good problem to have but I"m disappointed that customers not gettingwhat they want as quickly as they want," said Senior Manufacturing Manager Royce Haines.

Customers like, Mary Clifford, tried to order boots on line, but they were back ordered until January.

"I was very surprised this is what they are known for and at Christmas time you can't get them when you need them," said Clifford.

People who do have boots are trying to capitalize on the shortage and are selling them on Ebay at a much higher cost.

L.L. Bean says it has hired dozens of new boot makers, but it takes up to six months to train someone to make a boot.

The company has also spent a million dollars on new equipment to try and keep pace with demand.

Some customers are having luck at the retail stores. They have a separate inventory, and while sizes are limited, those stores have boots on the shelves.

Outdoor living room mistakes 5 errors to avoid, and the tips garden … – Homes & Gardens - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

Backyards deserve to be decorated with the same love and attention as other rooms in the house, but it is all too easy to make mistakes when designing an outdoor living room.

Until we turned our backyards into extensions of our homes, we may have ventured to sit outside only when entertaining guests or for a relaxing hour at the weekend. Now we want to use our outdoor living space year-round and every day if the weather allows.

If you want to get it right the first time all it takes is a little planning, design know-how, and expert advice.

There are tons of outdoor living room ideas and tricks of the trade to help turn an unused or unloved backyard or garden room into something stylish and sophisticated, whatever its shape and proportions.

So whether you're working with a small backyard, courtyard, or patio, you can avoid making these common outdoor living room mistakes.

Architectural features are ripe for decoration and design, so don't ignore their potential.

An outdoor fireplace with a chimney adds an architectural feature to a garden while also being somewhere to linger near when the nights are chillier, thereby extending the use of the space from spring into fall. This is the London home of interior designer Alison Henry (opens in new tab) where a gas fireplace has an antique surround.

Its somewhere we gather for warmth in the evening with seats in outdoor fabric which can be left out in all weather, says Alison. I created an extension of the indoor space outdoors and considered it as an additional room, not only in the selection of finishes, color scheme, and furnishings but also the lighting to create the various moods for different times of the year and functions.

(Image credit: Mark Latchford / HollandGreen )

A backyard should be loved and enjoyed, which is why it is vital to plan with entertainment in mind.

With the increasing appetite for outdoor kitchens comes the need for a shaded place to eat and entertain in summer while providing a source of heat for cooler days and nights. The team at HollandGreen (opens in new tab) designed this contemporary pergola to meet such demands. An automated louvered roof allows the slants of sunlight to travel through on summer days while integrated heaters provide warmth when temperatures drop.

We were asked to design a Balinese-inspired spa garden, explains Mark Latchford, director of HollandGreen Landscapes. The result boasts a 14-seater hot tub below a James Bond-style sliding deck, alongside an outdoor kitchen, 12-seater bar, wood-burning pizza oven and a barbecue. The idea was to have multifunctional spaces that could be used all year round providing a central hub for entertaining.

Thinking about your outdoor living room in isolation can lead to a disjointed space.

Contemporary architecture lends itself to creating the perfect hybrid indoor/outdoor spaces. With its imaginative use of materials, eye-catching designs and clever feats of engineering, the results are striking and inviting constructions.

The Miami- and London-based interior designer Natalia Miyar (opens in new tab) says she has always gravitated towards the outdoors. For this terrace in Ibiza, Natalia wanted to furnish it with colors that reflected the electric shades of blue seen in the sea and sky. I advocate for taking a playful approach to outdoor spaces: comfort and good design should be prioritized to result in an inviting and relaxed spot.

The best outdoor furniture, such as backyard sofas create social spaces within the garden but they work best when they are protected from wind and weather. When planning hard landscaping, consider integrating some seating into the terrace or raised beds; the result will cocoon the seating, while planting some sweet-smelling flowers or herbs on the higher level will create an atmospheric aroma.

Garden designer Claire Merriman (opens in new tab) scaled this idea up for this country house which features a huge crescent-shaped bench large enough to sit 10 or more into the expansive terrace. Claire planted Koelreuteria paniculata trees, which suit the south-facing aspect and provide shade over the seating area when its needed.

