The upfront installation cost of retrofitting workplaces with LED bulbs is the main stumbling block holding back business owners from implementing the change. Although 81.9 per cent of those surveyed* currently use or plan to use LED bulbs, high price is the main reason 50.9 per cent of business owners delay implementation.

The new Leapfrog Lighting poll asked a randomized sample of 200 business owners and managers, "What is the main reason you delayed implementation of LED light bulbs in your workplace?"

"Upfront costs" emerged as a significant obstacle to implementation. Only 5.5 per cent doubted manufacturers claims of long life, and another 6.1 per cent doubted energy savings claims. Another 19.6 per cent doubted the overall value proposition, while 18 per cent were fully convinced.

"Upfront costs tend to be the main issue we run across with clients," said Stephen Naor, CEO of Leapfrog Lighting, who commissioned the poll of random business owners and managers. "That's not a surprise. It's good to see that 81.9 per cent currently use or plan to use LED. As an industry, though, we should try to educate users on the overall value proposition. We've done a good job on educating users on the energy and long life benefits."

Since 81.9 per cent of those surveyed currently use or plan to use LED in their workplaces, the survey results suggest that upfront cost remains a temporary objection rather than a permanent obstacle. The 19.6 per cent who indicated they were "not convinced of value" may eventually be convinced with case studies or other value demonstrations. It appears that the majority of business owners are convinced of the claims of long bulb life and energy savings, a combined total of 11.6 per cent.

Interestingly, older cohorts were more likely to be convinced of the benefits of LED lighting; 38.9 per cent of respondents 65 years or older stated they were "convinced", none (0 per cent) did not believe in the "energy savings claims" or "claims of long life" and only 27.4 per cent found upfront costs too high. Those aged 5564 years also trended higher than average for "convinced," and lower than average on "upfront costs" as an obstacle, at 45 per cent.

The age groups 3544 and 1824 years were most likely to pick "upfront costs too high" at 62.9 per cent. Both age groups were also less likely to choose "convinced."

However, higher income cohorts in the study were more likely to choose "upfront costs too high" while lower income cohorts were the least likely. Among $150,000-and-up income earners, 73.3 per cent found "upfront costs too high," compared with only 44.5 per cent of $25,000$49,999 income earners.

There was some deviation by lifestyle as well, with rural businesses less concerned with upfront costs, urban businesses just under average, but suburban respondents coming it at 58.1 per cent.

An average household dedicates about 5% of its energy budget to lighting. Switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. Timers and motion sensors save you even more money by reducing the amount of time lights are on but not being used.

You have many choices in energy-efficient lighting. The most popular light bulbs available are halogen incandescents, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although they can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, during their lifetime they save you money, because they use less energy.

Halogen incandescent light bulbs are simply energy-efficient incandescent bulbs and can last up to three times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs. Halogen incandescents come in a wide range of shapes and colors and can be used with dimmers.

CFL Bulbs. ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs use about 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescents.

CFL bulbs last about 10 times longer and use about one-fourth the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs. A typical CFL can pay for itself in energy savings in less than 9 months and continue to save you money each month.

You can buy CFLs that offer the same brightness and colors as traditional incandescent bulbs. Some CFLs are encased in a cover to further diffuse the light and provide a similar shape to traditional incandescent bulbs.

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and require special handling if they are broken. CFLs should be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers recycle CFLs for free. Visit epa.gov/cfl for cleanup and safe disposal steps.

LEDs: A New Kind of Light. LED bulbs offer similar light quality to traditional incandescents, last 25 times as long, and use even less energy than CFLs. Choose ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs for the highest quality and energy savings.

A lavish Caribbean beach compound was recognized by the Illuminating Engineering Society with a Philadelphia Certificate of Merit & National Award of Merit at a June awards ceremony at the Ben Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia.

Surpassing green building standards without sacrificing aesthetics, the lighting for the 40,000sf island retreat is nearly all LED and specified in marine-grade stainless. Several of the seventy different fixture types were custom-designed because the site is on a cliff and vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes. Lighting was designed for four, multi-story buildings, including two pools, indoor and outdoor kitchens, game room with bar and large roof deck, screening room, bedroom pavilion, guest and staff quarters, several garages, boat dock and a 100ft catamaran.

