Lead Duluth Airport Terminal Interior Designer Puts Northland into Her Work - January 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    January 11, 2013 Updated Jan 11, 2013 at 6:30 PM CST

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Interior Designer and Duluth East High School graduate Elizabeth Samsa has been actively pursuing, shaping and molding her passion for design for as long as she can remember.

"Inspiration for me comes from everywhere. It can be someone just passing by on the street, it could be a building. Really, I just gravitate toward any kind of energy," said Samsa as she flipped through the blueprints of the new Terminal.

Her 10 years of interior designrelated jobs have not only landed her a position with the architecture firm TKDA, but her imprint on the Northland is already well established in projects like the Zeitgeist Arts Caf.

"That was one of my favorite projects to date, so I love it," said Samsa.

When it came to designing the new terminal, Samsa had a balancing act on her hands: utilize warm, natural colors that offset the region's cold climate, while accenting and embracing what makes the Northland, well, the Northland. That included an undulating, reflective ceiling that shares the same qualities with one great lake.

In fact, the attention to north woods detail goes down to the very last reed on every trash receptacle.

"...those natural wood colors, we have a dark blue... muted green palates, so very natural earth tones," said Samsa, pointing out the color scheme on the concourse carpet.

Samsa says familiar Northland patterns on the concourse glass wall provide people with a sense of comfort and security.

"It has this birchlike tree pattern, and it's dimensional, and it provides interest and... security. So, we're... bridging form and function together," said Samsa.

Anne D. Bendann, interior designer - January 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Anne D. Bendann, a retired interior designer and community volunteer who was active in women's issues and church affairs, died Jan. 4 from pancreatic cancer at her Homeland residence. She was 65.

The former Anne Duffy, the daughter of an investment banker and a homemaker, was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

After graduating in 1965 from the Beaumont School in Cleveland, she earned a degree from Marymount College in Arlington, Va., where she studied art and design.

Ms. Bendann, who worked for more than three decades as an interior designer, began her career at Darr-Luck Associates in Washington's Georgetown neighborhood.

She later worked in Baltimore for Michael Asner & Associates and Innerspace, and from 1983 until retiring in 1997, she was with Swann Hall Associates.

"Anne was just tremendously talented and had a way with color and patterns," said Michael R. Hall, a principal in Swann Hall Associates. "It just came naturally to her, and she could generate many good ideas. She had a great personality and was a joy to be around. I've missed her every day since she retired."

"After she retired from her professional career, Anne found time to dedicate her energies to her community and her own personal growth. The past 13 years were transforming on both fronts," said her husband of 38 years, Lance Bendann, who owns Bendann Art Galleries in Lutherville.

Ms. Bendann was a strong advocate for women's issues.

"She wasn't a big committee person or fundraiser; she preferred hands-on work, getting down and involved quite literally on the street level," her husband said.

Ms. Bendann volunteered at the Safe House of Hope in Southwest Baltimore, where she supported women "who were caught in various cycles of poverty, addiction and prostitution," her husband said.

Interior Designer Inspired by Shen Yun - January 9, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

ATLANTAThe costumes and the sets are very inspiring to me and very happy, joyful, and uplifting, said interior designer Claire Bell of the sold-out Shen Yun Performing Arts opening show in Atlanta, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, on Jan. 5.

The mission of Shen Yun, a New York-based Chinese dance and music company, is to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, bringing it to life on stage through vivid costumes, Chinese dance, stunning backdrops, and music.

I love to see the happy colors and the color blocking and the costumes, Ms. Bell said. I feel like I want to go home and use some of the happy pinks, yellows, greens, in some of my work.

Shen Yuns costume artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, ranging from those of emperors, ministers, and generals to the everyday clothing of the common people, says Shen Yuns website. They use bright colors to tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season.

From a design standpoint, Ms. Bell said the colors of the production were wonderful. And almost the spirituality of it, it comes through for me.

An animated digital backdrop accompanies each dance, projecting lush landscapes and heavenly palaces while allowing the dancers to move seamlessly from stage to screen.

I love the interaction of the graphics with the actual performers, Ms. Bell said. It is really neat. Like a virtual reality almost aspect to it, which is wonderful.

Ms. Bell also appreciated being able to see Shen Yun and learn about Chinas history and culture.

The opportunity to see that cultural heritage of China and the fact that it is being done hereit cant be done in China, and I think thats really ironic and touching and wonderful, and wonderful that people are so interested in it, Ms. Bell said.

Shen Yun ‘Extraordinary,’ Says Interior Designer - January 9, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Interior designer Annie Laplante enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts at Montreals Place des Arts Jan. 5, 2013. (Courtesy of NTD Television)

MONTREALIt was a full house for Shen Yun Performing Arts Saturday afternoon performance at Montreals Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, the largest theatre hall in Place des Arts with some 2,990 seats.

Annie Laplante, a general contractor and interior designer, was completely swept away by the show.

    Everything is extraordinary, she said.

Ms. Laplante works for her fathers construction company, Les Constructions D.L.A. Inc., which has been building condominiums in Montreal for over 35 years. As a professional designer, she was intrigued by the dynamic backdrops that are one of the unique features of each Shen Yun dance.

The story, coordination with the screen, spectacular effectsits really good, she said.

Not only did she like the technical aspects, including the dancing and the costumes, but the purity inherent in the show reminded Mrs. Laplante of long-lost childhood innocence.

It brings back childhood, the innocence that we have lost over the years, with the work and everything, she said.

    Everything is magical.

Shen Yuns mission is to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, says the companys website. Performers dance in synch to music from a live Shen Yun orchestra that combines classical Western instruments and traditional Chinese instruments.