Lighting and texture in the backyard or outdoor living room are worth due consideration, says garden and landscape architect John Wyer.

We never put dining areas in full sun, for example, as its just too hot to eat. West-facing spots are ideal as they benefit from the evening sun and stay warm after it has set.

Depending on where you are based east or west coast you may find yourself only using your outdoor living room for part of the year, so you'll want to ensure that it can still be enjoyed when looking out from the inside. To do so, choose plants that offer lots of structure and year-round seasonal interest, he adds.

Also try to plan a lighting scheme that works well at dusk as this will be one of the best times to take advantage of the space. To do this, add a wash of light with a selection of spiked LEDs to the surrounding planting to show off colors, says Sally Storey, creative director of John Cullen Lighting (opens in new tab). These can be repositioned as the planting grows, she explains.

There's something truly magical about dining alfresco immersed in nature. If you love entertaining outdoors then consider adding garden screening and privacy to your outdoor living room to create a secluded outdoor dining space. Invest in plenty of comfortable, weather-proof outdoor seating to ensure that you and your guests feel welcome and warm.

The Advantages of LED Corn Light Bulbs for the Home or Business – Digital Journal - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PRESS RELEASE

    Published May 8, 2023

LED corn light bulbs are one of the latest innovations in lighting technology. They offer several advantages over traditional incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, making them an excellent choice for both residential and commercial lighting applications. In this article, we will explore the advantages of LED corn light bulbs in detail and explain why they are the preferred lighting solution for your home or business.

What Are LED Corn Light Bulbs?

LED corn light bulbs are a type of LED bulb that resembles the shape of a corn cob. They are designed to provide high-quality illumination in a wide range of applications, including street lighting, parking lots, warehouses, and other commercial and industrial settings. The unique design of LED corn light bulbs allows them to produce high levels of light output while using less energy than traditional bulbs.

The Tribune Tower Begins Its Second Chapter as a Luxury Residence – Metropolis Magazine - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Chicago Tribune Tower is the fruit of an epic international architecture competition held in 1922 that attracted design luminaries such as Walter Gropius, Eliel Saarinen, and Adolf Loos. But Raymond Hood and John Mead Howellss neo-Gothic skyscraper scheme, with its iconic flying buttress crown, won the day. It was completed in 1925 and has been a proud addition to the Chicago skyline ever since.

Today the Chicago Tribune newspaper is but a ghost of its former self, relegated to nondescript space elsewhere in the Windy City. But its namesake tower is as beautiful and prominent as evernow fully converted to 162 residences ranging in size from 1,100 to 4,400 square feet and priced from $900,000 to $7 million.

The Tribune Tower is a designated Chicago Landmark, meaning all alterations had to be approved by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. To attract affluent residents, developers added approximately 55,000 square feet of amenity space, according to Steve Hubbard, associate principal in the Chicago office of Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB), the architecture firm that handled the conversion.

Floors 2, 3, 7, and 25 were substantially altered into a series of practical and social spaces, Hubbard says. Level 2 is a fitness center; level 3 is a series of social spacesincluding a bar and a link to an outdoor garden; level 7 has an indoor pool; and finally, level 25 is a spectacular porch in the sky on which occupants can socialize under the buildings signature flying buttresses.

    More from Metropolis

Hubbard points out that only the main tower of the Tribune complex was landmarkedin theory the 1920s printing plant, 1930s radio building, and 1950s television complex, all parts of the Tribune media empire, could have been razed. But the decision was made to keep the entire character of the building, he says. Even the original Chicago Tribune logo has been renovated and preserved on the buildings facade.

Similar care was brought to interior spaces: The interior design honors the history of the building, says Ryan Schommer, director of Gettys Interiors, a Chicago design firm. Nowhere is this clearer than in the two lobbies. The original off North Michigan Avenue remains largely as it was during the buildings Tribune years, while another, more private entrance is located to the north along Illinois Street.