The Union League of Philadelphia was the site of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphias 2014 Preservation Achievement Awards, where the Rittenhouse Square Centennial Restoration project was honored with a Grand Jury Award. Commissioned for the 100th anniversary of Paul Crets redesign of Rittenhouse Square, 521 Atelier specified new linear spread LED post lighting to illuminate areas of the balustrade that are particularly susceptible to graffiti, the guardhouse will become a beacon after dark, and the gardeners cottage will be surrounded by a green screen fence that is brightly lit at night. Soon to be installed is new sustainable lighting for the ceramic fountain and pool inspired by the Villa Borghese in Rome.

Working with the Friends of Rittenhouse Square, Materials Conservation, Knapp Masonry, Bolender Architects and other professionals to preserve and restore Philadelphias favorite park was an honor and a privilege, said Librett.

Bryn Mawr design firm honored for lighting projects

An abandoned Sony factory in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, has been transformed into what could very well be the farm of the future.

Shigeharu Shimamura, a plant physiologist and CEO of Mirai, has constructed the world's largest indoor farm25,000 square feet of futuristic garden beds nurtured by 17,500 LED lights in a bacteria-free, pesticide-free environment. The result? About 10,000 heads of fresh lettuce harvested each day.

The unique "plant factory" is so efficient that it cuts food waste from the 30 to 40 percent typically seen for lettuce grown outdoors to less than 3 percent for their coreless lettuce. (Related: "Stop Wasting Food in the West and Feed the World.")

National Geographic spoke with Shimamura recently about the innovative food factory and indoor farms as a potential solution to the global food crisis.

What was the inspiration for this business venture?

Japan has had an interest in research and development in the field of farming in a factory setting for about 40 to 50 years now.

Our company built a plant factory at a location devastated by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 because of the general concern in Japan about the declining rate of domestic vegetable supply, and how we might remedy the problem of the heavy dependence on imports.

The reason we chose this particular location is because we wanted to prove that vegetables can be produced anywhere now. Second, we wanted to help restart the economic development in this disaster area. And last, looking into the future, if we could succeed there, we could also see a possibility of exporting the technology we developed all over the world. What impact could your plant factory have on the future of food production and as a remedy for food shortages?

Currently we have a world population of 7 to 7.2 billion. Among them, about 800 to 900 million people are suffering from starvation, or close to it. People around the world are all wondering how we can produce more food to mitigate this grave situation.

WHEN we attend a theater performance today, usually in the evening, the show is commonly set in an indoor stage illuminated by artificial light.

When we attend an outdoor musical concert together with hundreds of audience, even if we are meters away from the stage, we still enjoy the amplified sound and its variants.

Stage lighting makes the other elements of theatrical production visible. But it does much more, because it plays a major role in creating mood and atmosphere, in emphasizing and subordinating visual elements, and in blending the entire stage picture.

Similarly, sound design is recognized nowadays as the fourth design discipline, along with scenery, lighting and costume. This recognition owes to the development of digitized sound that, in conjunction with computers, permits designers to create and manipulate sound waves, not merely record or amplify them.

In the provinces, tight budget and expensive lights and sounds equipment has spurred the invention of alternative ways to illuminate and amplify a stage performance.

But with the prices for equipment becoming less expensive, with some entrepreneurs renting out performance equipment like lights and sound, the young breed of performing artists and technicians must now learn how to handle these tools of technology.

On the other hand, in mounting a theater production or managing an event, two teams interplay: the artistic and the production.

The artistic team creates while the other team supports this creating. This is where Stage and Production Management comes in. The first is directly involved in rehearsals, and the second provides the resources for the rehearsals.

In response to this need, the Outreach and Exchange Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will conduct Capability Building Workshops in Bacolod City on July 25 to 27.

The project is in partnership with the Negros Museum and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. There are three simultaneous workshops that will be offered, namely Lighting Design, Sound Design and the Production Management.