The historic and private lobbies are connected, he explains. Gettys Group is known for hospitality design, so we took a luxury approach akin to a great hotel. The private lobby features, for example, a Holly Hunt leather sofa and Christopher Guy chairs, alongside a working fireplace.

Upstairs, 55 different layouts were conceived for the towers 162 units. Details like crown moldings and baseboards were custom designs, while bathrooms feature specially ordered fixtures from Waterworks and kitchens were designed in collaboration with The Galley. We spent a lot of time studying neo-Gothic architecture. Everything is custom and curvilinear, right down to the ornaments on the door handles, says Schommer.

The conversion was a joint venture between two real estate development companies: CIM Group and Golub & Company. Planning started in 2016 and the conversion/renovation was completed in mid-2022. Hubbard feels fortunate to have been involved with such a historic property: This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an architect, he says.

US: States can boost sustainable indoor agriculture with energy … – hortidaily.com - May 15, 2023 by Mr HomeBuilder

With a rising share of U.S. crops grown in greenhouses and indoor farms, policymakers can encourage energy and water efficiency efforts in those facilities to support sustainable agriculture, according to new research. Two reports from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and the Resource Innovation Institute (RII) recommend policy measures to encourage efficiency, cut costs, and reduce climate pollution while accommodating growth in the controlled environment agriculture sector.

It is the early days of controlled environment agriculture, and with substantial growth ahead in the sector, we see a foundational opportunity to advance efficient and sustainable farming, said Jennifer Amann, senior fellow in ACEEEs buildings program and a co-author of the reports. Policymakers can work with producers to craft energy and water efficiency incentives that can lower production costs and consumer prices while reducing pollution from the agriculture industry.

CEA facilities often have unique energy needs, but few jurisdictions have CEA-specific utility rates. According to the CEA efficiency brief, utilities and regulators could design CEA rate structuresparticularly for greenhousesthat consider factors like the frequency with which a facility operates at peak demand. Allowing CEA facilities to qualify for lower rates during times of lower demand could improve energy affordability by encouraging CEA operators to shift electricity consumption to periods of lower demand or to institute efficiency measures to reduce electricity use during peaks in demand.

Controlled environment agriculture enhances food security and nutrition. Growing facilities can be located in urban areas and other places not suitable for traditional agriculture, eliminating food deserts and creating economic development opportunities in communities while protecting against supply chain disruptions, said Derek Smith, executive director of the Resource Innovation Institute and a co-author of the briefs. It is critical to establish energy and water efficiency policies to support controlled environment agriculture, which will require deep engagement between the sector and policymakers.

Many water efficiency measures for CEA, such as water recirculation technologies, have high capital costs. Allowing CEA facilities to be eligible for state water quality financing programs and enacting federal or state investment tax credits to offset the capital costs of CEA water efficiency technologies could help CEA operators reduce water use.

The energy needs of CEA facilities differ significantly from most commercial buildings because of factors like electric loads from lighting used for plant growth, dehumidification requirements, and unique HVAC needs. The research found that some energy codes address the unique needs of the CEA sector, with initial steps focused on cannabis growing facilities but more recently expanding to cover other CEA facilities as well. With crops like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and flowers increasingly grown in CEA facilities, building energy codes should consider energy needs that may vary across a wide range of crops. As the sector grows, adding CEA-specific provisions to model energy codes that are adopted by states and localities could provide clarity and avoid a patchwork of provisions across the country.

The codes and standards brief also recommends more engagement between the CEA sector, other building code stakeholders, and policymakers to help advance building codes that accommodate the unique needs of the CEA sector.

CEA facilities often lack resources to collect benchmarking data on energy and water use, which they need to be able to implement energy and water efficiency measures. The efficiency policy brief recommends that policymakers identify additional resources to enable stakeholders to better understand how to improve efficiency in CEA operations.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a grant to ACEEE and RII to explore how to improve energy and water efficiency in the CEA sector. To inform the two reports, ACEEE and RII convened a series of workshops with CEA growers as well as state energy and agriculture officials to identify CEA resource challenges and to formulate policy solutions.
